One of the best KZfaq videos ever was when the RevZilla guys took an aging Honda 90 and 125 from Anchorage, AK to the Arctic Ocean via the Dalton Highway. They made a good case for the small Hondas being better ADV bikes than a $20,000+ GS; something, as an Alaskan, I've known for a long time.😎

Yep, I saw that video when it came out. Great ride but I wouldn’t want to do the Dalton highway on one with all those trucks flying by. We’ve decided we’re getting one though.

For average and small folk (basically 175cm and lower) all Japanese bikes are of ideal height. Underbones, which is this bike classified as, are designed for max commuting comfort with thick, wide seat you can slide around. The only weakness of bikes like this is the wobbly spine (not very good at high speed) and tiny-ass fuel tank (you're expecting 4-4.5 liter on average, some hold less and even fewer of them holds more than 5 liter)

Another reason for the heel toe shifter is that in Asian countries where this bike is popular, flip flops are the footwear of choice. Easier on your toes when you shift down.

Let them Asians know that I saw a man in the hospital ER following a motorcycle wreck, an accident which removed the toenails from his sneaker-clad foot. He was there for pain relief.

Motorcycling in flipflops thats ballsy. Theyre either poor or dont give a damn or both. Its not a cheap 125 i guess i get the flipflops i do live in a desert it sucls to put shoes on to go down the road and back in a few minutes. I just think habing closed toed shoes or boots is what my msf course taught for a reason 😂

I do like that aspect in terms of a doomsday bike or something. Although i do still wish it was closer to the rebel 300 than it is the grom. Would be better in my area. I also am a real fan of traditional motorcycle hand clutch. But i also have to respect thenidea that stuff like this in msny countries is a common vehicle and they cant just teach everyone to use a clutch they make it semi automatic. So its cool it wont stall but the motorcycle enthusiast in me just gets this npc vibe with automatic motorcycles. But i also respect how if you dont drive it to 50k miles so the engine blows right away this thing can probably tool around to the grocery and mcdonalds and back for decades and itll cost so little. You buy it new worst case unless you wreak it even if its well well used you cam get lots of your money back resale value. The old trails hold their value. The engine size sucks but being able to go hit a trail wothout assassinating the wallet is also advantageous. This is good for semi-hooliganism. Not what a dirtbike can do but its a nice explorerer considering the fuel economy the luggage area stock. Kickstart is nice if your battery goes bunk. Whuch it lasts long enough it will amd itll be nice to just kick it going. Being able to essentially trear the thing totally apart and rebuild it in a space the size of a small storage unit.

I can attest for the longevity of this machine, (2022 with 18,000 miles). With only oil changes and multiple tires it just keeps going, through just about anything, with next to zero maintenance. It is a small bike! why do we want to compare it to the big bikes? You buy it for what it is. I can't understand why people want to change it so much? The heel shifter, I can see the need to alter that, I bent mine in out of the way of my heel for standing and can just slide my heel over to use it. I don't see the need to buy a new one and put in these "big bore kits" or crazy suspension upgrades. Just buy a bigger bike! Or buy this one and ride it for what it is "FUN".

The ct125 is my favorite mini moto from the honda line up. If I could accommodate more than one motorcycle, i'd have one in the proverbial stable.

It and the rebel 300 need to make a baby so we got a 300 6 speed with the regular traditional clutch. Because damn you pay over 4k towards 5k after dmv helmet jacket a year of insurance, and it cant go 60mph uphill on my way into town at rush hour. If it could that would be sick. It makes me cross shop this 125 with a klx 300 im like do i really want the novelty plus the luggage rack kickstart advamtage but i have low speed. the klx can do 60 up a hill with ease and its a better offroader. So its better on and offroad but the price is higher. A 125 i like that ive ridden a grom i like the motor its definetly enough for 45mph speed limit areas. Which takes me to every restaraunt in my town. It just struggles to get to the restaraunts the town over. I look at klx300 because i can make it to the town over easier and better offroading. If there was a trail 250 with an engine like the rebel 300 amd i think thats a lot more power in such a bike. I just wish the trail 125 competed woth the 250s 300s more than it does the grom. The fuel economy is insane at those 125 cc areas though.

