I have watched A LOT of hydroponics videos...I know for a fact well over 3,000 at least and I subscribe to over 200 gardening channels. When I always want a tough question answered or I'm curious about trying a new grow method or system your videos always stand out and seem to be the very best. You have inspired me to put several of your methods to use. You are frugal in your grow methods and meticulous to detail. You have humor and an entertaining delivery and I just love your channel. I've been growing Kratky method out of a small greenhouse for about 6 months and absolutely loving it. Just wanted to give you some compliments, you deserve it. :) Keep up the great work and keep sharing the love.

Also I wanted to give you a tip for micros. If you grow micros in this propagator you can get away with about half the amount of medium, maybe a half inch at most. They only need enough to keep the seeds from falling through the larger holes underneath. Also be careful not to bottom water too high when the soil is shallow, just barely cover the base and let the vermiculite wick up to the plants. I have yet to try growing plants with a 50/50 perlite vermiculite mix but I had a feeling it would work perfectly as you have demonstrated. I'm moving completely away from soil for all my grows and I really appreciate you showing this in your video. Thank you!

cheaper options - red cups, a cat litter tray from the dollar shop, or even actual 35cm propagation tray (i couldn't find the one with the holes online that i have purchased previously from bunnos), but they were about $8 for the pair.

So I've taken this use of this mix of grow medium from your other seed propagating videos and have also let my seedlings grow through the gaps in the bottom. I was too afraid of pulling the roots through and disturbing them so much that the plants would die, so I left them in there. My chillies and tomatoes have grown to the point of flowering and making fruit. I was expecting a much worse outcome as they fight for root space, but for now, all are behaving. They are fed daily at the roots and not from the top. Algae galore on the grow medium, but it's not affecting the plants or the PH and EC at all cause whatever goes into the bottom tray is directly on the roots. It's an odd system, not scalable at all, but it's where they are for now. I have a new idea for future seedlings that will hopefully allow me to remove them from the propagation and then either pass to a DWC, or have them grow large enough for a dutch bucket or then NFT. Great video. I feel theres an opportunity for designing a mesh bottom that slides free of itself and allows roots to go about their life undisturbed. Tinkering on that idea

I'm using 50/50 perlite/vermiculite mix in net pots to start seed, before moving the netpot straight into a drip-feed recirculating hydro system. The seed-raising process is in a propagation tray, on a heated mat under lights. Perlite in my area comes in 3 grades. I hear that vermiculite also has different grades, but only 1 grade is easily available for me. Is there any ideal grade of each the two products that you've found gives the best results? Thanks for your videos, really helpful

I did something similar a while back but used cococoir as the medium and found using fibreglass flatscreen mesh kept the roots in the tray a little better, but your absolutely correct in ensuring right amount of moisture, I spaced them about 5-7 cms from each other so the roots wouldn't tangle much, another great video and congrats on the ducks and chicks!

Steve cheers mate! I actually like the larger holes as when I pull the plants through the roots tend to stay in tact and almost always come out completely. Almost always hahah

Hi Hoocho.. Another great video. I like the idea of that microgreen container.. but why not just flag the white thing all together and just use the green tray.. seems like that would solve the root issue. I'm currently testing the 50/50 mix in net cups and I want to try and recycle the perlite/vermiculite.. do you think hot water and a bit of bleach is a good idea to wash it it before heat treating in the oven?

Would it be possible to use 50/50 or 60/40 perlite vermiculite mix for the medium in the gutter grow system with the net pot submerged into the nutrients? I know if your other video you use peet/perlite for the capillary wicking action, but I assume that in a 50 50 mix the vermiculite would be able to wick enough, or have you attempted this with less than favorable results? The benefit of using the vermiculite/perlite mix is it can be reused forever after being sanitized.

Hi Hoochos, ive used this technique as described and on my seedlings, the true leaves turn black / brown after some time. Ive used no nutrient, just pure water. The roots are not rotting, i checked that. The substrate mix is still moist. Ive reduced the brightness of the LED, maybe it was too strong... Any idea?

@Hoocho

kwame powell fortunately I have not had spider mites. I’m a fan of insecticide used exactly as directed adhering to appropriate withholding periods. I love bees so... Look into neem oil, depending on the plant you’re treating neem oil is the best way to target insects that eat plant matter. It won’t affect pollinators.

Check Springhill Farms videos they use a commercial mosquito oil made from garlic. Alternate with cold pressed neam oil. Alternate neam and garlic oil every few days. Also spray from a hose works. Diatomaceous earth powder works too but will kill beneficial bugs. FensterFarms for root aphids washes the rail with bleach and uses 2 tablespoons insecticide soap with 2 tablespoons of neam oil then rinces each plant and then uses a 2nd bucket to rinse again then puts in a new cleaned rail.

To sterilize you could also microwave in a glass bowl for 2 minutes?? I am not certain of the exact time. For wet Cocoa Coir I do about 2 minutes until the material steams.
