Today we're taking the 1997 Honda Magna 750 for a ride. How does this bike stack up against some of the other muscle bikes out there? And how does it compete with the Harley cruisers? I'll share my thoughts, impressions, and review of the bike in today's video.

I have owned my 96’ Magna CD since 2000. It’s an awesome bike. It does have a couple of shortcomings. First off the rear drum brake. I did the bigger back tire mod and the brake is not real effective. I recently changed the shoes and it’s better, but a disk would definitely be an improvement. I am sure going back to the stock tire would fix this but I like the look. Besides for only having a single front disk it works well. The second is the fuel capacity. Let’s face it, 4 cylinders, 4 carbs, 4 exhaust pipes. This is a hot rod. And I have the K&N, Cobra pipes and DD shim and jet kit. Another gallon of gas would be a bonus. It will out accelerate many cruisers, sportsters, Vtx’s both 1300 and 1800 , Fat Boys have been destroyed in a race by me. It is an awesome canyon carver and very dependable. I have heard that there’s not much you can do to customize the bike, no options for saddlebags etc and I call BS. I currently have viking bags on easy brackets but ran Mustang hard bags on ghost brackets until I moved them over to my Yamaha Raider. Back in the day, there was plenty of dress up options from Kuryakyn, Jardine, Cobra, V&H and a company called Cycle-istic who until the owner Dobie G passed away made quite a few aftermarket parts for Magnas as did Dave Dodge Racing. Realistically you are now talking about a bike that is for mine 26 making it a classic bike. Kinda like you fussing about not being able to get the newest parts for your 57 Chevy. My Raider has been hot rodded and in an all out drag race will probably take my Magna but now we’re talking about a 1900 vs a 750, both hot rodded, the 1900 better be able to hold its own. As far as handling the Magna will blow it away every time. And being that I’m in my mid 50’s, that 1900 is a beast so the Magna isn’t going anywhere. I used to ride with Southern Cruisers, Rolling Thunder and Patriot Guard but now find myself mostly commuting as many of my riding brothers are either hanging up the helmets or passing away. If you get the chance to pick up one of these to add to your stable, you won’t regret it. It’s not a twin so it won’t ride like one it will ride like what it is….aV-4 muscle bike fast light and nimble. And when you add a set ov V&H or Cobra pipes, K& N and the proper jets and carb shims to get rid of the stumble the sound coming from this bike is intoxicating.

The 1st thing I did when I bought my '94 was, drill out the baffles. I threw some Viking bags, drag bars and a Mustang seat on it. I've ridden in the mountains, toured, and daily ridden it. I love my Magna. Got it for $2k.

A buddy of mine had a 1st gen Magna (circa 1984), right after Honda dropped it's displacement down from a 750 to a 700 to avoid the tariff. There were several of us that had bikes living in the dorms on an Air Force base. We had this thing on the weekends when the grills would come out (and the beer), and guys would do burnouts in the parking lot. This guy was trying to do a burnout on his Magna, but he kept bogging it out and couldn't get the tire to break loose. He got frustrated, parked his bike, and was upset, claiming the bike was a dog. I got on the bike (with his permission of course) and did a burnout to the end of the parking, then did another coming back. I got off and said "nothin wrong with this bike." I told him to drop the hammer at about 8K and she does really nice smokies. He had no problem doing them after that....we did have to keep an eye out for the LEs though, they didn't take too kindly to this practice...at any rate, the Magna is hardly a Harley wannabe, it's V-4 separates it from any twin, and performance wise the Magna would smoke any Harley except the V-Rod...

Loved my '99! I spent 9 months on it touring around North America. It's a great long distance travelling bike when it is set up properly. I had the windshield a Mustang seat with backrest and forward controls and could do 12 hour days no problem! When I bought it my buddy bought a Harley, I had more power more performance and more chrome at half the price! And the kicker was self adjusting valves!!

Had v twin cruisers before my 97 magna, but the power wasn’t enough, wanted to get a fast bike with the comfort of a cruiser. The best choice I ever made. Good for cruising and amazing for cornering(for a cruiser). Once you get the hand of it and squeeze all the power, beats most 600cc sport bikes between stoplights...the look on their faces...precious. You don’t need to buy expensive pipes, just debaffle the stock ones and it becomes insanely loud. Love it, did a complete rebuild and full restoration, will never sell...only buying more bikes...

Just bought a 98 before the start of the year for 1k, rebuilt carbs and it already had cobra slashcuts on it. Riden a handful of hondas from shadow 750, 1100 ace, and valkyrie. For handling power and comfort it out performs all. Love it

Great review. You're absolutely right about cruiser design going backwards. It's crying out for a manufacturer to put a high performance engine in a cruiser-style frame with good cornering clearance AND KEEP IT LIGHT. Triumph has kind of edged towards it but not cracked it, and likewise Kawasaki with the Vulcan. Nearest Harley got was the V-Rod which was obviously fast but still quite heavy.