Grew up as a kid with the Honda trail 90s as there were few dirt bikes available until the 70s and we were just thankful for a taco mini bike or an old Honda 90

I had one ordered and got tired off waiting for it. So I went out and picked up a used Yamaha XT250. Added led headlight bulb, replaced a bent clutch lever and added hand (lever) guards. Fresh Royal Purple oil, oil filter and a new air filter. Super low seat height, cruises all day at 100 kph effortlessly. I’ve even cruised 120 kph no problem. Love to see you test one. Beginners bike they say. Well I’ll be 67 this year and been riding (counting dirt) well over 50 years😂!

Good review of a fun bike. I've been enjoying mine for a few months now. Yes, they are scarce; most dealers have waiting lists. Having had a '22 Grom your comparison between the two is spot-on. The Trail 125 feels more secure and less 'twitchy' but is not as quick. Very versatile and well- made. The USA version has the opposite shift pattern. I may change the shift pedal to be more like a 'regular' motorcycle, losing the heel pad which you and others commented may be shifted unintentionally in certain riding conditions. If I had one suggestion, I'd like to see it offered with a five-speed transmission and clutch, a least as an option which should make it a little quicker. The 4-speed transmission does seem well-suited to the Super Cub, however. Neat mini moto for sure!

Imagine everything good about a honda rebel 300 but with everything bad gutted from it, then everything good about a trail 125 witu everything bad gutted, then you throw away the bad combine the good and yiu emd up with a bike that looks like a trail 125 but performs like a rebel 300 so itll go 60 with ease, 6 speed with a clutch, call it a 250 eventhough its the same 276cc engine that is in the rebel 300. Then, do the same thing with the grom. And the supercub. Imagine how fast the supercub would be if the rebel 300 powertrain was transplanted. Man 125cc i like it i just cant have only that. Look at that rebel 300 engine amd they did a rebel 300 500 and 1100. So to me the mini motos it would be interesting if they had 125 and 250. The rebel engine is just such an interesting powertrain in terms of affordability and compactness i just itnwoukd he so much better to me if it was in the trail body and not that ugly rebel. To me its just wrong how there isnt a dumb fast version of the grom. Theyre all so sloe imagine if a supercub was actually super and its up there pushing it past 80mph 😂

Very nice bike, I love the high exhaust, high fuel tank, and snorkel intake. Aftermarket is insane! If I was going to be more off road, I'd totally pick one up. Got instead an ADV160. Great for city use, and occasional gravel roads, loads of storage. In a few years hopefully I can pick up a second hand CT125. I love small displacements, use my ADV way more than my CB500x.

ADV as a concept is a great thing to consider buying. But I just wish they'd strip off all that electronic bs and make it simpler and cheaper.

Our CT is basically my around-town grocery getter, but on the weekends we pair it with our 4Runner as a retrieval bike. Leave the CT125 in the landing zone, Drive to the top of the mountain with all our hang gliders, fly down, ride the trail up, throw it on our hitch carrier, drive the 4runner down, It's been perfect. Narrow fire roads, gravel roads, and even a paved mountain highway it's been good.

So having more power and being a lot heavier w/ no dual trans, it's been urbanized! it used to be a light, svelte hi/lo off road trail goat. It's like comparing the newer eurovan to the older split window 12-1500cc VWs with reduction gearing.. they were lousy on the fwy but a beast on unimproved roads. There's a big difference between the two.

a great bike indeed...unfortunately we in EU have the same problem as your neigbours in the US, this thing is very hard to get over here, because honda, at least officially, only sells the normal C125 super cup over here, nice video mate, blue skys

Make the frame longer and taller, fit a 250cc engine plus proper gearbox/clutch and it would be all the bike I would ever need. (oh, and fit some panniers and a topbox obviously) 🤩👍

Yep, many riders have suped up Groms with the 286cc motors. That would make a near 100mph bike.

The heel-and-toe shifter is because in the woods many times you can't get your foot under the shifter or you don't want to take a chance of catching your foot on an obstacle. My family had 2 Trail 90s in the late 60s. They would go anywhere. Slowly. And fun.

I personally think it's more to do with the centrifugal clutch (as it's the same way on the Super Cub, which has the same heel toe shifting ) -- when the shifter IS the clutch, pulling up to shift and then releasing quickly feels kind of awkward compared to stepping down. It's faster to step down and release than pull up and release, IMO.

