I think ice water is always slower temp check than hot water. It'd be interesting to see the same dual test with a fresh cup of piping hot nuked water. Then see which thermometer has to sprint to get the reading the fastest. It'd be obvious you wouldn't want to do it with too narrow of a vessel of water. Both probes would need to be about as equidistant to the edge of nearest wall so that their probed area isn't cooling down faster than the other.

I've bought others for as little as $15. I leave them all over the house and garage like a card of reading glasses. (seniors will understand) They get me close enough. That said, I have a couple Thermapens too. My question for the pitmasters out there is, should you pull a steak to measure the internal temp or do it on the grill? My concern is going too deep with the probe and measuring the heat from the grill.
