Honour For a Signalman Braunton in Carlisle 01 05 2024

Forty years ago nearing the end of his night shift an alert signalman realised he had an imminent disaster to deal with, by his quick thinking and action he successfully prevented a major derailment right in Carlisle station. Today in honour of that a class 66 locomotive has been named after him. I had set out to see Braunton not knowing of the ceremony, so this made a good day out even better.

Ah thanks for this Cedarcam.She passed me at Settle Junction going south,i was on way home to Preston from Wray scarecrow festival.She looked fine.All the best.Thanks.

I had no idea either. As we arrived in Carlisle I saw it going South and asked someone if they knew where it was going They said it is doing a circuit round the remaining part of the line the runaway went on and returning to Platform 8 to be named, I was in two minds to set off from home myself, it was foggy and drizzle Now I am glad I went it was a lovely day out.

Beautiful engine. What amazed me was the ammost total lack of smoke for a coal burner 👍😊😎😅

These boilers were very well designed by Bulleid and look to cope with the poor coal we now import quite well, but not always as the video of Bulleid designed Tangmere showed on my last trip here. She produced a huge black cloud. My train home today was delayed 10 mins due to this locomotive setting fire to grass just out of the station.
