What a great looking hive. I love the idea of the single brood chamber. I understand the concept but not the mechanics. I need to learn more about how and when to do it. Single box is great...ive been using single box for 2 half yr....when there is a flow on you don't have to worry about swarming at all. It takes a little getting use to..the first time i checked for swarm cells in all the hives ....but...the more suppers the more your back gets a work out...i never found any cells...next flow i never checked and had no problem....in didn't remove frames and had brood wall to wall in each hive. It toke sone time to get use to but it works and i produced more honey. Love the video... thanks for taking the time

Why our backs hurt: Pick up a deep frame of honey its only 8 pounds or so. Now hold it like your looking at bees. Hold it for two hours. How's your back feel. Moving a box is what we THINK hurts us. No it's holding frames at 20 cm from your eyes that does.

My last few stings have been on fingers. Almost made it through my last inspection sting free until I was putting the very last frame back in.

Just a couple comments...for single brood management when the honey super gets about 3/4 full it is a good management practice to move that up to the top of the hive and keep a lighter super above the brood nest so they don't feel congested low down where they want to put honey...and not sure why you were putting on full boxes of foundation but putting only 2-3 frames of foundation per super near the center checkerboarding it with drawn comb will give you more drawn comb and more honey...putting on that much foundation at once on a hive seriously holds a colony back from producing a maximum crop, and demoralizes some colonies...one other thing... the full deep super and the full shallow super should actually be pulled and placed in a hot room and empty supers added...the sooner and more often you can take honey from the hives the more honey they will produce. A single broodnest hive of that strength in the peak of a good honey flow with good management should produce at least three supers of honey every 7-9 days depending on weather and flow conditions...but you have to keep taking it away...otherwise the bees feel they have enough and either slow down or swarm. Only harvesting honey once or twice at the end or near the end of your major honey flow will not give you maximum honey production. I keep my hives low...only one or two honey supers to start...when they are full enough to pull I pull all the boxes...leave them nothing...then put on three empties...go back after four days...pull all the boxes off and put the top box(lightest) over the excluder...leave the middle box in the middle and put the heavy box on the top...you should be able to come back in 4-5 days and pull all those boxes and they will be quite equal in weight...just some tips which require some work but pay off big time.

Do you usually put the full honey supers on top to encourage the bees to draw more wax and collect more nectar?

Hi Kamon, in your honey supers I see you have 9 frames. Have you ever weighed a full 10 frame box vs a full 9 frame box for good data on how much honey each produce? Maybe in the test yard....

On a hive that size, how do you determine how much honey you can keep for yourself and how much to leave them??? I have 2 colonies that are real strong and I’m not sure what to do. I’m also afraid of what they will do once I remove a lot of their room??

I must have lazy bees as every time I get them into 1 box they stop moving honey up and started packing around her instead of pulling out new frames. Just found a ton of swarm cells (I just got her laying good )

I think my nectar flows are more closely aligned with yours than I thought. Did you get a locust bloom? It bloomed in the valleys down here but got burned in that last cold spell at the higher elevations.

What is your advice when on getting medium honey supers on drawn? This is my fourth year and I still can’t get a super drawn.

I am running all single deeps with deep supers. That frame of brood that you pulled from the colony, could that be put above the excluder after shaking the bees off? And a person could do that every 10 days or so. That is my plan to keep the broodiness fresh and young and the colony superstrong, do you think it will work?

It’s funny how you young whipper snappers say oh well , just got a stinger out of my finger 😋 back when I had 3’000 colonies to run I used to get stung every day but I developed an allergy and if I get stung it’s like getting hit with a hammer, i have to stop what im doing, pack up , get my finger iced right away and start getting cortisone in it and then I just wait for my hand to swell up till it’s ready to bust open and I get off work for two weeks, it it hurts like hell when you get an allergy too , I just have to suit well and wear gloves Uhgg