I currently have a 1995 Magna Deluxe. They are amazing bikes. Comfortable, great handling for a cruiser, and plenty fast. In reference to several points in the video: I consistently out run other cruisers, stock or not, 114s or 116s, no really big issue. However, it's very true that the power comes in after 7, before that it is quick, but after 7 thousand rpm it comes to life. Comfortable for city to city riding, however, the more standard riding position makes my left knee lock up after about 3 hours, and the seat is Comfortable for only about 150 miles before my butt goes numb. The gas tank is incredibly small, a little over 3 gallons. Again, not bad for city to city, but anything I've 100 miles and you'd better hit a gas station. Exhaust sounds like a weedeater stock, a set of nice cobras or custom exhaust from Vance and Hines and this bike wakes up. It's a honda so incredible reliability, however, if you need to change something the engineers didn't think too far ahead, say the air filter, it is under the gas tank, so the tank will have to come off, which means the seat will have to come off. Not a big deal though if you're semi mechanically inclined. Great bikes, but due to Hondas lack of advertising or support, the bikes died off with hardly any aftermarket support. All in all, great bikes for newer ish riders, maybe too quick for new riders, but light enough to have no issues if you respect the bike. Any questions that I didn't hit, let me know and I will gladly answer if I can. Great bike man

No major maintenance other then oil and filters and general maintenance. Don’t forget to replace the secondary air filter. My bike has been on the beach of Daytona and the Dragons tail. This generation of Magna was "decontented" by Honda to make it more price competitive as well as more profitable. Not only did Honda eliminate shaft drive but the Hydraulic clutch as well. It should also be noted that this V-4 engine is based on Honda's VFR750F Interceptor which had the gear driven cams. So to keep the price down, Honda "decontented" the complex gear cam drive system in favor of a simpler cam chain set-up. I also believe that the fenders are plastic rather then steel. As are the faux chrome valve covers. IMHO, the best Magnas Honda offered were the 1987 & 88 "Super"Magnas. But this generation of Magna provided a good 90% of what H-D was selling and also what Honda had in previous renditions.

You pretty much agree with me on this bike Jon, I have owned two and sold the last one in May, 2020. Harley sold a culture with beautiful but poor performing bikes and Honda did not market their bikes in the states, they made their money on quality automobiles. The Honda crowd begged Mother Honda to bring out a higher cc Magna line based on their V4 motors. Honda's answer was the dismal selling tupperware CTX 1300 which was also a very good performing bike that was not accepted due to its radical looks, which after 4 years they had to give away at 9000 dollars to liquidate inventory. Be interesting to see what their new Rebel 1100 coming out very soon will due. A buyer should be able to get a decent Magna for 2k.

I've had a 94 Magna for nearly a decade. Wonderful machine, particularly for the price they are in the used market. I have modified mine a fair bit, and have some sentimental attachment to it now...but I am considering selling it and I'll tell you why. This bike is really a cruiser for the city. If you're just riding around town, it's great. It's light and nimble but still more comfortable than a standard or sport bike. Looks good, and sounds great with a set of cobras. Just don't need to stop at the store for stuff, because there are no bags and because of the pipes it's hard to find any decent sized bags for the bike. Many people buy cruisers to take trips with, even just short ones. If that's you, this really isn't your bike. Can you get out on the highway on it? Sure...but it's going to be turning over 5000RPM at 75mph. The bikes are geared short, and don't have the torque to drive a higher gear. Changing the front sprocket to a 17t is the only thing you can do, and you're only dropping those highway rpms by a couple hundred(while significantly reducing torque off the line which makes the bike feel sluggish)...it still sounds like it's screaming, particularly if you have aftermarket exhaust on it. Turning that kind of RPM doesn't hurt the bike, but it sure as hell will wear you out listening to it. There's something about the pantomime of it, that sort of RPM just wears on you. There's that part of your brain yelling SHIFT, SHIFT DARN YOU...but there's no more gear to shift into. Additionally, once you hit highway speeds, these engines tend to have some buzziness that you can feel through the bars and particularly through the seat. It's not that low frequency harley shake thing either, it's a high frequency buzz that feels really bad in my opinion. I would absolutely NOT want to ride this bike on a long trip. I find myself not even wanting to ride it an hour away... Here's the thing too. Unlike the 80s and 90s, traffic moves fast these days even on non-highways. City and rural surface streets often have cars doing 50-70mph on them, so you end up with a similar sensation to the highway. Alternatively, if you insist on keeping it down around 40-50 where the engine feels less busy, you're just going to have traffic stacked up behind you. If all goes well, I'm picking up a 96ci Softail next week because I am tired of dealing with these limitations. There are no legitimate fixes, it's just the way the bike is engineered. I haven't decided for sure if the Magna will get sold, but it seems likely. I just don't know what I would do with it anymore. Back when I lived in a small college town it was a fun way to get around. Nowadays though I would rather have a big lazy twin to idle me down the road in a more relaxed fashion. A 96ci/6 speed softail is only turning 2700rpm at 75mph, and that just makes the whole experience far more calm and enjoyable.

In 94, Honda decided to go with a 5 speed tranny. My 87 has a 6 speed and does 75 at around 4000 rpm. It's not Harley low, but it doesn't bother me.

Not correction, just some extra info: RE: 01:46 NET ratings for the engine are 86HP@9k/52ft ibs@7500 (Factory spec(Full stock, new condition) dyno numbers in Gross HP vary from 76 to 82HP (depending on alt, as well as every dyno is a little different), which is a testament to how efficient that drive system is ... the factory spec sheet shows why this bike is so much fun, as the it's just a full pull to a peak 87HP @9k rpm! Torque is just an sweet, as it flattens out from 7k to 8k rpm @ just under 52 ft lbs, they rated it @ 7500 rpm with 52 ft lbs. wringing this bike out past 9k rpm does nothing for you, but taking it right to that edge where it drops it's a fucking rush. Never trust Wiki-pedia or random pages, look for the factory spec sheet where you can see the data in print, and graph from the original data. older bikes have misleading info all over the web. motorbikecatalog is one source where you can get real information. putting it on the dyno will result in different numbers for everyone, as these are specs just for the engine itself, NET HP, as when the engine is on a dyno, but worth mentioning. Rear wheel HP is always a little less due to parasitic loss to drive train, which is one reason they went from that really nice, maintenance free shaft drive to chain...sigh. edit- forgot to mention, you can get stock dyno charts from totalmotorcycle, and the charts show stock, and with jet kits.
