To all in the comments: this, and all of Hoocho's other vids are amazing resources to make a true "system", but if you just wanna have a go with one or two plants, it is possible to put together a simple DWC bucket for +-$50 depending on how well you scavenge/search for the needed items. All you need is an opaque 5L+ container with lid, air pump with stone and tube (1L of airflow per min per gallon of water is sufficient), a netcup, a handful of "clay pebbles/hydroton/LECA", some nutes, and you are set!

I also weigh my coffee when I’m making espresso. 7g for a single shot, 14g for the double. Gotta have lots of scales around the house. One for cooking, one for coffee and another one for the green

Hoocho I see you did a video on auto pots awhile back. You mentioned the high price of the smart valves. What you can do is get a 1x1m square tray (up to 1.2x1.2m per valve) and you can get those autopot smart valves which come in a box for trays (or maybe print your own box/cover and use one of your existing smart valves). You chuck one of those in and connect it to a res, put in some plants in either fabric or plastic pots, then you have a relatively cheap autopot system. Would make for an excellent video

looks beautiful there hoocho.. thanks for sharing a cool little compact nft.. i use similar totes as mini flood tables. a 15min timer, a L fitting and some holes on the opposite side test flood till the drain holes size is just right. . just add little plastic pots and media (i use turface and perlite mix 60/40) works great for small plants. versatile setups rock

Love the idea! I reckon a disconnect in the supply hose and a slightly wider table would be great so you can tuck the res under the rails but still access it would be great. Maybe put the res on one of those wheeled removalist boards so you can roll it in and out 😂

You could have sealed both ends of the pipe. Drilled a drain hole in the bottom center of the pipe. Drill 3 holes in the lid of the reservoir under the drain holes in the pipe. Tie the 3 pipes to the lid with zip ties. Run feed lines to each end if the pipe. No need for the table and half the space. The nutrients flow from both ends of the pipe and drain back to the reservoir from the center hole.

I've been looking for your hydroponic potatoes float bed wick system build. Have you not published? Sure would be nice to se how you built and a critique on harvest (which looked great). I grow potatoes in my hydro greenhouse in similar way however I use larger oval tubs over a rain gutter wick system which works fantastic. I grow in perlite and would be interested in your grow media. Thanks.

I love it! Do you have any suggestions for a long-term NFT basil system? I saw in your updates basil roots tend to go crazy and clog up the system, I was trying to think of a NFT build which might support a larger rootbase. I thought maybe a sheet of corrugated PVC roofing, with a flat pvc sheet spaced above in parallel. The corrugation would provide channels for evenly trickling the NFT solution, with the flat sheet above functioning to hold the net pots. Basically the same as your pvc down pipes, but just like one large flat pipe. The idea being there would be more room to roots spread out.
@Hoocho
@Hoocho 2 жыл бұрын
For basil I'd go Flood and drain or wicking Coco. I've had to remove 3 blocked basil plants in the last few months from my nft, it works, just too well. That being said, you could just remove the plants before they become a problem, and use the suckers to start fresh ones in a cycle.

Was wondering if you could basically turn the reservoir around, using its length to support the 3 NFT pipes, making the footprint even smaller. Of course it makes water change a little harder, but could be worth it for more growing area/smaller overall system.
@Hoocho
@Hoocho 2 жыл бұрын
I did it for ease of res change, it's likely there will be multiple stages of plants in there at most times and this will allow for a change without disturbing them.

Why not just use the bin as the structure for your PVC? They are already about as long as the bin and you could cut them exactly if needed - then you secure them to the top of the lid running the length of the bin. Use the "leftover" PVC to prop it up to create the drain slope. Then the whole system is simply the size of the bin and, as a bonus, it would then save you the AU$20 for the table. More compact and less money. Maybe I'm missing something? Access? Supply routing? Dunno, but it seems like it would work.
@_morgoth_
@_morgoth_ 2 жыл бұрын
You don’t want anything on that lid that doesn’t need to be there. You will need constant access to the reservoir to check EC/PH, to top up the water/nutrients, and to do full res changes. The more stuff in the way, the more annoying all those processes become.

Just drop the jiffy’s in. They will sit fine in the pipe.
@Ziggazaaaaa
@Ziggazaaaaa 2 жыл бұрын
no dont do that. the seedlings just need water with no nutrients until they show third or fourth leaves.... THEN you water them or keep them moist in the same media with 50% nutrient strength for about a week... week to 10 days.. THEN you can put them in the system with 100% nutrients sollution....

I'm kind of sure I know what kind of glass that is. You just need a point rounded one would be fine, and then smack it into the glass as hard as you did with the axe. you might of been able to with the blade too. and just a warning it might pop up when it shatters.

One thing I do not unterstand is why both nutriance mixtures together in the water doesn't fall out even they are weeks in the container. But when you mix it they react and fall out. May someone explain it please. 🙏
@CallumJordan6
@CallumJordan6 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate pre sure once you've mixed the 2 parts in 2 different hot water containers, then say chuck them in your 100l box it's got alot more water to dissolve into. So if you had 10l of hot water and mixed both parts in that 1 container it'll fall out of solution pre quick I'd imagine. Hope that helps I'm 90% sure that's it 😅
@Hoocho
@Hoocho 2 жыл бұрын
Basically what was written above. Higher concentrations allow the compounds to combine into non soluble compounds. At lower concentrations this still happens. But at a much, much lower rate.
@atomizer2665
@atomizer2665 2 жыл бұрын
@@CallumJordan6 Solubility and chemical incompatibility in a concentrated nutrient solution can both result in precipitation. Temperature plays a big part in the solubility, the chemical weight that dissolves in hot water will be higher than when the water cools down. When it comes to chemical incompatibility, the main one to keep apart in concentrated solutions is the calcium (nitrate) which reacts with sulphates and phosphates to form insoluble elements which precipitate out of solution. You can try this for yourself by mixing calcium nitrate and magnesium sulphate (epsom) together in a little water and watching what happens :) When making concentrated stock solutions you should use distilled or RO, not tap water :)
