The Honda HA-420 HondaJet is a light business jet designed by Honda in the early 2000s. Manufactured at the Honda Aircraft plant near the Greensboro Airport, USA.
A special feature of the HondaJet is its unusual power plant layout, with two jet engines located on pylons above the wing.
Having made its first flight in 2003, the aircraft was officially presented only a few years later, and serial deliveries began in 2015. At the beginning of 2021, more than 170 aircraft were delivered.

Auto industry is highly competitive. The aerospace industry is very much old boys club. The fact that Honda's first jet is so much more interesting than its peers is telling.

First, the Hondajet is American made. Google it. Second, in aviation Honda is centuries behind Cessna. In a perfect world you would want to drive your Honda to the airport where your Cessna is….

@@carl8790 I agree with you. Gulfstream makes the most luxurious jets for people who have pilots and chauffeurs…… LOL I was talking abouy my self. I gave up on my plans to become a millionaire long ago. No private jets for me. All I want for Christmas is a Cessna 185, its my dream plane.

I sold the Telemetry Receiver/Combiner systems for their North Carolina facility and enjoyed my three visits there to train their Telemetry Engineers how to use the equipment. They were dedicated and friendly guys.

When Honda has successfully master the technology of plane design and manufacturing including the turbo fan engine, avionics, etc. USA will impose version 2 of the Plaza Accord to kill Honda. Go search Plaza Accord of 1980's, see how USA coerce Japan, car import quota, appreciation of Yen, ban on Toshiba Semiconductors....

I worked for 3 years in the manufacturing of the structural parts of this aircraft in Alabama, what a great experience it was and what an awesome piece of engineering this is.

Engines above the wings means the rare water ditching would be more survivable since the nacelles wouldn't act as sudden brakes when they would hit the water if they were under the wing.

I’m pretty sure they decided to do so mostly to reduce noise/vibration in the cabin. I remember reading about it a while back.

I remember seeing this land at my work in the UK when it was under test with a special permit to fly. They were obviously tying to gain EASA or UKCAA certification at the time. Neat little thing, looked smart and seemed to have great performance unlike the ageing business jets that we were operating.

I work for Subaru and we're making our own Huey variants as cheap export models with Bell. Subaru merged its Fuji Heavy Industries in 2017. We also make our aircraft in the US.

Subaru/Fuji is a great company. I had a Legacy GT from 2006, lasted over 200k miles. Also have a reliable Subaru powered generator to back up my house for power outages. I love Japanese engineering, design and culture. My wife and I were talking today about visiting one day. If we could only take a Honda Jet over there! #notinthebudget

One of the major advantages of placing the engines like this is they actually become more difficult to have a compressor stall .. with distances out and above the entire airframe this allows for clean air to enter and this allows other surfaces to function more efficiently

Also, attaching the jet pylons to the wings reduces the need for structural reinforcement, and thus the weight, of the fuselage to handle the stress the engines under power would place on the fuselage.

I was able to get inside one of these in a Detroit expo back in 2014, it is so awesome. I love how you can adjust the tint of the windows to limo levels of darkness.

I followed its creation and developement back in the early 2000's. Honda presented its mockup at the festivals of speed in St.petersburg florida in 2004 at albert witted airport during the boatshow. To see it in person was amazing. it was so off the radar for most people but i loved seeing its progress. Today my interest is in the Lilium Jet. which is the most revolutionary aircraft to come along since the Honda Jet. This is simply the best electric vtol aircraft going thru its paces of certification. its going to change the way we travel. Where high speed rail fail in most cities due to enourmous fee's, such an aircraft requires no infrastructure to build outside of a few very simple landing pads. which in many ways see themselves becoming a franchised business unto itself. The more places to land, the more business and passengers the more the industry grows.

Fun Fact: my alma mater, Mississippi State University in Starkville MS has an aviation research facility in town, that participated in the development of some of the Hondajet components back in the late 90's and early 2000's.

Thank you Sky for mentioning the VFW 614! I really like the HondaJet but if I ever hear again that this is the first plane to have this engine arrangement, I will snap someone's neck.... Your presentation is the most completed review of the plane. (Unfortunate that the new version just came out a bit too late to be included.) The HondaJet definitely is a reminder of "the power of dreams". Keep up your great work! Fast flights and soft landings! ;-)

They had a version of it in FlightGear and it was programmed very well. It flew very smoothly. ... had, programmed, flew... apparently until someone at Honda sent a Cease and Desist letter. Now, unless you've already downloaded years ago, it's just a memory. I'm hoping whoever in Honda sent that letter, they would reconsider. It really was nice.

Another advantage of having the engines on pylons is that it's just a _minor refit_ to replace them with Warp nacelles.

I think a different nose design in the future would be beneficial...something more rounded, yet of course advantageous as far as aerodynamics go. Side note: Sky, cannot thank you enough for including both metric and standard units! The added effort speaks volumes! SPASIBO!🛫

I agree, we are insulted in the US market by the jerks that think we want to switch to metric, metric is still decimal anyway, and it is a hell of a lot more logical to measure something tiny in thousandths then millimeters, the rest of the world is also horrified of fractions, lol..

Forgot to mention there are no thrust reversers on the engines, which is why its landing rollout is higher than expected at 3,000 feet.

@@RoyalMela - why are TRs "bad" for over-the-wing engines given they are basically still in the same spot had they been mounted on the empennage? BTW, you know, Tom Cruise flies this Honda as his personal jet? But he's not certified to fly it single pilot by himself. At least not yet.
