The animated series (Called "Roughnecks: Starship trooper chronicles") seemed to be in line with the books at first but no, it also makes the point that humans are the bad guys... it's just in a more serious way and it takes a bit to get there because of set up. It's great.

When I watched the honest trailer I noticed in the comments that someone asked them to do an Avatar the Last Airbender trailer and there was a direct response from Fandom that said "ok." It just hit me... Doesn't the fact that the first bug they fight they need a squad putting entire clips of bullets into it to kill it show that the humans are learning? Later in the movie they only put a few bullets into the bugs to kill them. I guess they improved their bug piercing bullets...

Regarding the book: there's a lot of room to argue both what Heinlein was trying to say, and what he actually ended up saying, but one thing is indisputable: the reveal right at the end that Johnny Rico is Filipino is a sharp reminder to the (mostly white, mostly male) readers to check their assumptions that still has value today.

In 'I Will Fear No Evil' the body Johann Smith has his brain transplanted into is not only a woman, but also black... but you need to read it _very_ carefully to even realise that. (story goes that the publishers thought that aspect was too subversive, i.e. would get the book banned) Robert A. Heinlein was a far more complex person than most give him credit for being.

Thanks for mentioning two of my favorite underappreciated movies. The first is Big Trouble in Little China which I saw in theaters and immediately loved. I think Jack Burton was more of a John Wayne sendup. Clint Eastwood was never a blowhard. The other is American Psycho which I went into cold. It took me a while to realize I was watching a comedy. Once I got that, I really thought it was awesome.

Here's a good argument for including this in Blockbuster Summer - it was released on 01/01/1998 in Argentina, which means it was a summer blockbuster in Rico's home country. (Argentina is on the opposite side of the equator for our fellow watchers borne of the American educational system)

Starship Troopers is one of only two movies I ever watched back to back. Ie, I watched it, loved it, and immediately watched it again. And Spencer echoed something that I've always maintained, that it works both as a satire, and as the thing it's satirising, which is part of its brilliance. Also: Doogie Howser in an SS uniform, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Brenda Strong, the list goes on.

Despite writing this in the 50s, Heinlein wrote Stranger in a Strange Land in the 60s - basically a novel with Sci-Fi Hippie Jesus as the misunderstood hero/savior. So maybe he changed his positions later in life? These two novels could not be further apart in their outlook - to my memory; it's been decades since I read them.

Actually, this movie wasn't based on the book at all. It was an independant script (Bughunt at Outpost 13) and somebody noticed the similarities, so they bought the rights and in a reversal of normal practice "filed the serial numbers on". But it never was an adaptation of the book.

It's present for most of the film. NPH straight out wears a Gestapo style uniform. The commercials are just the most obvious.
@josephfisher426
@josephfisher426 3 жыл бұрын
@@jp3813 But it is satire, or just re-use of a symbol that should be familiar to the audience? Movies generally don't do satire well because it's hard to present the necessary subtext without making it so blindingly obvious that the viewer isn't thinking about the story anymore. No one is going to make a good movie out of Animal Farm, and Verhoeven didn't make a good movie out of Showgirls. The commercials are the sort of contained environment that is well suited.

To answer the question that was asked, I think WATCHMEN is a seriously misunderstood story. Heinlein was going crank by that point and I think he was pissed he had to write YA. He was taking idea all the way to its most ridiculous conclusion. Michael Moorcock said by end he was pretty fascist and pro-Vietnam. Read the piece he wrote "Starship Stormtroopers" for more on Heinlein's thinking/politics there. He and his wife started pro-Nuke group and he supported Vietnam. The book is a didactic slog with action. I have suspicion only NPH and the older character actors like Ironside, Clancy Brown, and Blanche from Golden Girls got the script and how to play it. Was Buenos Aires false flag? Movie seems to hint hint it..
