I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 15 years and been singing since I was 16. I teach from my own studio and also teach and mentor via email, and online via Live & Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. I have studied every voice technique there is, including Speech Level Singing, Estill, Bel Canto, Robert Lunte, London College of Music, ABRSM, Ria Keen, Kim Chandler, Stevie Van Lange and many more. I have been around!
In 2008 I wrote the Vocaltutor Guide, 21 set lessons for singing teachers to get started, learning to teach, and produced 3 vocal exercise CD/Downloads.
I am now working on my first online singing programme. The Foundations of Singing that will be available on Udemy.

Spot on review, your comments, disappointment and bewildered reaction, I think, reflect that of most viewers and Madonna fans after Saturday's performance. She was so breathtakingly brilliant at times during her career that watching this is truly sad. It's like she has lost touch with what she, the industry is all about. The whole performance was dark, gloomy, uninspiring, depressing, that Quavo bloke came on looking bored and lost, nothing worked, and that's before we get onto the vocals. Very, very sad. Do you think the people around her are too afraid to give honest feedback? I have no musical experience or experience of the industry, but simply as an observer with a brain, had I seen this performance before it went out I would have seriously urged her to go back to the drawing board and make major changes.

totally agree. Is nobody around her giving her the right advice,?? .... Or was she pushed into doing something that she wasn't up to physically. I really think you have to wonder what is going on, because she is trying to do now what she was able to do even 5 years ago (just) but she is just not physically able now. Even five years ago she could still dance, but she can't even dance now, because I think her feet or her knees are so badly damaged from years of extreme load from dancing mostly in heels!!! And I question the eye patch. do we really think that is a prop? I would think a massive massive distraction for someone not at the top of their game. Especially walking down like 50 steps!!! what is that ? Im not convinced that's a prop . It distracts me!!!!! I really thought we'd get Medellin, to me the obvious choice for Eurovision. I couldn't understand why she decided to do this performance, but when I heard that song I thought it made sense - latin inspired - Eurovision - but ...gosh....no words - nothing made sense

I agree. It's a little tiring how she keeps bringing back the whole Catholic symbolism thing that she did in the late 80s and early 90s, with the whole "Father, forgive me, I have sinned, I am a bad girl" thing, the monks on stage on her tour, the monks on stage on another event, the monks on stage on Eurovision. Keeps recycling herself and her past performances. And, like you said, she keeps going for 'flavor-of-the-month' producers and rappers, instead of using more refreshing and fresh-sounding collaborators like before.

Georgina, please explain auto-tune to us in as much detail as possible. Can you always hear it on the finished product? Is Madonnna using auto-tune + vocoder? It seems like the last decade of pop music (at least in America) has featured heavily electronic voices... Is this always auto-tune or some effect they are putting on the voice to make it sound electronic? I thought auto-tune was something used strictly in the studio and wouldn't be evident on the final recording.

I think someone more technical-minded will do a better job from me on this. The technical precis: A vocoder is a multi-band dynamic EQ filtered effect, but auto-tuned uses different pitch-shift technology which moves the tones to those set by a keyboard. There can be some degree of overlap, as some autotuners can use vocoder-based algorithms, but they're not one and the same. Essentially, I have regarded autotune as a sliding scale. You can have it dialed down, to try to make it almost imperceptible. Think wearing make-up, but not looking like you're wearing make-up, essentially to sound "naturally perfect" (but with a bit of help). This is extremely common nowadays to smoothen out vocal performances but hopefully retaining a semblance of a natural feel. This whole robotic/electronic voice thing started with Cher's "Believe" (in the popular public consciousness at least - I'm well aware it started way before that e.g. with Kraftwerk's vocodered "The Robots"). At the time, everyone was calling "Believe" a "vocodered" effect, but I heard music engineers explaining that it's not actually vocoder that's being used but a more extreme setting on autotune, such that it now sounds very identifiable.
@dtaylor939