I had a Honda Trail 90 in the 70s. It had high range for highway and low range for off road riding. I also had a three-wheeled Honda ATC 90 of the same era. Not sporty at all, but extremely practical. The engines would give a lot of compression braking if you shifted down. I just saw one in New Orleans the other day, and want to go get one again. The roads are horrible here, so these or enduroes are common.

Great 👍 review, in Australia we had them here for many years ( in the Honda 90 ) not the cub , our postal service used them for as many years as I can remember ( we call them “ postie bikes “ , they now use some replacement Chinese thing . BUT they bring big money 💰, they are used once a year for a ride called the “ postie challenge “ it’s from the East coast to the West of Australia around 5000km or 3500 miles through deserts 🏜 and every other type of terrain. They have a cult following. Which brings me to the new 125 , it was in Australia the first 12 months ( then removed due to not having ABS ) But in 2023 they are back again and will sell like wild fire 🔥 again . Great 👍 review.

The gear shift is designed like that because people in the original target markets of the earliest Honda Super Cubs would often wear sandals, so a traditional shifter that requires you to pull up with your foot would hurt your toes. They've been doing it like that for almost 70 years.

Try 120 million Super Cub sales. They have been in constant production since 1958, and used Trail 90s (last made 40 years ago) sell for several times what they did when new. There's no gear indicator because you're supposed to find the right gear for the conditions. The lack of dual-range transmission is a weakness on the 125. It's a TRAIL bike, not a DIRT bike -- it's intended as transportation for people who would otherwise be hiking. If they turn out to be as hard to kill as the venerable Trail 90, the money spent will come back many times over.

Disagree about the 'shifter made for city commuting'. The thing I dislike most about the shifting setup is when you're approaching a red light and hold the shifter down into neutral. Then you slow down... but if the light changes, you're stuck in a totally wrong gear with no means to rev match since the shifter pedal is either in gear or in neutral. I never have that issue when I'm riding around the countryside - there aren't any randomly changing events (stop lights) that cause me to want to randomly be in a gear I wasn't anticipating. In the country I'm either going, shifting up, shifting down, or stopping. No 'you're gonna stop SURPRISE you need to go right now so the person behind you doesn't hit you'. My theory on the shifter is that it's supposed to be simpler to learn.

Similar 125 cc scooters brand new in Thailand from Honda or Yamaha cost well under $3000 CDN . And they seat 2 riders comfortably also excellent automatic transmission! 4 speed semi automatic costs less to produce. Those models would sell massively in North America. We know why they're not offered here.

Fun fact about automatic clutch is that if you have the 1st gear or whatever gear on when you start the engine, the bike dont going forward like manual clutch

My wife and I both have the cb500x so this bike wouldn’t suit as we do freeway and longer tours but this bike is very cool and I would probably be more confident on lose gravel on a tour of Tasmania. For town commute I would probably prefer a scooter. Thanks for the review.

Haven't been able to get one around here. I had the CT 90 back in the early 70's. High and low range but never had to use the low range. They have the CL 500 at the dealer here. I think that one is more my speed. Thanks.

not what it's always been, they cheaped out and got rid of the hi lo transmition. not a viable trail bike anymore, more like a local toy. older models could haul a big guy up crazy steep hills. and no the increase hp does not make up the difference. goes anywhere...... on flat, but it's a trail bike?

@ltcuaa I'm not a big guy. I've had no problem getting up hills in 1st gear. I don't know what constitutes a trail bike, but I've been down trails from Oregon to Michigan with no issues.

I would choose an XR150 and save $1,100 over this one. Be able to carry a passenger when needed and venture farther off road. If the Navi is priced at $1,807 this one should be at $2,499 Just too overpriced! Great review 🍻🍻

Yes, I’ve ridden the Navi too and I have to say that the quality of the Trail 125 is much higher. The XR is a great option as well and I’d love to get my hands on one later this summer.

Not having the option for pillion is lame on Honda. But aftermarket seat is getting widespread. Also, you're comparing mostly plastic Indian scooter navi with mostly metal cub. Even for underbones, the Cub is both heavier, more rugged, and more expensive (made in Japan). It is both about quality and prestige, as CT was quite overbuilt compared to other, similar bike.

