Hong Kong’s civil society has been decimated by a Beijing-imposed security law that has all but silenced the political opposition.
47 of the city’s best-known critics are facing possible life in prison after being charged with conspiracy to subvert the State. They took part in an unofficial election, and they’ve faced more than two years in detention before their trial has even begun.
In 2019, the former British colony saw back-to-back street demonstrations in which thousands took to the streets to fight against greater control from Beijing.
Newsnight has been filming with one of the last groups in Hong Kong that dares to protest. Danny Vincent reports.

Just to make things clear. The national security law is not a law that went through normal procedures like through the Legco. It is a law imposed upon us by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. Whether the law reflects the collective will of Hong Kong is cast into doubt.

My heart aches 🥲 God bless these brave people who probably won't see the fruits of the tree they are planting but they are brave and selfless enough to do it. Hope when freedom finally comes, those who are lucky enough to enjoy it will never forget people like these who made it happen through years of brave fights and struggles in the darkness. People in the free world should never forget their freedom was earned by tens of thousands of lives and still needs to be protected sometimes at the cost of brave men and women.

One amongst them quickly withdrew and cuts any links fron the movement just before the day of the NSL took it's full effects was a clear sign of how egoistic they are. Posting anything about his high life and anything except mentioning politics is a proof of how modern cynical they are. What a shame for those hk's petty bourgeoisie to appeal for help from Trump to render them a democracy. *Heres my unpopular opinion as a hong konger* Tbh as a hong konger myself, it doesnt matters to me at all cus i feel like i still have freedom, democracy and i can play video games all day if i want to. I just dont get the point why the other hong kongers on the internet saying that hong kong has lost its freedom and democracy, most of them literally mentioned that they left hong kong and say bad things about hong kong. They literally have the freedom to leave the city and freedom to protest. like seriously tho, they said hong kong police arrested random people but the actual reason why protesters got arrested is because they destroyed a lot of things, police even gave them warning and time to stop before police start to arrest them. Some of u might think “police attacked some random citizens, why do u still support the hong kong police?”. Well its because the police had warned the citizens to not go to protest area but some citizens didnt know which led to misunderstand and the police attacked them. But it didnt happened a lot of times. Protesters also did attacked some citizens who support their country. Hurted the police who were trying to stop the violence of the protesters. Like imagine how many people were hurt physically and mentally by the protester’s violence. The hong kong government did have the choice to implement the national security law or not. So it wasnt the chinese government fault at all and chinese government never forced hong kong to add the national security law.

The lady in this video was arrested last month for possession of an LED candle.. Someone else was detained for having an image of a candle on their mobile phone From the kocal newspaper the HK Standard The leader of the opposition League of Social Democrats party was detained on Sunday, the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown. Chan Po-ying, a veteran pro-democracy activist who heads the opposition party, was holding a small LED candle -- a common sight in vigils commemorating June 4, 1989 -- and two flowers at Police immediately grabbed her and hauled her to a van. It was not known what crime she was suspected of committing.

This is a remnant legacy left behind from England who bullied China when it was weak in the 19th century. No amount of foreign instigations can creat serious chaos or revert Hong Kong to England. England was strong militarily after Industrial Revolution, hence she conquered almost half of the world. But she had been too over confident, even hailed that the White was a superior race, others were coloured and coloured peopled were inferior to the White. Now with high inflation and 0 or negative economic growth for 2023, English people are suffering tremendously from the foolishness of their gullible & arrogant politicians.

The Covid restrictions of 2020-2023 have been the primary damper on normal protest activities. However, the more violent movements of 2019 were decimated well before the National Security Law was introduced in 2020. In several fiery sieges in November 2019, thousands of the most violent rioters were arrested after gathering in several Uni campuses to stock up on weapons. While in there, cops surrounded and they starved themselves into surrender. The Polytechnic University siege was the most ferocious, lasting over two weeks with arsonists and archers attempting to intimidate the police and the police hamstrung, not allowed to enter with force. The primary purpose of the NSL was financial, to cut off their funding--they seemed to have a lot of fancy gear for their age.

If you are not satisfied, you can immigrate and don't mess with Hong Kong. Hong Kong is already very free. Is universal suffrage really that good? It is not necessarily that if the other people who are elected by a group of people with biased political stances will also object if they are dissatisfied, if I say these words, it is not to change anything, because you will never wake up people who pretend to be to sleep.

this is even more strange, when UK colonial master was in charge, no one in the world was willing to fund for democracy movement in HK. When HK handed back to China, everyone seem all have money to fund HK democracy, and HK formal colonial subjects, all of sudden, gained the urgency to vote over night, once the hand over is completed. Some of them could not help themselves with their sense of superiority towards the main landers. HK law makers, got a set of balls ignored its own basic law (mini constitution) artical 23,which requires them to introduce its own version of national security law for the past 30 years. Who are the people, "NGO"s funding them now? Anyone has any idea?

People in the UK voted for Brexit. Like it or not, they made a choice. Likewise people all over Europe have made choices in elections to determine what their country's stance on Russia is going to be. Let us take a look of what Thatcher said in 1984: Britain and China share a continuing responsibility to maintain the conditions within which the people of Hong Kong can realize this goal. We have laid the foundation in this solemn international agreement. We have created in the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group, a forum for cooperation over its implementation. We have demonstrated the strength of our commitment to it today by the signature that you, Zhao ZiyangMr. Premier, and I, have set upon it, and I am heartened by the assurance which your Government has repeatedly given that the arrangements for Hong Kong contained in the Agreement are not measures of expediency; they are long-term policies which will be incorporated in the basic law for Hong Kong and preserved intact for fifty years from 1997.

Homeless people are the true heroes of our time. Homeless people are not to be blamed for crime and this is why. You can become homeless for many reasons including flood, fire, earthquakes and world epidemics. You can also become homeless because the company you work for moves to another state. Once you become homeless you have to fend for yourself against drug dealers, murderers, and bullies. In some states you get criminalized for homelessness (Tennessee and New York) and can be sent to a mental hospital or prison for committing a Homeless felony (homeless camping). Homeless people are also tortured beyond belief. The law denies them sleep and the human right to empty their bowels which is not under human control. Over time it results in the worst self-esteem problems you can imagine. Your body and feelings start blaming who you are for living and smelling like human waste. The Constitution does not protect homeless people against the ills of society, greed can go free homelessness cannot. To be hated in the law when you have done nothing wrong not only kills God it is a psychological tombstone that destroys natural feelings with mother nature. Dying without hope and being tortured while alive is what makes homelessness the heroes of our time. Homeless people are the true victims of a society that puts money over God. Even in slavery people will take care of their possessions. Nobody owns homelessness except for a belief system that says people can go expendable believing that greed is good and should stay protected at all costs. Even churches are in on the act buying airplanes with the money they make selling the spirit of Jesus. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLCmdtthxsDZpJ8.html
