Honda Rebel Review. Is this cooler than a Harley-Davidson Iron 883? An A2 licence cruiser motorbike

We review a really nice black Honda Rebel motorcycle.
This bike can be ridden on an A2 licence in the UK and EU (of course other countries don't have our stupid licensing laws).
We look at the engine, performance, acceleration and brakes, handling, suspension, size (will it be too big or small for you?), styling, wheels and tyres, equipment seats and more!
After watching this video you will be able to make an informed buying decision.
We assess this bike from the point of view of two generations, young and older (ish).
What are its good points and bad points?
Price and specs too!

By far the best review of this bike on KZfaq! Phenomenal info. Thanks & Keep up the great work guys! I test rode a bunch of bikes until I swung my leg over Honda’s Rebel 500. This bike is smooth like butter! Such a refined machine. I’m 5’10 &175lbs and feel quite comfortable on this bike. I do have highway pegs for longer rides though.

Nice job as always 👍 A few months ago i've read somewhere that Honda is about to create a new "high tech cruiser". Similar style like this tiny rebel, but of course much bigger and equipped with a motor that is based on the 1100 cc africa twin (maybe this report was bollocks, maybe it was fact. Dont know). And i ve got a suggestion for an additional subject area you can make videos about: I think it would be interesting for some people, if you would explain some terms that refer to the geometry of a bike: Rake, trail, how it works if you ve got a bigger or shorter trail, flat or steep angle, small or big wheel etc. How and why to adjust suspension / preload etc. Could be explained by using a flipchart and some sketches

@@MrDarcy-OlMan I understand its a new 850cc engine for a "baby" Africa Twin and a replacement for the NC750. But an 850 Rebel cruiser would be a killer in the market especially with Harley pulling the Sportster from the EU in 2021 due to not meeting EU5. We can only hope for a Revolution Max Sportster in the future or the Bronx that Harley has shelved for now.

I am a UK expat living in Thailand. I ordered a Honda Rebel 500 in Thailand (200,000 bt with discount = £5,000 on the road) for my Thai secretary as her first "Big Bike". It is about the only "Big Bike" she can ride at 5'1". We tried the Kawasaki Vulcan as that seat is low but because the engine sticks out more you lose the benefit of the seat height. She also didn't like the forward foot pedals of the Vulcan. I am currently stuck in the UK and cannot see me getting back to Thailand until March 2021 due to this Corona Virus BS restricting travel so have postponed collection of the Honda Rebel until then.

I have to admire the flexibility of that 471cc parallel twin, which of course can be found on the CBR500R, CB500F and CB500X in different states of tune and does a fantastic job on all those models.

I was tempted to buy one of these but decided against it for several reasons, and it turns out some people are actually moaning about this bike for several reasons. 1/ the side that sticks out, it turns out that it becomes really uncomfortable after a while of riding, according to one rider who actually owns this bike. 2/ No main stand. 3/ No tacho 4/ They key would be better places on top rather than on the side as one of the things that used to happen with bikes with side ignitions were that the keys would vibrate out, mostly due to people putting too many keys on the ring. 5/ They should have produced one with a bit more power same size engine but putting out a little bit more for those who are not on a learner license. And 6/ the Kawasaki Vulcan S looks better and has the option to be a learner bike or not a learner bike. But still has no main stand. The main advantage with the Rebel is the fuel economy, Vulcan is not as good on that, but no odd sticking out bits on the side of the engine. Apparently a super comfortable bike, it may be my next bike, it depends what comes out that is electric instead. But the Rebel looks good, shame about the flaws. 7/ Oh yea and the tanks way too small.
@MrDarcy-OlMan
@MrDarcy-OlMan 3 жыл бұрын
We didn’t have issue with the sidestand. I hate centre stands. It’s a sweet engine and has enough oomph. Agreed about the tachometer. Maybe have a testride before you dismiss it because we liked it. 👍🏼👍🏼

@@MrDarcy-OlMan The issue with the side stand is to do with maintenance mostly and convenience. When you get a puncture or need to adjust the chain or need to swap out shocks or fork seals need changing without a main stand it becomes a real pain, punctures are common no main stand you have to roll the bike and look at the same time not so easy with main stand you just roll the wheel, try pushing a bike with a flat tire it's not much fun.

I bought this bike 2 weeks ago as my first bike, after having my license since 1982 and did not ride since then. What can I say? I like the Rebel and the "issues" you mentioned are no issues at all. At least not for me. Ad 1): if you put your foot on the pegs, as it is supposed to be, there is no problem. Of course, if you put your heels on the pegs, it is another story, but you should not do that anyways. Ad 2) I do not miss a side stand. Whenever I need it lifted for maintenance, I just put it on an assembly stand. Ad 3) ok, a tacho would be nice, but my ears tell me when to change gears. Ad 4) that is a perfect place for the key. It makes it something special and there is no problem with vibrating it out. Ad5) I think it is on purpose, because so it is a great bike for the A2 license holders, like my son will be next year. Ad 6) It is personal preference, which one you prefere. I prefere the Rebel over the Vulcan. Ad 7) Could be bigger, but I think it is big enough. It is not an adventure bike for long tours. You should test ride it, if you have the opportunity. It is realy great to ride. And now, I do not get anything from Honda ;-)