@@sweeperboy Wow.. thanks! Am I correct in thinking that the more the autotune has to work to get the singer in tune, the more electronic and perceptible to the ear it is?
@sweeperboy
@sweeperboy 5 жыл бұрын
@@dtaylor939 I don't pretend to know the exact answer to that, but I would imagine that the harder it has to work, the more it may remove the natural "warmth" of the human voice and leave it sounding more anodyne. Also, there are things that autotune can correct for, and things that it cannot. That being said, I think some of the choices Madonna and her production teams have made over the last decade and a half in the recording of the studio albums have been quite deliberately to "amp up" the autotune to make it seem more robotic, for want of a better word. This isn't the same as the "trying to seem normal with makeup" scenario that I described in the first post, it's a deliberate choice because, I don't know, perhaps they think it's edgier? (I happen to disagree about that, it was only really edgy for her in her Music album era IMO; after that, it became too commonly-used by others). In that sense, they are conscious artistic choices rather than a desperation to hide vocal flaws (as was the case in the Eurovision audio re-do on her KZfaq channel), but that doesn't make them correct ones necessarily.

Okay. Let's start. Madonna vibrates on a very high spiritual level. It's always been like that-nothing new! Back then, during her First Album/Virgin phase, she had those crucifix earrings, all those rosaries, crosses, the Star of David. In 'Desperately Seeking Susan/Into The Groove', she had that New World Order/Pyramid jacket (and there was the number 1313 on that door). In 'La Isla Bonita', there was again that number 1313 above an entrance. In 'Like A Virgin', Madonna appears as a virginal bride dressed in white. There is lion symbolism. And at the end of the video, she appears dressed in black holding a mask in her hand (like she had been to some 'Wide Eyes Shut' mansion party). That's the good girl gone bad symbolism (later explored in her song 'Girl Gone Wild'). In the 'Who's That Girl' music video, Madonna goes to a fortune teller, there's Ancien Egyptian symbolism all around, and Madonna picks the High Priestess card (featuring a cartoon version of her WTG character, Nikki Finn). And then came 'Like A Prayer', and then 'Express Yourself' inspired by the cult movie 'Metropolis' (one-eye symbolism). And then there was that big crucifix in 'Justify My Love', and that cross/cemetary/death/resurrection scene in 'Erotica', the occult symbolism in 'Deeper and Deeper' (the three balloons, the big pillar candles, the tarot cards, the séance, etc.), all the religious symbolism and Catholic angst of 'Blond Ambition', 'The Beast Within' number of 'The Girlie Show', the baptism/Catholic imagery of 'Secret', the thumb pricking/blood-sucking/Catholic imagery of 'Take A Bow', the whole 'Bedtime Story' video, the 'Human Nature' pentagram, and I could go on and on. As you can see, it's nothing new! This Eurovision performance is filled w/ religious/spiritual symbolism. Georgina says it's weird, she doesn't understand, she doesn't get it, but that's Madonna! She was never your usual/simple pop singer. She was always very avant-garde and highly mystical, a true reflection of her own name, Madonna. Symbolism means nothing if the performance is terrible!

You hit the nail. Georgina knows vocal skills but knows very little about Madonna's symbolism behind most of her songs and performances. The same is true in Tel Aviv Eurovision one. You have a very clear message in LaP with Benedictine chorus and long stairs resembling those in a cathedral. Then there's a message about world ruled by power hungry leaders who benefit from wars and social unrest. Having been invited to perform in Israel, she clearly used this opportunity to address people who should look for unity and chances of finding peace with one another rather than being led by hate, fear, revenge and ruthlessness of our elites. Therefore dark occultist symbols in the show. But as usual people are blind and see or hear not more than poor vocals and dark scenery. WAKE UP As for the voice problems. I can only say from perspective of professional dancer that besides technique, in performing arts what gives a real value for the artistic act is the message and the way you want to convey it. It's specially true with ageing performers. But I'm sure Madonna will fix her vocal problems. She's Madonna....

I really enjoy your comments. It’s really good watching a video of an expert giving their honest opinion. So my suggestion is to focus commenting on this area and not in others like choreography itself, which I believe in the particular one was amazing given the fact what message M tried to convey. Also the first part is, as you might know, from Overture (The Nutcracker) by Tchaikovsky. It’s really great on focusing the words and also consider what Madonna did that night in Tel Aviv.

