Giving away free stuff with a purchase is a good way to bolster sales and can result in a tidy increase in profits, provided you follow the general rule of making sure the long term projected profit from the promotion is greater than the cost of the giveaway. Appliance giant Hoover learned this seemingly obvious lesson first hand in 1992 when they inexplicably decided to give away free flights worth several times more than most of the products they were selling as part of what has become known as Hoovergate- one of the most disastrous marketing campaigns of all time, today taught in marketing text books the world over.

This video on the Hoover debacle made me think of the Air Miles rewards program, and how they suddenly put an expiry date on their Air Miles causing everyone to cash them in on flights and products they didn't want or need. Can you do a video about this please?

Please do a video on this one: Back in the '80s I read where United Airlines chose to thank businessmen who flew UA frequently a free weekend round-trip flight for themselves and their wives within date and location parameters. After the promotion ended, UA used the redemption data to write the wives not only to thank them for participating, but hoping they had a wonderful time. Most all the wives contacted UA wondering who went with their husbands, as they never went anywhere during the promotion period!

My late wife was British. From her I learnt that in Britain, all vacuum cleaners were coloquially called Hoovers. And that one hoovered the house when they cleaned the floors. So, yes the name Hoover was completely "genericised," as Simon spoke of.

@kuyaleinad4195 7 жыл бұрын
atimholt Yeah that makes no sense at all XD They should've just increased the price to £250 worth of Hoover products instead of staying at £100 :/ Or they could've made it into a raffle kind of thing where all hoover product has a number on it and Hoover announces which numbers get a free flight ticket XD
@tylisirn
@tylisirn 7 жыл бұрын
They expected people to be incentivized to replace their current appliance, in which case they'd want as nice one as they can afford with the flight as bonus to make it worthwhile to splash out. Instead people didn't care which appliance they got, since they were effectively just buying the flights. Which should've been plainly obvious when you have such a huge disparity in value.

Fun fact from an Irish guy. Vacume Cleaners are called Hoovers in Ireland because when they were first shipped to Ireland in the 60's the box had in big writing HOOVER on it then in smaller writing below it vacume cleaner. Everyone still calls them Hoovers today. If you said vacume cleaner you would be slagged off for watching too much american television.

This is probably what led to the demise of Hoover in Europe along with Hoover in the US even though the demise of Hoover is a completely different story. Hoover was owned by Maytag for a brief time from the 90’s to 2006 since that’s when Maytag went out of business over the Neptune fiasco, Hoover was then sold off to a company by the name of TTI that owns other vacuum companies like Oreck and Dirt Devil/Royal.

While the answers that it is a nod to Watergate are correct, it is worth noting that it didn't entet the popular vernacular until the early 1990's. The original investigation into Bill Clinton that led, by a long winding road, to his impeachment was for a suspicious real estate deal known as Whitewater. Republicans called it Whitewater-gate as an allusion to Nixon and they continued to use the suffix for Travel-gate and every other scandal they attempted to pin on him. After that, it became universal.
@eggsngritstn
@eggsngritstn 7 жыл бұрын
While this is mostly true, the "-gate" suffix was popular long before Whitewater, with 1970's/1980's examples of 'Billygate' and 'Irangate' being quite popular.

I found the time frame interesting. I did not know Maytag owned Hoover. In 1992, I needed appliances for my new house, and bought Maytag washer, dryer, dishwasher and fridge. The fridge was interesting, as it was constructed in a new plant by Admiral, an old brand in the US that Maytag had just acquired for the fridge factory. My folks had a Maytag washer and dryer and an Admiral fridge, all purchased in the 60s and still going strong over 25 years later. I think Maytag overreached, tho, and Whirlpool bought them a few years later.

Dyson's popularity came from having a *good* marketing campaign. In the US, anyone with a British accent is (for some inexplicable reason) viewed as honest and probably more intelligent than the average person. Slick filming and editing of their commercials made them look very professional, then throw in the whole "I'm an engineer so OF COURSE I know how to make a better vacuum" and viola, success. There's also this attitude in the US that if something costs more it must be better, all of which explains why Dyson sells so many $500 vacuums when a $150 one works just as well. TL,DR: Consumers are stupid.

You should do a video on what kind of people do the thumbs down on not just these videos but all great videos that would seem to defy why anyone should not like them.

Wouldn’t it have made more sense to include a free vacuum with the sale of every ticket? It’s like buying candy to win a diamond ring. No, hand out free chocolates when you buy the ring, not the other way around.

a few years ago, I flew to New York with my family and we spent about £2500. We could have spent £300 on a few new vacuum cleaners and gotten there for a fraction of the cost.
