Pineapple buns 菠蘿包 are arguably the most famous and widely-consumed of all the traditional Hong Kong confectionaries, and Kam Wah Cafe 金華冰廳 in Prince Edward does them better than anyone. Join us in this episode has we explore this almost 50-year-old cha chaan teng and take in the incredible flavours and atmosphere!
Update: the price we list for the pineapple bun is for a plain pineapple bun. The price for a pineapple bun with butter is actually $11. Sorry for the confusion!

I took a bakery class in Mongkok to learn the preparation of the iconic Hong Kong breads: pineapple buns, cocktail bun (Kai Mei pau), coconut bread roll, sausage bun (Cheung chai pau). I am getting pretty good, enough to satisfy my family’s requests. However can’t wait to return to Hong Kong to taste the real stuff! More power to Hong Kong!! 🫶 Thanks for sharing another great video, Sam.

This video was sweet, if you know what I mean. I was surprised on my visit to Hong Kong that these Pineapple buns have no trace of pineapple. Yuen Yeung was more even more surprising to know and never imagined that tea and coffee could go together. Thank you Sam for letting us know this as well as Kam Wah cafe and the interview with the owner's son. He spoke flawless English and that was easy to understand for us along with understanding the passion for his cafe.

You know much more than a local like me. I love the way you interview the owners in some of the video and this is great. I actually love the Mexico bun more than the pineapple bun since it’s a little less sweet. Unfortunately, all the bakeries I visited here in the states does not make a pure Mexico bun that is unfilled or authentic tasting. I also love the egg puffs (don kow) deep fried egg puffs dipped in sugar and the bui Tzai go (rice cakes on a stick, plain or red beans). These two items have been gone from U. S. Asian bakeries for decades. Miss them so much. Thanks, Sam, for another great Chinese cafe food video.

Another great video. Thanks, Sam. I grew up eating pineapple buns, but I prefer the cocktail bun which has a coconut custard filling. Traditionally, pineapple buns have no filling, but nowadays there are some bakeries, cafes and dimsum places that make pineapple buns with different fillings including custard, ube, pineapple, etc. On a different note, could you try Islam Food Restaurant in Kowloon City? They've been around since 1950. Their signature dish is the pan fried beef bun, a must try. Other recommendations: curry mutton over rice and lamb soup noodle. Cheers 👍🙏

@@HongKongHoods Glad you tried the pan fried beef buns at Islam Food. Thank you for reminding me. Kowloon City is also known for its Chiuchow cuisine, as I'm sure you know. Have you tried a bowl of fish skin dumpling noodle soup? If not, search it out. Not many places offer it anymore, inside and outside of HK. It's a rare specialty and very delicious.

Hi sam! Another good one out! Can i ask how long does it usually take for your “tasting scene”?😂. Also, have you ever been told we NEVER use our hands for the french toast?😂. We cut them into 9 pieces in squares. As you mentioned in it, it is soaked with syrup. That’s why we don’t do it with hands haha🤣🤣🤣🙈. Can’t wait for the next one already btw

Thanks for watching and for the advice. In a word, no, I wasn’t aware that is was customary to eat French toast with utensils rather than hands, but it certainly does make sense given how messy it can be. Regarding shoots, we usually spend an hour or two at a place to capture all the shots we need. Thanks again, and more coming soon!

usually when we eat the french toast, we cut them into small bites loll - usually a few cuts horizontally and vertically into square bites, i see yours here is already cut into half triangle when served, but still we would cut them into small bites to eat, that's why they always come with a knife and a fork, so your hands would not be a mess, and the maple serum would not drip off over the place :) very nice videos, keep it up!

7:13 yin-yong drink name is derived from the word yin and yang (term often used in feng shui teaching) , simply mean a mixture of 2 items In Malaysia, the local cafe (Kopitiam) called it "Cham" (mix of coffee & tea) The drink name has nothing to do with mandarin duck, as you said 😅

Thanks Elaine and Steve! That’s a great question. For me it is certainly the contrast that exists here: between the sparkling new skyscrapers and malls, and the very old, traditional facets of culture that still exist if you scratch just beneath the surface. Whether that be food or traditional artisans doing their craft, I love to discover it, and document it so that there’s a record for years to come!

A very nice video showcasing Hong Kong's iconic pineapple bun. And, while I've had many pineapple buns, I've never actually tried the baw law yaou. The bakeries where I am invariably sell their goods pre-wrapped in a translucent plastic sleeve. So, one merely grabs a bun off the shelf and pays at the counter. The buns will not be warm; and, of course, there won't be a cold slab of butter in the center. To get one it seems, one has to actually dine-in at a cha chaan teng. And, so, lacking cha chaan tengs, baw law yaous aren't a thing where I am unfortunately. Interesting how that works.
@HongKongHoods
@HongKongHoods 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks as always Vablonsky, and that’s a shame about your bun situation. Yes, I think that to get a genuine Hong Kong bun of any kind your best bet is a Cha Chaan teng, and ideally in HK itself. Let’s hope restrictions ease to make travel here more feasible! Thanks as always for watching!

That French Toast is the sweetest of them all he had in Kam Wah Cafe mostly with those maple syrup. Sam pretty much did Pineapple Buns and Egg Tarts so there aren't much differences with other cafe he had been. The definition of Yin Yeung is actually called Yin Yang-Shape of two commas with a dot inside to form a circle balance of good and evil. HK used this name for its food like fried rice where half glazed with cream sauce while the other half glazed with tomato sauce and for this coffee milk tea beverage. By the way! My favorite bun is where two burger bun consisted of its Satay Beef inside and hope Sam would introduce in his next coming video. Mr. Chan want to expand his business. Maybe he can open another cafe in East Kowloon or HK Island.

The "yuen yeung" or "yin yeung" is written as 鴛鴦 as per mandarin duck; what you said about the "two commas" motif is "yin yang", written as 陰陽 , the concept of opposing attributes. But as a motif, it is more correct to be called "taichi" 太極 , the ultimates of extremes, or even more correctly, 兩儀 or "the two sides"; it is easy to be confused if you do not use the Chinese characters. Also, the syrup poured over the french toast was never maple syrup, but golden syrup, the iconic one used is made in England by Lyle's, but lately, other brands could have been substituted.

Lovely seeing food from my country of birth. Just a side note. The french toast is served with table syrup not maple syrup. Once you've tasted real maple syrup, it is very easy to distinguish between the two. Maple syrup is too expensive an ingredient for chai chun tang which is similar to a greasy spoon diner in North America. And being Canadian, I grew up eating real maple syrup and I can spot it a mile away. Thanks anyways for showcasing the amazing traditional HK food which IMO is pretty cool and unique in how it integrated the influence of British flavours into the Cantonese flavours.