I got lucky and snagged a yellow CT125. The person it was reserved for wanted the Pearl Green, not the Tumeric Yellow. I was surprised it was still on the floor a few days later when I got it, right as the dealership opened.

Yup. Talking to a dealer in North Idaho, the Trial 125 never hits the sales floor. No one ever sees them except their owners, because there's always a list of customer backorders. One comes in, and then it goes straight out without spending a single minute on the sales floor.

A friend of mine ordered hers, paid cash, and the dealer bribed her with a couple of free oil changes and tires so that she would let them put it on the floor for a Saturday once it arrived. They send out a mass email to let people know that they could come and actually SEE one. That was last summer, and I think that they still haven't gotten all of the orders filled that they took from people who watched her riding it that day.

I traded in a Honda S50 for a new Honda 90 trail in 1967. Rode that thing all over the West Coast of Washington state. Beach side to the Olympic mountains. It was fun, got great mileage and never used oil between changes.

Besides perhaps the lack of availability in Canada and the nostalgia factor (which I doubt would apply to your wife in this case) I find it very difficult to understand why (but I'm sure you'll enlighten me) someone would prefer this to a Honda XR150L, i.e. it's much more expensive, rides on 17" wheels vs 19/17s, has about half the suspension travel, much less fuel range, unfamiliar gear-shift and no clutch, as well as a 4-speed vs 5 with resultant gap between gear ratios. Lack of a pillion seat (in stock form) to name a few things that spring to mind?

Really lucky for you in Canada that you finally got the CT125 on your market.^^ Still since the release and some (more or less) trustworthy comments here and there (not so from Honda directly, even after many and many questions to Honda Motorcycles Europe...) we - over here in Europe/GER - still keep on waiting on 'hot rocks' and nobody who's interested in the CT125 can understand any of it...😐😑😶🥲

Mind the trail has the same engine as the other minimotos, but a different tune. It's actually making a bit less hp (like 8.5-9 if memory serves) but peak torque is lower in the rev range. It also has a lower final drive than the supercub. A few tweaks also dramatically improves offroad performance. Just changing to some 50/50 tires like SR241s/244s (theres some debate on whats best, I run 241s with a redrilled front fender) makes it a different bike in the dirt. I met a guy that went for a 13 tooth front sprocket, high mount fender, and full knobbies, that bike is a monster offroad.

The horsepower limit is to preserve the centrifugal clutch. Because they have to operate constantly, limiting power increase parts life. They're also hard-limited to 12-13 horsepower by manufacturing design. More than this and the clutch would have short life. (I can testify this because cub tuning is popular in Asia, including legal racing competition)

It's what it's always been, a motorized bicycle. It's got the skinny tires of a bicycle, the stance and handling of a bicycle, with a motor than can take you to maybe 45 or 50 mph top end. It's fun and small and gets great gas mileage. Just what it's always been.

Id say its more of a mini moto forsure. Tires are much bigger than bikes, and bigger then actual mopeds (honda hobbit for example). Everything about this is mini moto as they are way more beefy all around in all ways. Get on an actual moped compared to this and its drastically different.

not what it's always been, they cheaped out and got rid of the hi lo transmition. not a viable trail bike anymore, more like a local toy. older models could haul a big guy up crazy steep hills. and no the increase hp does not make up the difference

You are more right than you know. The Honda Cub was a motor that people would buy to hang on their bicycles. The Super Cub was intended to replace that. Soichiro Honda got some of the inspiration from the scooters that people were riding in Europe, and combined that with bicycle features that he liked, such as the larger wheels.

It's funny how you said most customers wouldn't take it down dirt trails...oh yes they will, this bike is international so a huge amount of people in Asia who would use these on farms and the like. And South East Asian farms aren't like western farms, they're often on the sides of mountains

I use dirt bikes for hunting off steep, rocky single track trails in ID. Saw a guy on one of these and was curious. Not sure I see the advantage since it weighs as much or more than a regular dirt bike that would have 5x the power. You can install an auto clutch on a dirt bike as well if you want.

It would be a toss up between this an the new XR. As cool as the Trail is, I'd probably opt for the XR, for range and price mostly.

