As far as the weight difference is concerned. A pretty good chunk of that can be explained with the extras that are Included on the Suzuki that are not on the Honda. 1. Larger fuel capacity 2. Lower engine guard and Skid plate 3. Factory handguards 4. Quickshifter 5. Accessory mount above the dash 6. Bolt on subframe Also The Suzuki makes 57ftlbs of torque. (More than the Honda) and it makes its power lower in the rev range so its more useful. Add to that the much better Suspension on the Suzuki and I think the Suzuki wins this match up

better suspensions, better range, definitely Vstrom, not to mention a more interesting aesthetics to my taste...

Nothing defines the offroad behavior more than the suspension. The Transalp can be more powerful and light on paper, but that unadjustable pogostick suspension will bottom out and get you off the saddle earlier than you might think. The suspension is also the main reason why people prefer an 890 over T7. Next level suspension gives you the next level of experience. So V-Strom for me please.

I’d definitely go with the VStrom with its larger tank and the quick shift. If you preorder it with the lower seat Suzuki toss in a rack and top box . I wish Suzuki would offer the Orange available on the 250 version and cruise control as an option.

Both would be good bikes but the simple facts are for starters, that the Honda lacks the Suzuki's far superior fully adjustable and much longer travel suspension and better clearance. The extra weight of the V strom can be attributed to the better quality (heavier) suspension, standard bash plate, much stronger frame, quick shifter etc. The Suzuki's all new engine with it's twin balance shaft engine also adds to weight but undoubtedly it will be buttery smooth compared to the Honda. Add all the aforementioned Suzuki standard equipment to the Honda and it's weight would very similar to that of the Suzuki. Looks are subjective but IMHO the Honda without even a standard bashplate and fully exposed exhaust system looks cost cuttingly cheap and unfinished compared to the Suzuki. I have owned 4 Honda's and 3 Suzuki's and different other makes in my 45 years of riding so I cannot be accused of brand loyalty. Also, in my opinion, testing in the real world is needed rather than speculation on the paper performance figures before stating unequivocally one is quicker than the other. Even though I have a great deal of affection for Honda's I would at this time definitely take the Suzuki.

V-Strom without a second thought.

The Suzuki produces 78Nm (57.5) torque, which makes sense with it having the slightly bigger engine.

I'd go for the Honda for its weight advantage. If I needed additional fuel capacity, I could get a frame mounted jerrry can. I must admit, I do like the tribute styling of the Honda that pays homage to the original 1986 Transalp.

2023 is shaping up to be a monumental year for motorcycling. There are so many good bikes coming out, and the general spec of these bikes has become quite good with TFT displays, and electronics suites that used to only be on high spec bikes. Kawasaki brought back the small inline 4... Lots of good feelings about 2023.

Great presentation. I would go with the Honda Transalp, but will wait a couple years for them to add cruise control and truly test out this Unicam design. I do not mind a smaller fuel tank as I have a smaller tank as well:) and stop for breaks.

The Suzuki's quickshifter way better adjustable suspension, way better seat, low end torque gets my purchase. I'm also an original owner of the Honda 600 Transalp in the same red white and blue color scheme in 1989. Suspension and seat sucked then and looks like it still is.

Nice comparison. What struck me is that both the bikes have longer suspension travel than the supposedly more offroad oriented T700. Also when they unveiled them with no CC and tubed tires I instantly ordered Tuareg 660 :)

Great technical review. Unlike many others. Thanks a lot. I was sort of undecided and had started leaning towards the Vstrom due to it's 20liter tank, more plush ride, wider seat, longer suspension. But now decided for the Transalp with its high rev needed engine (making it more fun to ride like a KTM, I currently own a 390ADV), more preferred brand (for Turkey anyway), a service in my city, slightly higher power (95hp in Turkey), and nostalgic better looks (I'm born in 1968 so more into oldies), and more road biased (I plan to do max 5% offroading). A close 2nd would have been the Tracer 7, if it wasn't for the worthless ground clearance (since I love opening throttle when I see speed bumps, and like street hooliganism by jumping on/off pavements, etc.

Fist time viewer. Outstanding breakdown of both bikes. Fantastic and concise. I personally am in the market for a mid range ADV bike and feel Honda will miss a lot of sales here in the US since the Aprillia Tuareg and V Strom 800DE are available here and will take a big chunk out of that potential market. The Tuareg is getting the nod so far. With its performance and features like Cruiser Control it will be a winner on longer trips in this country with long stretches of highway between destinations. I am a Honda guy and daily a CRF300L Rally but need more power for those pavement miles.

Suzuki no doubt at all. With a tune that 800 will easily eclipse the 100hp mark. Piles of torque and the typical Suzuki bulletproof build reliability.

Reliability niggles aside, the biggest issue is KTM’s 890 platform. More power then both, and the Norden 901 comes in at 218 kg wet, lower centre of gravity, and more ground clearance. It’s why I’m buying one.

