I've had this lensball / glass ball / glass orb / crystal ball thing in my closet for YEARS. Have never used it for a photoshoot, and thought "now is the time". Review of the ball for photography, how practical it is, how to use it in normal/usual photoshoots, issues and concerns to watch out for, and I show you my images that I took around my house. What do you think??

Circular Polarizer. I'm just about to go give a few shots a try with my lensball but I CP should be your best friend when it comes to the glare and reflections. I'll put that to the test shortly.

Definitely a good tool to have in your bag...sadly, I don't have one. Let me know how it works for you and if it cuts the glare enough to get you a useable image!

@@BostonSchulz No worries. Waiting for another overly sunny day to try it. Inside using lights it does wonders though. I have it mostly for any car photography I do and water shots on sunny days to take the glare off the top of the water.

I just have the one lens ball, that came w/ square cube as a rest. they came packed in white protective styrofoam, which I use alot. Keeps from burning my hands, too. I often use dark towel as a shade for glare. I will be sending off for a suction type of mini tripod, which we give me better ways to position the ball. Patience is another needed "tool". I average 3 out of 10 I'm happy to show off.

I wish I had seen your video a week ago, I just got 3 lens balls in 3 different sizes. They are so heavy! I had no clue they would weigh so much. Thanks for your honesty.

I was surprised with how heavy they are too, but they are a large ball of glass! I find them too clunky to carry around. Happy you came across my video; thanks for watching!

Oh! That'd be interesting! I wonder how that'd turn out...I didn't try anything at even a relatively slow SS.

With the glare, one thing I've seen done, is using a shade to cover the ball. Because it's acting as a lens casting a shadow over doesn't effect the projected image. I have a couple on order for a contest I'm entering and that's my plan for it.
@BostonSchulz
@BostonSchulz 3 жыл бұрын
That makes a lot of sense!! I will definitely try to use a shade to cover the ball next time I try to shoot with the ball again. It just seems like a lot of work for an image of a ball if you have to bring a shade! Totally get it if you're using those pictures for a contest though... Really curious to see how your images turn out!!

@@BostonSchulz ya just for funsies it could be a major hassle if you don't have an existing shade to shoot from. Well as soon as the negs come back from the judging I'll be able to post them up on my insta. The contest is film February, it's a whole roll film contest.

HAHAH! I was thinking about cutting that part out. It's also super obvious because I was leaning back trying to get focus on that frame. But I guess, that's just my stance now. 😂📸

I wanted to shoot at f/2.8 so nothing around the ball was in focus. If I ever bring this guy back out though, I'll try it at f/6.3 though! Thanks for the tip!!

I have a glass lens ball and have used mine less than a handful of times, because as you said, though small, they are quite bulky and heavy. But mine came with a glass cube that my lens ball can sit on (concave in the center) and it has came in clutch. I have used mine to take some photos of a Starbucks downtown where I live, then I took it to the fair last fall and got some sick photos of a Tim Horton's truck serving coffee (yes I'm Canadian) and also of the Ferris Wheel after dark when it was all lit up. One of the two shots I took of that was kind of off focus but it looks more like a long exposure photo so it was a keeper along with the perfect shot I got. How I got them was I took the plate for my camera out of my Geekoto tripod and then tightened it with the cube that holds my lens ball in it's place and it held perfectly. I would love to share mine with you but they are just on my personal Facebook account...if you have a way I can send them you let me know.

Does a polarizer remove glare?
@BostonSchulz
@BostonSchulz 7 ай бұрын
It would reduce it, but my understanding is that all the images you see of these with no glare are edited. I don't have a polarizing filter at my disposal, but it's worth getting if you're getting one of these glass balls for photos.

Did you put a UV filter on your camera? did it help?
@BostonSchulz
@BostonSchulz 7 ай бұрын
A polarizing filter will help with glare, but I don't know to what extent, because I sadly don't have one to test with. My understanding is that it won't make it look perfect though!

I have canon eos rp newbie here, I tried taking pictures using my lens ball but everytime I press the shutter it won’t let me take pictures of it not but when I face my camera to a different angle and not take picture of the lens it will let me take pictures hard to focus too, please help me thank you 🥺

Hi Rostyn! I’m sorry to hear you’re having issues. Sadly, I don’t shoot with a Canon so I don’t know how much help I can offer. But it might just be struggling to find a focus point and not letting you take a picture due to that. I’d look into videos on focus settings for your camera and play around with those and see if changes one of those helps you!
