a good friend brought over one of his father's straight razors to hone, and there was a couple of pretty interesting things i learned about it until I got it honed and tested. caltoncutlery.com

Pakistan straight razor the whole build itself is a razor just like a sharp sword and their steel is much stronger then all European steel,Pakistan straight razor are one of a kind they’re damn good and sharp,unlike western straight razor where you have to insert a blade in it,but Pakistani straight razor the whole body is a razor itself

Joe, about the comfort edge. Some of my razors shave like butter and others don’t. I have all kinds of stones. It seems that my Shapton stones going too 30,000 put a edge so sharp it is very uncomfortable. I then take my Nakiyama with 6 strokes and it shaves a whole lot better. So are you saying it is the geometry that determines whether it tugs and pulls vs a buttery shave. All my razors are old razor’s, I have bought. Maybe it’s time fot a new one.

as a very general idea, steel type, quality, and hardness defines where you can go with geometry. a proper steel type with good composition, and a higher quality steel with a low number of imperfections, that is heat treated to a good range of hardness will support a thinner edge, and that thinner edge will be stronger and work better than a thicker edge of lesser quality. if you take an edge thinner than what its heritage can support, then it will deform during use, chips, rolls, nicks, ect... and those will irritate your skin while shaving, leading to that harsh feeling. so if you are getting an edge that seems harsh, a slightly higher angle, or a slightly more slack strop can round that edge off just a hair, creating a steeper edge angle that that particular steel might support better. in the case of this pakistan razor, it needed a much higher angle, before that steel could support the edge.

We must not push hard when sharpening or honing. Reducing the pressure on the final passes as we progress,produces a sharper edge.

Excellent diagnosis Joe , the general rule though is Indian/Pakistan razors are to be avoided .

if purchasing new, I would tend to agree, but we dont always get that choice with heirlooms and if we can get an old razor of any make to shaving again then that is a good thing i think.

Joe, I have heard that full wedges give a smother shave. What is your experience.
@joecalton14498 ай бұрын
im not so sure that can tell much of a difference. i like a heavier razor as it settles down the slight shake my hands have, also a larger razor so there is more to hang on to. and wedges, and 1/4-1/2 hollows are heavier so that is usualy my preference.

Hi Joe. Interesting video! I also have a straight razor of Pakistani origin. Would I be able to send you mine to hone, by any chance? I'm having a hard time finding someone who will hone this for me.

hi christopher. I am sorry but I dont usually get into sharpening jobs on knives or razors other than my own. I do make videos to help folks sharpen for themselves though. the stone that I use and recomend the most for razors is the king kw-65 1000/6000 grit waterstone, the last couple I bought off amazon were about $30 shipped. that and a couple of hours of watching videos and practising should yeild you a shave ready razor. you can look through my videos for vance hones a razor, or ashely hones a razor and those will get you started.