On a GS now but coming from many Suzuki's starting with the TL1000R in the late 90's up to a 2018 vstrom 1000xt, out of the Japenese big 4 I'd always go with Suzuki. Although secretly lately I've been wanting the new KLR as a second bike, and given the price it's a definite possibility next year.

Good stuff. 👍🏾I have to go V-Strom 800 DE here. I currently have a Kawasaki adventure tourer with non adjustable suspension and I don’t really want to go that route again. I also think the weight difference is being overhyped. The V-Strom mostly just carries more fuel from what I see. Once you start upgrading things on either the weight should be completely manageable so long as they aren’t top heavy. No review I have seen of either bike thus far has included complaints about how the weight has impacted handling or the ride experience so I wouldn’t spend too much time overthinking that as a factor. That leaves me with price. No way am I paying more for a bike with worse suspension and a smaller and cheaper looking TFT, etc. I am just not into it, so the Suzuki would be my choice in the end. I would take the money I saved and put it towards upgrading the exhaust, tires, protection. and windscreen, and then just enjoy it. I think the Taureg 660 is another similarly priced option worth considering too. I prefer Japanese bikes though, so I probably would go with the Suzuki over that as well. All are great options. Just be honest with yourself about what features matter most to you. All of them seem like they are blast out on the open road and trails. Now, if I can get my grubby little hands on one soon. 😂

I think the suspension differences would favor Suzuki if you were off road inclined. I'll be interested in seeing how long it takes Rocket Man to fall out of love with his Transalp when he gets it😄😄 If he still loves after a year then it's probably a winner. How does the ergonomics of the TransAlp compared to your Honda? If I could get a Honda CT125 I'd have that for off road and keep my Tiger 900 for everything else.

Great vid. And helpful in my future decision. However, I was not really considering the Suzuki anyway. It’s between the tenere and the transalp. I suspect the actual ride comparison, as well as the specifics will decide.

I have been waiting for this bike for awhile and tbh, everything you presented solidified my committment to this bike. It sounds like the perfect balance for intown, touring and some offroad. I'm chomping at the bit. But I am in Canada, so the likelihood of seeing it here this year is low. Regardless, I will be waiting.

Good video but all speculation. In reality depending on gearing and a million other factors a less powerful bike can be quicker and/or more satisfying to ride. On paper is just that.

From what I have seen the Suzuki has easier maintenance. Air filter , battery access. I’m fresh off the Africa Twin and I could care less about cruise control. I want to clean my air filter easily, not have to remove the fairing or gas tank to get to it.

Wait. The Torque is much higher on the V-Strom 800DE with 57lb-ft than the Transalp with 55lb-ft. I would choose the same as you did if I'm just looking for comfort and extra power alone, however, with a standard quickshifter, skid plate, and fully adjustable suspension front/rear, I would choose the V-Strom because this is the one that has more off-road capable not to mention, the V-Strom can carry three aluminum paniers at the same time without worries. I think, the bolted subframe has the better advantage to an ADV bikes which V-Strom has and the Transalp has only integrated frame because it's easy to replace it if mishap(I won't wish that to happen to all of us) that won't require to replace the entire mainframe.

Definitely the suzuki . Didn't hear you mention the suspension adjustment . FULLY adjustable on the suzuki and not on the honda a massive advantage if you want to go off road . And the travel on the suzuki is 220mm front and rear another off road advantage. Also the larger fuel tank .is another plus .

I would definitely pick Honda as well.

I have the Wee 650 IMO it is a great bike fun to ride but on Hiway with wind guts the bike handle not as well because the weight , it is lighter than Honda AT . Now with this Heavier Vstrom it will be the ideal to go . We don’t do a lot of jumping off road so this may be the answer . Til we have real test units, it's gonna be a hard decision, especially on power. As a CRF1100 owner, I can attest that the Honda power units can be fantastic, I'm slightly surprised the Suzuki fails to produce power figures as high as the honda, when and where is key so we'll see. I'm a suzuki man at heart but do enjoy riding my CRF1100 and 22' CB500X a great deal, but, I'm pulling for the Zuki. I like the extra wheel travel on the Suzuki and the removable subframe, 17" on the rear is fine, you'll be spending more time on the tarmac anyways on such a bike.

I would buy the updated re release 2023 KTM 790 Adventure. Better specs power, weight and maybe even price this time.

I sometimes cover 400-500 miles per day so, whichever has tubeless tires is my favorite. If neither, then I want neither. Both are expensive for what they are. Honda pretty much hiked the price of AT and inserted much cheaper to produce bike at old AT price. That is just evil. I'll keep riding what I have. (Xt250, cb500x, Super Ten, and Royal pain in the ars Classic 350.)

I think the weight on the bikes is wet weight also, the Suzuki has a bigger fuel tank so some of the weight is from fuel

I'd prefer ergonomics, performance, and ease of servicing+maintenance as standards.