Another two interesting cruiser motorcycle with punchy motors and low weight are Kawasaki Vulcan 650(parallel twin from Z650) and the very cheep but interesting proposition is a hyosung GV650 with looks limiar to HD vrod and a engine derived from Suzuki SV650 so a 90 degrees Vtwin! Love the father and son testing a bike,I am 5 ‘10” and I loved testing this bike and I bought it. The main reason is I am 59 and have a dodgy knee so wanted a lighter bike that I could flat foot both sides. I am past wanting a rocket. I think you are both a bit tall for this and the ol man is a big lump. No disrespect but I think as well as a great learner bike and an ideal bike for shorter riders it’s still a great looking bike for anyone that fits. When I tested it I pulled up to a shop window to see if I looked to big on it but it looked great no thanks to me 😆

The ol'man mentioned being a bit big for the bike at 6'3", but we didn't get much commentary from Mr Darcy about how comfortable he felt riding it at his height of 6'1". I'm 6', and I'm looking at either the Rebel 500 or a Kawasaki Vulcan S and a recurring theme I'm finding with the Rebel is that it seems to be made for shorter riders. Naturally I'll test ride both before I buy, but I'd like your thoughts on ride comfort as someone closer to my height. It'll be some time before I make a purchase hence why I'm asking.
@thtigmif
@thtigmif 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not even close to your height (I'm 5'8) but what I can tell you is that with longer rides your legs will start to feel a little cramped due to mid controls. The Vulcan S has forward controls and last time I checked when you buy it they adapt the ergonomics to your body type (I think it's called ergofit or something).

I'm 6ft and I have a Vulcan S and I've ridden my friends Rebel a few times. I like the Rebel but the Vulcan S is far more comfortable. I kind of prefer smaller bikes in general compared to large sized cruisers or something like the Africa Twin, so for me the Vulcan fits great. An upgraded seat and I can imagine it would be very comfortable once you dial in the ergo fit for you.

Can't wait to see the 1100 version next year. You said chain driven is desirable these days, why is that? What do chains have over belts besides more maintenance? Genuine question. You made this bike look and sound cooler than other reviews I've seen. I'd love to see a vid on alternatives to the Sportster since they will soon be unavailable yet they remain the king with seemingly little honestly comparable competition. This rebel as an 1100 would be a decent alternative IF a louder exhaust can be found but what else is there? The triumph bobber costs as much as Street Bob so it sort of shoots itself in the foot there
@MrDarcy-OlMan
@MrDarcy-OlMan 3 жыл бұрын
Yes a 110 would be great! As long as its much bigger! Darcy works at a Harley-Davidson dealership and lots of people seem to want chain drive, especially on customised bikes, but yes, belt is more efficient and doesn't stretch etc.

Seems like a decently fun bike but I just don't like the fully blacked out look most cruisers go for nowadays. I prefer either chrome or steel for the engine. Thank you very much for this review as well as many other excellent ones in the channel. I’ve been looking into getting a motorbike (midlife crisis!) and I have seen many 125cc reviews in your channel with the idea of gaining some experience in a low power machine first. As I am old enough to try to do a direct access test (see midlife crisis comment before) to an A2 license, would you advice to jumping directly to Honda Rebel and bypassing the ‘training’ period on a 125? Or should I pay my dues and follow the well stabilised learner path? Any helpful comments will be appreciated!
@MrDarcy-OlMan
@MrDarcy-OlMan 3 жыл бұрын
Good question! 125’s are not at all powerful and are OK but there would be times when you wish you had more oomph. The Rebel is very manageable, and initially, if you don’t milk the revs out of it, it’s mild mannered. If you keep it pinned, it goes pretty quickly but not so quickly that it would catch you by surprise.
@pepeperez91
@pepeperez91 3 жыл бұрын
MrDarcy & the Ol'Man Many thanks for the reply! Once the current apocalypse is over, I’ll get on with a CBT and if I feel confident enough might start with some A2 lessons. If it goes well, I will seriously consider skipping ahead to this bike. Love the styling and Honda badge (owned 3 Honda cars). Keep up the good work with the reviews! It is surprisingly nice seeing you both talk about bikes that I will never like or consider, but fun to know about them nevertheless.

I had not been on a bike since the late 80ies, figured I would start easy when getting back into it this year, and got the Rebel S 500 as a "learner". Incredibly easy to ride, took me no time at all to feel comfortable on it, and it is very forgiving if you mess up the gearshifts, and clutching, thanks to the slipper clutch. So an awesome learner bike, in my opinion. Once you do get confident though, you might wish it had a bit more oomph, but I can only imagine that would be even more true with a 125 starter bike. My plan was to just ride the Rebel for a few months, then trade it in for a "grown up" bike. But I am loving it so much, I might just keep it for a bit longer and take my time picking my next bike.

Lane splitting is more of an American term we call it filtering through traffic or just filtering always have. I think the American called it that because originally motorcycle were not allowed to filter through traffic Imagine that how mad is that, on a motorcycle having to sit in traffic that's pretty nuts right, but it's the same in some parts of Australia as well apparently and still in some parts of the USA. I'm 57, 6'1", and 175lbs and quite comfortable on mine. I will also add I've had more than my share of back injuries. The biggest complaint I hear from most people that ride the Rebel is the seat which they often replace but that's the same for many bikes. It is a very agile bike and a blast to ride whether you're in town or riding twisties the mountains. My best advice is go throw your leg over any bike you are seriously considering and see how they feel to you. If possible test ride them.

As a "mature" learner too, I'd agree and would recommend the Yamaha. Not because I have one, but I wish I had bought one. It's as much power as regs will allow on an L plate and you'll be happy enough with it for a year or two. I opted, short mindedly for a cheap Chinese retro style bike, it's so underpowered that it makes you vulnerable on national speed limit roads, as it just about manages 50 mph on a flat road, no headwind. On hills, forget it. The Yamaha will also hold its value when you get your licence and trade in or sell on privately.
