I agree that the time jumps were confusing and should have been better presented, but I do think they were necessary. If this story was told linearly, you would have had the first 2 or 3 episodes all about Yennifer at school, then you'd finally meet the main character a quarter into the season. You wouldn't see Ciri until the last 2 episodes and they'd be almost exclusively about her. I feel they had to use the time jumps to evenly space screen time between the three major characters. Full disclosure: I didn't really understand the time changes until the fourth episode.
@chelseaandrews5628
@chelseaandrews5628 4 жыл бұрын
I didn't realize the time changes until the fourth episode either. I think that shows how seamless the storytelling is. Usually time jumps in books and other media, feel really jarring to me. Once I knew what to look for and understood the idea that time was jumping around, it was pretty easy to keep track of which timeline we were all in.

Witcher, the show, is definitely ”in on the joke” and knows when it’s campy. The serious-to-campy mood shifts actually reflect Geralt's personality pretty well. 13:20 Geralt's armor changes between time skips. They also almost constantly mention and setup name's of people that will crossover between timelines in the episodes. In one scene a dude is an old king, and in the other he's mentioned to be just a boy. Gotta be looking for that red 3PO arm to find it, the series doesn't poke you in the eyes with it like Force Awakens did.

HaleysTusk I actually don’t see anything wrong with a few individual episodes upfront that are exclusive to one character... and then have the later episodes bringing multiple characters together. With the timelines, they basically explicity explain where each time jump is in the overall timeline through bits of dialogue. Like Renfri referencing Calanthe winning her first big battle, implying that Renfri's timeline was way before the previous scene with Calanthe and Ciri. Or old version Foltest, and then seeing young Foltest and young, and alive, adda being at the sorceress ball. Paying attention to every bit of dialogue in this show is pretty important.

My favorite is when Gob tries to throw the letter into the ocean on Arrested Development

I feel like the show was made for the fans of the previous pieces of material, first timers are gonna be so confused 😂

In polish it's jaskier (which means buttercup) when they brought it to the states they changed it to Dandelion.

For me the existence of multiples points in time was clear by ep.3. And they didn't really go back and forth in timelines, they were linear for each character. So when you were with Geralt, Yennefer, or Ciri it was a different timeline, until Geralt caught up to Yennifer (then they were in the same point in time), and then Geralt and Yennifer caught up with Ciri at the end and they were all in the "present." Though how MUCH time was passing for characters between episodes wasn't always clear just that some had passed, but you could estimate.

I'm with Dan. Put an Arrested Development reference IN EVERY HONEST TRAILER! Yes, I will watch Geralt grunt his way through everything...I love the grittiness. The time jumps were confusing at first, but I'm interested to see where this goes. I like it! Also, glad they're bringing back the fight choreographer from the first episode for season 2. it was the best!

I hadn’t read the books or played the games..and didn’t find it even remotely confusing, I was a little bored until about 3 episodes in then once I realised the time line was switching it got a whole lot better.

The show is fun. It's in my default background noise shows with tng, expanse, and Firefly.

golnectr I thought I was a weirdo for doing that but it’s my goal to mangle Netflix’s rubric. I’ve probably “watched” the show ~30 times now because I just wake up and let the whole season play and when it ends, I start it up again. I’ve been doing that since December. Yes, nerdy. Yes, Henry and Anya are infernally hot. Yes, I’m single and have two cats. Shut up.

The 2 seasons and done approach is also due to their tracking data showing that new seasons of existing shows generates fewer new subs than new shows. So they not only cost more after season 2, they create less revenue.
