This movie reminds me a lot of those "comedic parody" movies like "Epic Movie" or "Meet the Spartans" where instead of actually making fun of pop culture, all they do is reference them. They would have a scene where they go, "hey look, it's Iron Man," or "hey look, it's Britney Spears," and that would be it, there would be no joke. They just expect you to laugh at the reference itself. Except with "Mother!," they have religious allusions instead of pop culture references. But it's the same thing. They just reference these things from the bible but don't actually do anything with it. They go, "hey look, it's Adam and Eve. Hey look, it's Cain and Abel. Hey look, it's the great flood."
@theodorejames8285
@theodorejames8285 6 жыл бұрын
KingOfMadCows I agree that it wasn’t as deep as it seems to think it is, but it does do SOMETHING with the material. It’s the Bible from the perspective of nature or ‘Mother Earth.’ That being said, it’s mostly just a bunch the stuff happening.
@Pyro89ify

I couldn't disagree more. It actually paints God as a madman and thus solves the theodicy problem by declaring that God isn't the benevolent father but an insane genius who is too self centred to see the suffering he has caused. The film is also a cautionary tale. It is mirroring our own behaviour and showing where we will end up if we continue to walk down this path. Mother! is more than just a game of meaningless quotes.
@andrewjensen1146
@andrewjensen1146 6 жыл бұрын
The movie has a lot of issues, but I think it is unfair to compare it to "Epic Movie" and its ilk. Mother's intelligence as a movie really does not match the ambition of its creators. It uses the Bible as a reference point, but it is not really a retelling of the Bible. It is a compilation of a lot of bibles that seem similar to those found in the Bible, but it examines these stories from a perspective where there is no certainty about the existence or nature of God. If I had to compare it to another Aranofsky movie it would be the Fountain. I guess in a way it is a retelling of creation in the Bible, but through the lens of a modern society.
@KingOfMadCows
@KingOfMadCows 6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Jensen Yes, "Mother!" obviously isn't as bad as "Epic Movie." They actually put effort into "Mother!" No one involved with "Epic Movie" gave a shit. However, I don't think "Mother!" really examines any of the bible stories. It just feels like it has something to say because people romanticize the bible so much that they're shocked by how violent and disturbing the movie gets. But if you actually read those bible stories, they're more horrifying than what's depicted in "Mother!"
@andrewjensen1146
@andrewjensen1146 6 жыл бұрын
Very fair points. I realize that my post in a lot of ways was a strawman. I think the reaction to Noah possibly made Aranofsky shy away from what could be seen as an actual critique of the Bible. There is a great deal in the Bible that many just flat out ignore. I can only imagine what would happen if someone actually did a depiction of Angels as they were described in the Bible.

Same with Darren in Mother! Scorsese with Silence Spike Lee with Do the Right Thing Richard Linklater with Boyhood Quentin Tarantino with a lot of his stuff It happens all the time and with many ppls favorites so I don't get this POV. It's not like anyone was begging to make Black Swan, so they let him do what he wanted. It worked out then, so they probably was like "DO IT AGAIN WITH MOTHER!"

Leo Milmet: it's only fitting, seeing how the studio didn't capitalize on this movie with a better release strategy. Seems like a movie that would make a bigger splash if it was dropped in rewards season, or in 2nd half of January.

Not "bad" per se, but quite divisive, and many people hated it. if you consider the fact that razzies aren't exactly most serious awards, and in the past they ridiculed projects that many people liked (but others hated), this is within their usual range.

Leo, you seem to have really liked this movie, based on the number of comments that you've made here, so I'm going to ask you: was your main takeaway from this film - we are killing earth, we are God's failed experiment, Darren Aronofsky has a rich but messed up imagination? also, please describe your favorite scene from the movie, how that scene made you feel and why.

I get the hate, but this was one of my films of 2017. I got so much out of this. It was great working everything out, once I realised what the main allegory was. Also like many Aronofsky films, it made you feel really uncomfortable, as if you were in a nightmare and you were not in control of what was going on. Even if you didn't like it, you have to appreciate the execution of the scene when the house is completely packed. The way the camera is seemingly doing it in one take was impressive to watch.

That was a first. I found myself totally on the same page Spencer and the farthest from Dan's evaluation. I thought mother! was a weird freaking movie but thoroughly enjoyed it. Of course it was on the nose and Aronofsky was making his ultra weird film school think piece. I also thought some of Dan's critique was sensible but making any comparisons in any way to Downsizing is very perplexing to me.

Making something intentionally confusing is a good way to make others think you're smarter than them, just saying. It's like when people use a lot of fancy words to show off to teachers even though it doesn't make any sense and makes their essays unreadable.

Me and a friend went to this movie at the cinema as it was said to be "psychological horror" and we kinda.,..wanted to watch a somewhat scary movie? I think it was a bad sign that we both considered maybe walking out and going into the My Little Pony movie next to our theatre instead. Idk, we both got that it was about the bible and blahblah and I'm personally someone that LOVES to read into things but was...plain boring and..ugh it was like a math lesson with overly obvious metaphores that were slammed into my face heck learning for my finals for religion were more interesting xD The only thing I seriously took away from the movie were a headache and... the fact that I really don't want people in my house ever not gonna happen, also better not get a man cause he might invite assholes into the house

Full disclosure I didn't see this movie and it doesn't seem like I would like it despite me loving requiem for a dream and the wrestler. But there is one thing I find strange in some of Dan's statements, he accuses this film of making very simple points in obtuse ways (which he might of course be right about), but comes out of the last jedi saying that there is a lot of information to process. There are other examples like Interstellar and honestly I don't get it. This is not me bashing Dan, he's one of the reasons I've been watching these shows for years, but it just seems like maybe he tends to not like movies that think they are smarter than they really are (which I would agree on with him), but then takes the arguments a little too far. Well, just my impressions. Loved this episode of honest commentary! Thank you screenjunkies!

I'm so happy the Honest Trailer for this exist. I actually enjoy when Honest Trailers & Cinema Sins do movies I like. & I still don't get why people get angered by this movie. It's just odd to me, I thought the movie was good. I get the biblical allegory, at least most of it because I haven't read the entire bible, but I get the overall basis of what they were portraying. I feel like if this movie had been marketed properly or treated as an indie film with limited release then I'm sure there'd be a lot less hate. I knew some of the things surrounding the movie before I saw it & I still didn't allow it to influence my opinion

I agree with Spencer, this movie was marketed so wrong that people felt that they had been cheated and lied to when the movie actually appeared. Ironically the chaos and violence in this film evolved into F ratings and twitter rants. While I will never see this movie except "free" on a streaming service (so I can speed through probably 50% of its running time), it does deserve to exist.