I have a 1983 passport c70 that I use for running errands around town but I've strongly considered getting one of these instead. The 3 speed on the 70 is a little annoying and with my 200 pounds on it, it'll only do 42mph on flat ground with no wind. Add wind or a hill and it's really not all that safe to be on a 45mph road. So just for a little more versatility, the 125 would be nice. But the 70 is lighter and smaller and cheaper, not to mention the lovely character a 40 year old bike has. I know I'd regret getting rid of it but I just can't justify having both bikes and I've wanted the 125 since it came out, such a hard choice 😭

I had an '82 c70 when I bought my Trail125 last May. I thought for sure that I'd want to have both. But honestly, I sold my c70 this past January. The Trail125 is just that much peppier and modern feeling. I found myself hardly riding the c70 (and it was in very good shape I might add). I say go for the Trail.

Yes, the shift pattern is different in the US model. The Canadian version is as described in the video - according to the user manual (and the one I got a month ago) you shift down to go up a gear. Still looking for the clock on mine.

@@DifferentSpokesTV The CT 125 all shift the same pattern, opposite of a normal clutch operated transmission. Also using the toe shifter neutral is at the top, not in between 1st and second. Honda has used this shift pattern for what seems like forever with their centrifugal clutch transmissions. Including to this day their manual shift (centrifugal clutch) 4-wheelers.

The different shift pattern is world-wide similar to what is in Canada. It makes a lot of sense when moving on trails - only in the US is it different. It is a rotary transmission and while moving it will not go beyond 4th, but once stopped it goes back into neutral if advanced beyond 4th. The transmission on my original '60s Cub was a three-speed and it had the same shift pattern. So do true racing motorcycles - that's because it is easier to shift up by tapping down rather than lifting up.

I love the CT 125 Trail but the parts are made out of ABS plastic. So i ended up with a ST125 Dax instead.

Honestly, I think there is a market for a 175-200cc range. Just a more power would make it perfect for those of who line in small country towns that are about 10-20 miles outside of the bigger cities. It would be unsafe to drive through the country roads as they are all 55-65mph.

Great bike. Not being able to shift my riding position for comfort is the only deal killer. I wish that Honda North America imported the pillion seat version on the Cub as well as the Trail 125, with the smaller luggage rack, so that I could scoot back on road segments to stretch out. Not a deal killer, but something that I don't like, is the auto-clutch with no option for the Grom's manual 5-speed.

There's aftermarket support for nearly all of that actually. The stock seat sucks so a lot of people cover or change it anyway. You can get a long seat + small rack kit for like 300usd. There's even a kit coming out in the next couple months to convert the slave clutch to a manual one.

Auto-clutch is the main point of a Cub series. It's like saying you want CBR650R with a CVT. It is weird to say that lol. However, there are a lot of underbones, which is *this* class of bike, use full clutch manual, generally 150cc and around 16-18 horsepower in Asia. Most of them use the same engine and transmission as 150cc standard/sport. Suzuki Raider is the most popular, and it has the same powerplant as GSX-150R, but 30-40 kg lighter.

When the Super Cubs first arrived in the US, about 65 years ago, the name "Super Cub" was a trademark for a Piper airplane, so they were dubbed "Honda 50." When the legendary Herb Uhl created the world's first trail bikes, he became the top-selling Honda dealer in the country, so when Honda started copying his modifications, they called it the "Honda Trail" (they tried "Hunter," but it never caught on). The "T" in "CT" stands for "Trail." People here in North America will say "I have a Trail 125," because pretty much everyone will know what they are talking about -- then as they continue to talk, might call it the "CT125." They don't even have to say "Honda," everyone knows that anything called a "Trail" followed by engine cc will be a Honda.

Sure, the CT125 is cool, and is likely to be a real conversation starter...but with about 10% greater claimed fuel economy and double the fuel capacity, 50% more ground clearance and suspension travel, similar seat heights, a mere 23lbs heavier, and $1,200 Cdn. less expensive, the XR150L is hands down a better value and performer. Only real downside being the old school carburetor vs. the F.I. on the CT125. Long term, the CT125 is likely to hold it's value better...because of "coffee shop appeal". Personally, after forty years riding two wheels, I got into scooters last year...currently riding a pearl white 2018 PCX150 and absolutely loving it for around town and the occasional back road ride between cities. The combination of comfort, storage, nimble handling, fuel economy (120-135 Imp. mpg) and practicality are unmatched by anything that I've ever ridden. Hoping Honda Canada brings the PCX160 in within the next few years.
