Our first time to Hong Kong came with a lot of expectations. Some of which we found out were misconceptions. Did Hong Kong surprise us? It definitely did!
Hong Kong is a large city but isn't nearly as large as we expected. You can easily see all the major attractions in a couple of days, and experience all that Hong Kong has to offer in a week. As tourists interested in seeing as much as we could in a short amount of time we reached out to a friend and asked where was the best place to stay. He suggested Tsim Sha Tsui and we weren't disappointed. Staying in Tsim Sha Tsui puts most of the major attractions within walking distance. It also separates you from the business center which is located across Hong Kong Harbor so you avoid the busiest rush hour times during the week.
Something Hong Kong has plenty of is panoramic views. For such a modern city the Harbor and Victoria Peak offer photographers some amazing photographic opportunities. The city itself has a uniquely Hong Kong feel and appearance. At times you feel like you are in a movie with the city as your backdrop.
Something you've probably heard if you are planning a trip to Hong Kong is that it's expensive. If you travel there without a plan and stay at the most obvious places it can be. We spent a fair amount of time researching and spoke with friends who have lived there and travelled there before. Hong Kong for us was quite affordable. The Hotel we chose was the Attitude on Granville which was more than sufficient. Sure it isn't going to win any awards, or appear in magazines or brochures highlighting Hong Kong. It will have you in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui, a block from our favourite restaurant Red Tea, and only a 15 minute walk from the Harbor City Ferry dock. Did I mention that it was about half the price of the Holiday Inn only a block away! Red Tea restaurant was about $25 Canadian for breakfast for 3 people and $35 Canadian for dinner for 3. To get to the major attractions on the other side of the Harbor we used the Hop on Hop off Bus. Your pass lasts for 24 hours so you can begin your tour midday, and still use it the next morning if there's somewhere you plan on staying at for quite awhile.
Hong Kong was far more than we expected and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. If you are thinking about travelling to Hong Kong we highly suggest you do it. Just be sure to plan ahead.
