Not exactly sure how an old time barber would do it today but back then, they had these small stones called "barber hones" and they would lather it up with shave soap that they were using and do about 20 to 30 "X" strokes on it. That's what one old barber told me and he swore by those barber hones and said I should get one if I could. He said he was able to keep a factory edge going for over 30 years before he retired.