I would like the vstrom if it weighed 40 or 50 pounds less. It weighs as much as a standard africa twin, which is superior in power and features, so it doesnt really make sense to buy the vstrom unless you simply cannot get approved for the higher cost on the africa twin.

The manufacturer should loan you each so you can rigorously test drive them and let us know what's good. I think I want the NC750X but I'm only seeing the dct version. I love shifting 😎

I would choose Suzuki.

For a daily rider you can't beat the V-Strom's 37 liter panniers. That's basically $2,000 worth of added value. No brainer for me. Suzuki wins.

Does anyone know how is the rear preload adjusted on the Honda? With that awful C wrench or like Suzuki with the knob? If you sometimes ride alone and sometimes with a pillion, it's one of the important things to have in mind. No one wants to fidle with that C wrenc in 2023.

I would not buy either one, I would buy the Suzuki V-Strom 650.. Longer wheel base, better fuel economy, more than adequate power. And not to mention a lot less money..

A good comparision video but pure specs. Until somenone rides both bikes is just paper stuff. On paper the Vstrom is a way better overall package, but until I ride both there si no sense to give a solid opinion.

Honestly, the only thing the XL750 has on the V-Strom is the curb weight imho. The enigine has been detuned (torque in low-to mid range), you have adjustable suspension F&R, bolt on subframe,... Suzuki was not messing around when they designed this. I find it to be very ironic that Honda has made a road orientated bike, with the weight of proper adventure bike. While Suzuki seems to be the more offroad capable bike, but with a significant weight penalty. Can't wait to try them both.

Bikes are pretty similar. At first I agreed with u that Honda would be the winner. But people who will do significant off road and distance will appreciate the extra suspension and range of the Suzuki. HP and stuff. Probably not a big enough difference to notice. Or not big enough difference to matter. When u think adventure u think a bit off road and something with good distance and suspension. Would think Kawasaki would be coming out with a bike like theses at some point. Put Cruse control on it and beat the other ones.

The cruise control question makes TONS of sense if you are Honda. Honda sells bikes but they make money hand over fist on that giant bus of a motorcycle called a Goldwing. Now, the transalp is a rubbish offroad bike but IF it could be made comfy and IF it could carry some luggage, which it will, it has the potential to overlap into some markets Honda really has no desire for it to. If I am walking into a Honda dealership looking for a travel bike like a gold wing and I see a 11k 12k out the door Transalp with 90HP and cruise control and I'm frugal and get the soft aftermarket panniers on the cheap...they just lost a 25-30k Goldwing sale. They have no desire for that to ever happen. Suzuki, having no foot hold in the touring market, is a bit more perplexing. But I always say never assume evil when incompetence is a potential. If I'm buying a Suzuki, I'm going straight to the DRZ-400 and giving the 7k for it and then throwing the 4k I saved from a VStrom into a bigbore kit and every aftermarket bell and whistle I want. Will it be a little less horsepower? sure, but it'll have a higher resale value for longer and more aftermarket than you can throw at it on a PROVEN platform instead of the V-strom with its new motor.

vstrom have 57.53 ft lbs 👌🏻still transalp have better torque to weight ratio but not as much as you show . for me vstrom be better choice but 22 kg more = draw .,biger weight can be advantage at end in long trip at straight highway with side winnd 👌🏻 but everywhere else literally is disadvantage 👌🏻 so yea if not this than vstrom cos have more torq and lower on rpm + dont have so high front fairing and tank in regard to seat etc 👌🏻 but those bikes are very close overal .

Excellent, well-researched video! I spoke to Honda Europe this week, and they told me we would not be getting price confirmation on the Transalp here in Europe before next month. I am expecting it to be around €10,500 for the grey and black variants, and around €10,800 for the white/red/blue model that I have on order. As for your conclusion: I agree! The V Strom, like many Suzukis, already looks about 6 years old, and Honda's better dealer network makes it a no-brainer for those, like me, who intend using the bike for long-distance touring. Keep up the good work. RM🙂

I'm super a super Honda fan!! But this time I feel a little disapointing! For me the new transalp looks too street bike and less true adventure bike!! It's kind to bike a bigger CB500x!! Anyway that's why I don't sale my old ktm 950 super enduro and my KTM 1290 super adv. 'R' 2018!! Hehehe!! Honda should build a XR 700 or 800 "R" for true adventures!!

The items quoted as positives for the Honda ergo seem to actually be disadvantage offroad.... e.g. sitting forward, etc. And you weren't able to address standing position. If you pick a bike because it's better on the road, what's the point of adventure bike. At this size and price, nod goes to Suzuki for better suspension and torque lower in the rev range, as others posted. Seems like most reviewers reaction to the Transalp is.... meh. It should have been much better. Honda seems to be putting out very bland bikes with big names e.g. Transalp, Hornet, etc.
