Thanks you saved me a lot of money and time. I’d recommend also changing out the fluid at the same time. This car sat for a week and the fluid still had tiny air bubbles in it. O-ring and new fluid made it run like new.

Thank you for making this video. It cost me almost a thousand dollars to fixed my wife’s car, and its still making noise. After watching this video, I tried it with my other car. Only cost me $1.00 for the o-ring, and $5.00 for a 10mm wrench, and the noise when away. Had a hard time taking apart and put back it together, but I did it. Thanks Kial.

Hey Kyle, thanks tons for your video! My wife hadn’t driven her 2010 Accord for the 3 weeks I’d been out of town. The morning after I returned she pointed out that same power steering whining your DIY Video explained. A quick trip to the Honda parts counter, 10 minutes under the hood and $3.19 later and the whining was gone! Please keep your videos coming, Your The Best! I’m subscribing now.

I’m a recent purchaser of a 2010 Ridgeline. When temperatures dropped the power steering whine began so I found myself on KZfaq searching for a solution. Although it may not be everyone’s answer to stop that whine it just so happened to be mine. I got the o-ring directly from Honda for 90¢, replaced it the following cold morning and just like that, no more whine. Thank you so much for posting this video.

It is CRUCIAL to use Honda-specific power steering fluid in Honda cars. The pumps are designed to only work with fluid of a lower viscosity than other manufacturers; “universal” power steering fluid is thicker and will not let the pump pull as much fluid as it needs, causing this awful noise. Good video.

Great video and I subscribed. Scotty Kilmer site sent me the link to your video. I have 05 CRV. I'm old and my hands shake so a week ago I had a mechanic change the O rings and after watching your video I decided to try this and discovered that the mechanic had used a larger ring pushed up into the housing and not over the intake line. I changed it with a fairly tight fitting O ring and drove just a little and noticed a difference. With mechanic tomorrow, we will flush the line and put in new Honda fluid along with 10% of total capacity with Lucas PS stop leak. Hope that works. Thanks.

Thank you so much for this info! I was certain I would need a new pump until I saw this and thought it was worth a shot. I bought an o-ring kit from Amazon for less than $10, a known reputable brand of course. In my case I just could not get anything on that bolt to loosen it. I hate to be that guy that blames his tools but if my 10mm wrench was a little shorter I think it would have worked out. Instead I had to basically remove the whole pump to get to the bolt, so it turned into a bit of a bigger job than this shows, but I still got it done. I replaced both o-rings just because, and whaddya know it immediately made a big difference. After a few days of driving the real reward came. My van is quieter than it has been in a long time. The whine must have been there less noticeably long before it became obvious enough to hear distinctly. In my case the steering had actually started to get very heavy at parking lot speed which is also why I was sure I would need a pump, but it is good as new now. Thanks again for this tip, saved me some cash and kept a perfectly good part out of the scrapyard.

Thanks for the help. I was prepared to do the pump but changing O-rings fixed the noise. In better light I noticed the PS fluid reservoir had overflowed (when it was fine before) so an air leak was definitely the culprit. Good thing I watched this video because the pump I was going to get wouldn't have included the inlet tube and gasket, so I'd have had to re-use the (junk) old one and had the same problem. I didn't buy or have a multi-ring variety pack, so I bought a Dorman 926-157 kit (available locally) which has the two correct O-rings. It's literally a 5-minute job if you don't drop anything like a flashlight or the bolt down into the engine bay.

I use a method to bleed out the air in this fashion. Raise the front wheels and manually turn wheels left and right several times with the engine OFF. Another successful method is to use a hand held vacuum pump and to pull the air from the system thru the fill tube on the pump.

TL;DR: Thanks for saving me $450! My '02 Accord has been plagued with power steering problems since I bought it second hand in 2015. First, I had to replace the rack and pinion. That fixed the buzzing noise for about a year. Then, it got cold again and the pump started complaining about it. Every morning feels like I'm waking up the whole neighborhood with my power steering buzz. I've been going to my Honda guy for 20 years and I trust him. He's taken care of a lot of things for me for not bad prices. However, with this specific problem, he told me that it was a hose leak that was going to take $450 to repair. I bought the O-rings for $15 at my local auto parts store and spent the morning replacing both the top and bottom rings. The top ring seemed fine, but the bottom ring was dry rotted and brittle. It splintered apart when I squeezed it. Unfortunately, the pump to reservoir hose was dry rotted as well and got damaged in the replacement. I had to go back to the store to get a new hose, about $12, and I have been laughing my ass off all the way back home. It suddenly turned into a much, much quieter drive! Definitely worth taking a Sunday to fix this chronic problem. Solved it with about $30, some time, and some elbow grease. Much thanks for the video!

Love the video and plan to do this very soon as now I understand why the change in the weather temperature is causing the noise to surface again... In the cold, things shrink. However, I have what might be a dumb question, and I say this because this is the second video where I see the same thing. Is there any particular reason why you don't remove the hose from the fitting first making the removal of the fitting easier? At least that's what I would gravitate to if I had not watched two videos of people removing the fitting with the hose attached. I just figured I would ask before I go about it. Thank you

There was no unusual sound comming from the pump but the engine would struggle upon a cold start and shake and now since there is no power steering the engine cold starts perfectly and is running smoth . Also, there are no leaks and the fluid is reading full on the power steering reservoir. Question: what is the problem and what needs replacement. Bad Power Steering Pump ? Clogged rack and pinion ? Bad Pressure Switch ? Clogged line ? Any help would be appreciated 👍
