You know I do totally agree that voice actors deserve more recognition though when talking about this show I think we should give an extra special shot out to a certain demographic within the voice actor community that most of the cast here fall into; the english dub anime voice over. Like most of the stars of this series like Laura Bailey, Liam o Brien... hell pretty much everyone but Ashley Johnson or Marisha Ray of the main cast either had their first major roles or still have major role in various english dubs of anime over the year. Which quite frankly even compared to voice over artists in cartoons are over looked here in the U.S Either by people just loyal to the sub or because the names are a lot more niche and usually don't attract as large an audience despite all of their massive talent so quite honestly the fact that so many are here and have created this incredible project is a real testament to how well their ability to craft stories with these characters have gathered an audience and how their skills behind the camera earned enoguh acclaim to start crafting their own narratives one can watch in such a form. And quite honestly for as much flak as we give streaming platforms the fact that they exisit is mostly a good thing because yeah this would not have found an audience the proper way it was meant to be presented if not for a streaming platform. Like even Adult Swim I feel even if it got on Toonami wouldn't be able to allow this to be the sort of series it needs to be the way you can just drop episodes and be able to just go all out with both the comedy and drama in such a way. Hope yeah we get a 6 season arc for this series with Amazon Prime and that the success of this first season means they announce a third before like the second season so there isn't a huge wait between seasons or anything. Oh and as others have pointed out so glad to see you have a full on honest review like this again. Guess it makes sense to do it of something you love but man been missing seeing these for shows and films you loved not really having time for them over the last few years and hope that's something that changes even though I get this being a sort of special occassion thing.

As a fantasy nerd, this show highly appealed to me; even though I haven't become familiar with CR until about 2016...or 2017. That being said, I was amazed by what the cew had achieved; selling out t-shirts in less than an hour, reaching their Kickstarter goal (and THEN SOME) in only 24 hours, all the charities they've helped. I've especially been fond of the crew's collective voice over work in both anime, movies and Western animation. Now, as a lover of D&D; this series also tickled my fancy in all the right ways (as did all the many campaigns created online.) Makes me think back to my high school years in the 2000's when I first became familiar with the game. Now that their highly anticipated Vox Machina series' first season came and went, I can safely say...I was thoroughly entertained. I loved the action, the animation, the story, the voices and most of all, I LOVED Scanlan's songs

Best review of this series I've seen. Excellent job. I've been a fan of CR for about two years now and began with Campaign 2. I've watched a few episodes of C1, but not many, but I too, am a huge fan of the members of CR. The amount of quality content they have created, and made available for free, is mind blowing. Just in sheer hours of story telling, they've far surpassed even Star Trek or Dr. Who. The story of this group of story tellers is fascinating all by itself. And it's been interesting to see how each of their three campaigns has been different, exploring different aspects of story telling. Thanks again for a well-crafted review.

I think you might be wrong with the exact reason they started playing D&D.They didn’t do it due to it being Liam’s birthday, they actually did it because they challenged themselves to do something new every episode and that episode’s challenge was to play a tabletop game (also according to Liam,Matt kept inviting him to play D&D). There’s a video on KZfaq that featured snippets of the All Work,No Play podcast (Sam and Liam’s podcast) episodes 2 and 3.In 2 they stated that they were gonna have a game of DND with Matt Mercer,Travis Willingham who’d most likely bring his wife Laura Bailey along,Talesin Jaffe who was (according to the two)a DND specialist and also a close friend of Matts with Orion Acaba (Neither Marisha nor Ashley was mentioned, but I’m sure in the sound clip I heard them). Liam did mention he actually play D&D 15 years prior, but a bastardised version of it.fun fact:this episode featured the creation of Scanlan and as mentioned in the video Sam wanted him to be the worst character (though I think he did bard because Liam said they were the worst I can’t exactly remember the podcast). In the podcast after, they said they loved it and wanted to try it again, they showed a sound clip of the game in action and in this clip you could hear the whole group shouting and having fun, they also praised Laura to no end.

For me, it works because that isn’t really the focus of it. The swearing is very natural and conversational, like how I would talk to my friends, and the story is still taken with gravity, along with the struggles of the main characters. It’s ok to be filthy as long as you have something to complement it, which LoVM achieves in my opinion. It’s all about balance and pacing ya feel me? Also Primal is the tits!!! Gendy’s best work, which is REALLY saying something.

