Its perfection is in its flaws. To quote Vince Lombardi "Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence." Absolutely love this movie. For me it makes me feel human.

the only real criticism of the whole movie was just that andy's a dick, and you're rooting for him. but are you supposed to want him in prison for life just for being a dick? and he did mature and calm down over the years. the anger was worked through, there was a story arc there. just not a redemption arc, because the redemption wasn't his, it was reds

The key to Shawshank is the shocking reveal and the sheer amount of time it took him to succeed in his escape. The last 30 minutes IS the movie. Ultimate reveal.

Agreed. I also disagree with them saying the rocky ending/happy ending is Mexico. For me its his escape. Thats the Rocky moment/happy ending.

@@DakMT the winning moment is definitely when you realized that not only had he planned on escaping, and been working at it for decades, but succeeded, and screwed over the warden in the process. the mexico ending is just wrapping the story up. the brilliance of the movie is not clueing you into anything that he has planned, and even misdirecting you into thinking he's going to give up and commit suicide before the big reveal. all the hints are there, they show you everything he needs to succeed, and even tease you with the shitty pipe dream one liner, but without the reveal, you'd have no idea

They say that Americans don't know history, but Lon is surprisingly well informed about the Crimean War! Surely the right poster for the 90s would be the cat hanging from a branch saying "Hang in there!"?It would be thematically appropriate.

Everyday, Joe looks a little less Starr, and a little more Manganiello. Stay well, good sir. I love how all it takes for Spencer to break down is to reference Ready Player One lol Now I want to see an honest trailer for *"March of the Penguins"* with the fake title *Just A Bunch of Birds (featuring Morgan Freeman)*

good choice, but i never really thought about that being a 90's phenomenon because it came out in 97 and i didn't get into the first season. by the time i was really into it it wasn't the 90's anymore

I think Shawshank Redemption is a pretty perfect film but it's hit that point where people are criticising it and looking for flaws just because it is so widely considered great. You can find flaws in any film imo.

I saw Shawshank in theaters. I recall NOT looking forward to it, b/c it was based on a Stephen King story, and I'm just not a fan of his or the movies based on his work... but we just were NOT interested in anything else in theaters, and it had incredible reviews, so we went for it. The theater was *maybe* half-full, and the chatter on the way out was that this was one of the best films any of us had ever seen. For me, it remains an all-time fave. I was also one of the few people who saw Gremlins 2 in the theater. And that was awesome, especially when the film "breaks down."

In Norway the movie is called "Frihetens Regn" which translates to "The Rain of Freedom". A much better title in my opinion.

(For context, in England we're currently on our third lockdown with similar restrictions in the other bits of the UK. Our useless government opened some of the schools in England for one day after New Year before realizing that whoopsy, maybe re-opening them while daily case numbers are at record levels was a stupid idea.)

I am not quite sure if Shawshanks redemption is the BEST movie of all time, or even the best since it was released (I mean, there is The Live of Others off the top of my mind). But it is certainly up there. I did see it in theatres, btw, one of the best theatre experience I ever had (despite being the only one in the showing). I actually picked the movie by accident without knowing anything about it...you don't really get that nowadays anymore, if you pick a movie you haven't really heard about the before chances are that it is fairly sh....
