Good job officers. And it goes to show how quick politicians are to judge when the evidence and body cams needed to be reviewed first.

I want to believe the Chief, but until he publicly shows the body cam, I still see a person complying by walking away.

No problems with the cops in this situation. HPD did a good job. However, love to see the crime stats the new chief is quoting such as how many assaults? how many robberies? etc. going on in Waikiki and around the island.

I'd love to see Hawaii become, essentially, Singapore. Same laws regarding guns, drugs, alcohol, etc. It'd be pretty sweet. Plus a lot of loud, blustery, habitually drunk mainlanders would move back to Ohio.

I don’t think your idea of banning alcohol would help tourism. Or would it be ok for visitors to drink within their hotels/resorts?

The differences in perception are indeed different depending on the expertise advising. The narrative in combination with the video seem contrary to the point of gaslighting and double speak. Perhaps the real question is whether people and businesses actually feel safe when there are people around who do not listen to enforcement and the law, even when the numbers of crime episodes are down or if indeed there is police presence.

I agree 100% with The Chief. Politicians know nothing about what it is like on the street nor do they know anything about how to do a take down. That was an amazing take down! No injuries! That one officer who took the guy off his feet from the front is a martial arts star in my book. I am a former psych nurse and it is amazing how quickly things can escalate and require a take down. I wish I knew that front technique! Bravo to HPD for handling a tough situation in a great way!

imo a lot of incidents with police occur when they are too close within peoples personal space and the person wants to move but they are obstructed. I think that along with the obvious logic behind the 6ft disease rule, should be a 6 foot police encounter rule. It's not ok for the suspect in this case to stand that close to anyone, it shouldn't be ok for the police to stand that close to them. De-escalation requires enough space to behave and reconcile with the situation, and police tactics of "getting within inches of your face" are specifically designed to trap you so that any motion of the arms can be understood as offense towards the officers. I think this is unquestionably a practice that evolved from supporting discrimination, and should be eliminated from police tactics. If the citizen has their rights, they should have enough space to twitch without repercussion, and 6 ft is appropriate, I think, to observe personal space. Likewise, any citizen who comes within 6 ft of another citizen unwelcome, should be considered an assailant, and should be charged with assault. "getting in someone's face" is an assault, period.

@ja1720

In the original video, it shows the officer telling him he has 2 seconds to leave. The individual says something to the officer before he walks away. The officer announces he’s under arrest. The individual resists. With all that said, we don’t know what happened prior to what we seen. We don’t know what was said. We need more information to draw a more a definitive conclusion

Hmmm. “They asked them to leave, and they didn’t comply”?? The guy they took down in this video is clearly trying to leave when the police viciously attack him. He defended unwarranted attacks, aka, “resisted”, as cops used physical violence against him as he attempts to, “leave”. Watch the video again if you don’t believe me. I watched it several times. The man seen making the biggest scene was left alone however. But after seeing the haole kid attacked for trying to leave, as the police claimed they asked him to do, leave, I don’t blame them for being aggravated. I lost respect for cops when the deemed themselves essential and stole from taxpayers during covid while helping force the real contributors of society out of business. Remember when they attacked a mom of two, and military veteran, at the Zoo for exercising her first amendment right to protest the illegal mask mandates and lockdowns?! I do!

What you don't see is the woman who was with the guy. They manhandled her. I don't think they needed to jump him. There is no more "crime" here than anywhere else. There are techniques that can be taught to deescalation. All cops, especially beat cops should be trained in these methods.

I believe the officers tried their best to get order immediately. When these people don't want to be compliant then officers have to be concerned about everyone, including themselves.