Question If you could choose your own type of actors as the voice cast for the Chroma Conclave (the group of dragons seen at the finale,) who would it be and why? Personally, I would pick the following figures...in spite of the fact that I've yet to reach this particular point in the campaign. Raishan - Lena Heady, something about her description on the CR wiki page just makes me think "hey, this dragon should be voiced by the woman behind one of the most devious woman in fantasy media to date." Much like Raishan, Lena's Cersei Lannister was often seen as a docile and and delicate figure; unaware of the truly conniving soul she held within her. Who better to play such a characer like Raishan, am I right? Thordak - Mark Hamill; maybe it's the fact that this is a fire dragon, maybe it's because he was known for being a tyrant (according to the Wiki.) But to me, such traits just bring to mind Mark Hamill and his portrayal of Fire Lord Ozai. Can you just imagine hearing HIS voice coming out of a dragon's mouth...he'd probably make David Tennant's Brimscythe seem pretty wimpy by comparison. If not THIS character; then, he could probably be a good candidate for Vecna (the Whispered One.) Umbrasyl - Keith David or Keston; Nothing much is known about this dragon (personality-wise) but I can't help but think that the deliciously creepy vocals of either of these men would fit perfectly for one of the Conclave (if not this one.) Vorugal - Steve Blum; c'mon...we've all heard Steve's slithery and sly tones before in animation. How could you NOT want to hear it from the mouth of an ice dragon

Mentioning Guardians of the Galaxy: James Gunn, writer and director of Guardians of the Galaxy is a huge D&D nerd and actively played the game in a campaign with Joe Manganiello, Paul Wight (a.k.a The big Show) and others. I don't know if they still play given Gunn's probably ABSURD schedule now, but this was during his time as Guardians of the Galaxy director. Any D&D player will tell you that they watched Guardians of the Galaxy and said "Ayup, that's a D&D group."

8:16 Actually Mary Elizabeth was asked to come & play at the very first game. Alas she could not. However later on she joined the game in several episodes as the Tiefling Zara. She even came flying in on a Wyvern along with her boyfrind Kashaw(Antother character played by Will Friedle. Known from Batman beyond & Kimpossible & many other things) in the final great battle. She was the abosolute best voice director that they could get, given that she knew all of the characters both in the real world & in Exandria. Whilst she had also personally travelled & fought in that world.

Going by the original campaign, we should get some Keyleth next. Then a good charge of Grog and his story. Then we'll get to Vex and Vax. If they introduce a certain other NPC we should get some Scanlan story/development also. Not sure how they'll pull that off yet though as that character was originally introduced between the end of the Briarwood arc and the incoming dragons.

@BlockbusterBuster My favorite character character wise is Percy and keilith comedy wise a tie between grog and scanlan, mainly scanlan, though I would **LOVE** to see a character that’s like a Witcher with a gun and helps vox Machina and that person is secretly the son of the briarwoods but chooses to protect people(basically a son doesn’t choose his family) would care about his mother but never forgives her and hates his father, it would be great to see Delilah try to get her son to join her and eventually he kills her but like with peacemaker killing his dad, he still mourns her as for sylas he kills mercilessly (plus he would have a pet giant dire wolf)

Your Turn to Roll Written by Sam Riegel(Scanlan) and Jason Charles Miller; performed by Ashley Johnson(Pike), Laura Bailey(Vex) as well as a little chanting by Sam Riegel and Travis Willingham(Grog). The song was originally written for the second version of the opening credits of the second campaign of Critical Role. It was also repurposed a bit for a for the Legend of Vox Machina promo video during the Kickstarter campaign. Pretty sure the KS version is the one used at the end of this video. I'm not going to link them here, but a quick google search should let you find the campaign two opener, the KS video, and two karaoke versions of the song to sing along with(one normal, one funny).

Hardcore critter here that has seen everything Critical Role has produced. The 2nd season arc is The Chroma Conclave. The arc covered most of the series. For example The Whiteston arc was 10-12 episodes. The chroma Conclave arc was around 70-80 episodes and each episode is somewhere between 3-6 hours. At New York Comicon they announced that Amazon had already picked up the show for Season 3. So they said during the Comic Con that season 2-3 will at least be the chroma conclave. However I believe they will get a season 4 so that they can at least finish that story up. Then they could go into the Whispered One Arc and that can be 2 seasons. Then we can begin to talk about the Campaign 2 of critical role which we all lovingly call The Mighty Nein. FYI I played D&D for a few years in the early 90's but didn't pick it up again until 2013. My wife asked to play it. Can you believe that and she has been playing in campaign with me every week since. If you are interest in Critical Role do not listen to Campaign 1 if you don't want to ruin the Anime (Yes I call The Legend of Vox Machin an Anime). Start with Campaign 2 since it might take 5 or more years for that to come to TV.