With this one, I get the symbolism behind the performance, but the vocoder is just horrible. HORRIBLE.

That’s not an excuse for a professional singer. A doctor who kills a patient can’t just say „well I haven’t performed surgeries in a while...“ There is a certain amount of effort and training needed

Big fan of Madonna since I was a child- growing up with Ray of Light was an amazing time! But her recent music is not something that I find enjoyable 😭. She used to be so innovative, but I feel like she is trying to fit in with current trends and music. I remember she rarely collaborated with other singers in the 80s and 90s and did her own thing... now it’s like she wants to sing with rappers and sound like everyone else 😓

I love Madonna since the early 80's..the very beginning I've heard her go from an okay singer technically to a really good singer in the 90's with a vocal peak ability from 1996 after training for Evita through to the Re-invention Tour in 2004...ever since then her vocals have slowly declined as if she gave up treating her voice as an instrument requiring care and maintenance which is exactly what you called out with Like a Prayer & here during Eurovision. It's disappointing for so many of us that love her and want to see her have a real win again.

So many people saying her career is over, so many people dragging her. In her own words, decades ago, Madonna has said she knows she does not have the vocals, but she has the voice, she has something to say. Her fans want her stuck in the 80's, when she fails everyone rejoices, she's too old, she looks terrible, she should retire. Madonna has been about spectacle, visuals, and when standing still and focused, in her own concerts, she can sing. The said thing is that people will keep dragging her as Michael was, but will quickly cry and mourn when she dies, declaring her a genius, saying her hate was unwarranted. Those same haters will come and pretend they loved her all along. All the hate she is getting, for daring to refuse to settle, to retire, to grow old gracefully, for daring to try other sounds, all this hate shows she still has power to change, and that change is necessary.

The truth is haters are gonna hate. Must be tough realizing that a 60 year old singing legend is still adored by everyone, more sexy, more good looking than you behind your computer. Even in your 20's you wouldn't come close to Madonna at 60.

Well, the meaning of the song is actually pretty simple. Only the people who are willing to learn from the past can come into the future. She speaks directly to the audience and explains how that could work when she's singing "Open your mind," "Open your eyes," "Just free your mind," "We can lighten the darkness, Everyone has a spark." The performance itself is actually the problem. It is so complicated that even I as a historian can only guess what she wanted to say at the beginning with this dialogue, with the gas masks, the pillars, the pictures, the flags: Israel/Near East → birthplace of the three big world religions, region is related to so many conflicts of the past as well as of today around the world Eye Patch → Moshe Dayan, Israel's Minister of Defense during the Six-Day War the dance of the sugar plum fairy → massive contrast to war/violence gas masks → death and destruction through chemical weapons, WWI, Holocaust/Gas chambers, Syria Stairs → top: future; bottom: past Wind → change Water → flushes the dancers down the stairs so they can not come into the future Pictures of priests saying "You are so naive. They think we are unaware of their crime "→ Child sexual abuse by Catholic priests wildfires / devastating fire along with the pillars and the smoke → destruction of nature, chimneys from crematoria, bombed buildings destroyed statue of liberty → freedom in danger the pair holding hands with flags on their backs (Palestine/Israel) → peace A performance that is incomprehensible to the majority of people limits its own power. So even the best message will be lost in translation. Oh, and that the music/singing isn't the best, doesn't help either.

For me Madonna's performance looks like an occultist cerimony more than a Music concert. So dark so heavy so hopeless... My feelings is that the entity she is devoted to have left her behind and carried with him her light. People don't buy her anymore. May God bless her! Love you channel Georgina.

See, I'm all for political statements (including this very worthy one) and I've supported Madonna through dozens of them. But the message is lost when the performance is bad, because that's all that people talk about. If she had knocked it out of the park, then the spotlight would have been on the Israeli Government. As it is, the headlines lasted 24 hours and now people are just laughing at her performance. This is not how Madonna used to do things.
