Great review! I picked up a Torpedo VB-101 in a trade not too long ago and have never been happier. I use it for recording, as well as live, with my 5150 iii. The tone is great once you dial in a good patch and it sounds massive running DI while also going through to a real cab. Keep the videos coming, they're both funny and informative.

this is pretty sick... liking the riffs Glenn!... I have to say, in my head for some reason I was hearing some blastbeats would be so sick in like the next section of the cali C demo...I don't know why but I was totally air-drumming and thinking, Blast beat time! and then the demo ended xD

I've been experimenting with the Wall of Sound plugin with a Weber loadbox and Engl 50 watt head and am amazed at the sound, blows away anything from a POD or stuff like Amplitube. Using a Les Paul with a pair of Iommi pickups and the Engl cabinet sim, the sound is so thick and oozy, perfect sound for some epic doom metal. The "Dust Devil" trick you do in a later video is totally cool, too, for building a big thick heavy guitar sound. Thinking of upgrading my rig to using the Torpedo Live so I'm not relying on a plugin for the DSP.

Another great thing about load boxes/attenuators is that you can plug a valve amp into them, squash down the volume a bit but crank the master and get more of that singing valvey goodness, especially from vintage amps!

This seems like a really nice product, simply because you can integrate your own gear into the signal chain rather than a DSP guitar processor. That being said, at $1000 a pop, it definitely has some stiff competition (Eleven Rack + Pro Tools Bundle @ $700), and even some of the higher-end modeling plug-ins like ReValver 4 and Positive Grid BIAS. It should be noted that users can buy the (inexpensive) Wall of Sound plug-in and run it independently of any Torpedo component. In today's modern recording age when everybody is doing everything to get a good guitar sound, I've personally utilized the WoS plug-in to spruce up some tracks recorded with a small amp, while blending that with the signal from the ADA GCS-3 cabinet emulator. That being said, I've learned that recording engineering is more about practice than theory. Miking a guitar cabinet through trial and error gives you the knowledge to know what the hell you're supposed to do when you actually do utilize modeling plug-ins/hardware.

Nice review, you covered a lot of what I needed to help assess this for my home studio. I kept thinking though "yeah but live you'd have to deal with the inept sound guy" since I am a keyboard player and totally know that pain. Then at 9:09 I completely crack up - yup, that is the truth. A few sound guys know their shit, most don't.

I was interested in the micing a cab from behind is that open or closed back or does it really matter and what mic would you use, I tried it once with a 57 in front and 57 in the rear on a open back boogie , it definitely made the sound huge. Also have you tried the mesa cab clone , it doesn't sound anywhere is good as the 2 note.

I have it, it's cool if you are into soundscapes. Possibly the looper is not easy to use, unless you buy the extra wireless pedalboard, and reverb quality is not top notch, but overall it's quite a nice piece of gear, very much fun to use

How about Torpedo Reload? It comes with WOS 3 and it packs with some mighty powerful features. Saw that Fluff has both Live and Reload. What strikes me that nobody mentioned awesome feature of Reload, that you can setup 8 and 16 ohm cab combined, independent of power amp load.

aaahhhh, I just love the intro/outro. Anyways, I'm thinking about switching completely to digital. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced about selling my tube amps and my 4x12 cabinets and getting something like a Kemper profiler :( . Please help me out here and share your opinion! Should I sell my stuff and get a Kemper or something similar? I think the helix, kemper or even the positive grid is close enough to a tube amp. Cheers from Mexico!

Has anyone compared this to the Rivera Rock Crusher Recording Attenuator/Loadbox? I want to record with my Engl Powerball II in my apartment and that amp is stupidly loud not to mention not having the proper room for micing the cab.
