I get my old filter just cracked, then i slide a quart ziploc baggie over it before fully unscrewing it by hand. You'll collect every drip. Did this for my '14 ex-l, & now for my '19 Elite.

Since then it's rolled to the transmission fluid change, an oil change, servicing my wife's 2016 Fit, and giving me the confidence to work on my old 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee! Thank you for your confidence inspiring well explained postings! You are awesome!

I just bought a 14 Ody and haven't changed the oil on it yet but on my old 09 Ody, I would put a piece of aluminum foil over the bar under the filter so the oil would not get onto the bar. Just made cleanup so much easier and I did not have to worry about drips on my garage floor later.

That oil life percentage is just a guide reminding you when to change the oil. If yours at 70%, just drive it till it gets down to 15%, the maintenance minder light (yellow wrench) will come on reminding you to do the oil change. Then reset the maintenance minder at that point. You can even drive till oil life goes to 0% before changing.

Great video, although the filter should be "hand tight" not "finger tight" and never installed with a tool. You run a greater risk rupturing or pinching the rubber gasket when a tool is used and the filter is over tightened. Majority of torque specifications for oil filters are 25 nm +/- 5 (18.5 ft. lbs.) The recommended engine oil for that engine is not a full synthetic but a synthetic blend. Honda offers their own branded oil for about $7 a quart. Also, to answer your question about filling the oil filter gilong81, large oil filters (mostly for diesel engines) should be filled with oil before installing. One last suggestion, after starting the engine allow the oil to settle in the pan for about 30 seconds, wipe the dip stick once, than check the oil level.

I have an '05 and a '14 Odyssey. Both manuals indicate a full synthetic oil is usable or any premium oil as long as it meets API. I like the full synthetic stuff myself. The synthetic blends are apparently the most profitable for the oil makers as it only has to be 10% synthetic to be a "blend." I read somewhere awhile back that most are only 18% synthetic. I've been using Mobil 1, Royal Purple, and Amsoil in all of my cars for about a decade. Only use Amsoil in the transmissions. The local dealer said they were surprised my '05 has never had a tranny issue and it has 272,000 miles on it.

I have to agree with Mark Rzepecki - all the info needed with no unnecessary talking. I also have a question, though - I have read that one should ONLY used the oil filter that a Honda parts dept supplies, and not an after-market unit. Is this true? It seems like a pretty easy thing for a mfr to get right.

First off, thanks for your comment. Glad you enjoy the video. My preference is to stick with the OEM filter. Especially they retail for like $6-$8 which is not much more than your other brands. But I have nothing against the other brands as I have used things from Fram to K&N filter. I thinks those filters are fine, but you should really becareful of fake or no name brand filters you may find on Ebay or elsewhere online. Make sure you change your filter with the scheduled service and any brand name filters will be fine.

I would be tempted to place a funnel type "catcher" below the oil filter (even though limited space below filter) to catch the used oil leaking out of the filter when you loosen it. Less used oil mess drips onto the Honda undercarriage with a funnel catcher? (Maybe cut a milk jug to act as used oil funnel catcher?)

I don't have the part number but both were purchased from Walmart. The plier style wrench is only for removing as it will clamp on and damage the filter, but I don't care as it's being taken out. The ramps are rated for specific weight. A Honda Odyssey has curb weight of 4600 lbs. Front/Back weight distribution is about 55/45, so front end is 2530 lbs. Therefore between front left and right side, the weight is divided in half to be 1265 lbs for each front corner. So your ramp need to support at least 1265 lbs.

I have a 2014 Odyssey and the light said 15% so I put in 2 liters of oil and I reset my maintenance reminder back to 100%. However, the dip stick looks overfilled. I'm confused because this car takes 4.5 liters to get from 0 to 100% and right now my oil reminder should be less than 100%...how can it be more accurate?

+Jesus Diaz Jr. It's not that there is only 15% oil left. From the time you put the new oil in at the time change until you got to 15%, the volume has not changed. There are bits of metal shavings and dirt from engine wear and tear. What you need is 100% clean oil. Sounds like you overfilled.

+Jesus Diaz Jr. look at the owner manual. I might cause problem if you overfill oil

The percent figure refers to oil "quality" vs. "quantity". You use the dipstick to check oil quantity. You should not operate the vehicle with overfilled crankcase; this can potentially break the engine. Next time, when the indicator shows 15%, simply perform a routine filter and oil change. Then reset.

You should NEVER tighten an oil filter with a ratchet like that! Oil filters should only be hand tight, meaning as tight as you can get it with your hand.

You can use whatever you want to tighten a filter AS LONG as you tighten it 1/2 to 3/4 turn after the gasket makes contact. This same instruction is printed many oEM filters. The problem with telling someone that you should only hand tighten until it's tight, is everyone has a different idea of 'tight'. Your rule applies to people that has worked on cars for awhile and have done it many times.

Always fill the filter with fresh oil to avoid starting the engine dry for the 3 seconds it took to build oil pressure. That alone will take miles away from the life of the engine. Always, always, always fill it up when possible.

That is simply not true. After an oil change, there is plenty of residual oil on surfaces for lubrication for the short time until oil pressure builds up again.

You overtightened that oil filter by a LOT !!! Hand tighten only, unless you’re a 6 year old with little strength. Misguidance will cost ya. You’re welcome !!!!!

First you only pointed out Honda oil filter without saying which part number, then you didn't do the oil reset. The two likely reasons everyone came here. Who needed you to film screwing an oil pan nut and oil filter. SMDH. Thanks though. Guess you did something and got some views. Sorry if I sound salty, I just value my time. Now I have to go watch another video or google this when I trusted you.

You should never use a filter wrench to tighten a new oil filter. Hand tighten only. I learned nothing new from you. For guys like YOU.....that's why us nice guys have to use a screw driver to get it off.
