He explained in the music video shooting sketch that he made the song when he was lost and depressed and that the aggressiveness, distorted and autotuned parts represent the dark thoughts inside his head, so it’s like his real self and those negative thoughts are having a conversation that’s why it’s switching from natural voice to artificial and distorted voice. The chorus in which he sang “Set me free” repeatedly was more like him begging and pleading for those "thoughts" to go away because he wanted to overcome those feelings and the depressive phase in his life. He also said that he intended for the choreography to convey these emotions that's why it was so intense. Everything was done so artistically and epic. Some may not agree, but this song is a masterpiece. Production-wise, choreography, vocals, everything!

I feel this needs to be mentioned before the release of the song so people don't interpret their own meaning as it may impact how one likes the music or relates to the lyrics. Now the song absolutely makes sense in line with his personality.

Actually, he is talking to his negative self (the robotic voice/autotune). He tells this part of him to set him free because he said in the interview that only you can set yourself free, you are your own enemy but also the only one that can save you. All you need is the courage to overcome yourself. "Do you" is the message. All the details (the set, the tattoo, the dancers formation,...) are soooo deep and impressive, the creativity behind... he is such a genius and the performance of this feeling is beyond beautiful. Masterpiece.

Jimin's professionalism is evident in the chorus where he repeats the same phrase 8 times and it doesn't sound boring! On the contrary, there are so many different things going on behind the scenes! As every musician knows, the basic principle in music is "never repeat the same musical phrase in the same way"! Here we see exactly that! Music at a high level!

6:51 they are mimicking the butterfly here. An army on twitter come out with interesting theory, that the choreo is based on metamorphosis of a butterfly. Jimin is the caterpillar, the dancers are some element that will turned him into a cocoon. At the end jimin successful turned himself into a brand new jimin, the one with white outfit, a better, free jimin 🤭

I think the Dance Practice video is almost as dramatic as the mv. It focuses on the choreo so we get to see much more detail than we do in the mv and it makes the dancers equal partners with Jimin in the practice performance.

I think the 'set me free' has more to do with the burdens and pressure that Jimin felt during the last few years, where they had to made the desicion to put BTS on hold and each produce solo music. We all know Jimin is really hard on himself. I feel like in this song, he sets himself free from all that. Also, during the second verse, he doesn't have a shirt on, it's like he is taking the pressure of his shoulders and in the end, when he is dressed in all White, he put everything behind him and he is truly free. I also feel the use of the more robotic sound and his clean voice is representing his inner and outer thoughts. The robotic voice representing his inner thoughts and struggle. I cant wait to see what he Will do with this song live.

I still have chills all over my body with this MV. The way he was looking at the camera with those siren eyes, the way he walk away, the way he said "yeah" and "set me freeeeee" felt like heaven, the concept, the color, the sound, the beat, everything in this MV smell BOP 🔥🔥🔥💜💜💜 I love him so much. here is a translation of the poem written on his chest. the lyricist is Rainer Maria Rilke. it fits so perfectly to the song and to Jimins personality. I live my life in ever-widening circles that stretch themselves out over all the things. I won't, perhaps, complete the last one, but I intend on trying. I circle around God, around the ancient tower, and I circle for thousands of years; and I don't know, yet: am I a falcon, a storm, or a mighty song.

70 year old Army here. Jimin is using a line from "ON - Kinetic Manifesto Film" and I think it was RM who said "Gotta go insane to stay sane." Jimin says "Going insane to stay sane". It really works in both songs. This song is really a strong statement from Jimin. He explains the meaning of it in another video. So happy for him and his solo success. The title song for his album that just dropped last night is really good too. In fact the album is all pretty darn good. Congrats to Jimin! I really love your reactions. Loved your reaction, I knew it would be an insightful one. This is a work of art, and like all excellent works of art, it evokes intense emotions and can many different interpretations as viewed through the eyes of different person. For me, I took it to be not just Jimin's statement on his freedom to create his own music, although I could see that being part of it, but it felt like he was talking about external and internal pressures, and how he's finally letting those go and setting himself free to live life fully as himself, for himself. The judgement scenes (at least I saw them as judgements) and the different voices he used could be his internal voices echoing over and over what others who judged him said as well the external critics judging him for not being exactly what they wanted him to be or just because they needed to let out some hate. But again, my interpretation is colored by my experiences, and as is the case with the best art, we'll never know exactly what each detail in the performance meant to the artist unless the artist tells us. The first two phrases are not auto tune: that’s him rap-singing in a very low register (similar to his growls/deep voice in past songs), probably with a bit of layering of his own voice. The auto tune doesn’t happen until “I never stop”. And “again, repeat” is his own voice (I think again is the word - you don’t have subtitles on). It’s conversational…the back and forth - 2 voices. He is setting himself free from the negative noise in his head that’s caused him so much self-doubt, low-self esteem etc. for years; but ALSO setting himself free from the haters who have relentlessly tried to pull him down for years. He’s telling them to F off because he’s on his way, doing what HE wants to do that’s true to himself. He’s a genius!💜👑🔥🐥

This song it's not about being free and separate from his group to do solo work but as he mentioned that: Jimin here is fighting against himself and he was talking to himself and telling himself hey fool get out of my way and let me ignore all my oppositions and haters, it the time to be himself and i am on my way to help myself as he was trapped inside himself and he is fighting his inner self, he suffered from depression in the past and difficulties at the beginning of his debut time and if you go and listen to Lie it has similar meaning and similar lifting choreography and also to get himself out of this Lie he was living in so now it's the time for him to set himself free by himself.

Further to all you said, two things that I would like to expose are 1. A spiral like a Golden spiral or Fibonacci spiral (more by Google) and 2. A poem of Rainer Maria Rilke written on his body ... it was his idea ... the poem fits to the song and to the whole concept of this masterpice ... Jimin has painted the Rilke poem “I live my life in growing circles” in broken letters on his chest. The poem, which among other things evokes a mystical image of God, was written in 1899. Rilke lived from 1875 to 1926. (by Google) This is not just a great performance, this has also educational value ❤

So far except Jungkook(left and right, dreamers) all suprised me....jhope more and Jimin set me free was totally unexpected in a good way....bts don't have a specific genre but still they never fail to suprise us with different genre of music with each release..... can't wait for Jungkook,V,Suga and Jin's album

Well it's pretty expected for those two tracks to not surprise you considering that they never had any hand in producing them. But yes, chapter 2 has been constant surprises! They're continuously raising the bar in more ways than one. I love how many genres they're touching upon... actually Set me free ... I have no idea what genre this would be under lol. And to think that Suga has been working on his singing so his next album will probably sound completely different to his other stuff, V might finally dabble in Jazz. JK I personally hope will just do what we want him to do with classic pop/RNB and lastly with Jin I'd be totally happy if we just get a whole album of 'the astronaut'. Either way.... they're totally showing their collective range through the individual albums and i'm glad we're here for it!
