I'm glad so far this has more likes than dislikes, I always hear nothing but negative talk about Hop, about how annoying he is and etc. But whenever someone just sits down and talks about this stuff it just feels so nice. Thank you for being one of those people who can share how wonderful his character is !!

I absolutely adore hop. From the first day I saw him in the trailer. I immediately said “ you are going to my favorite character.” His story arc did not only hit me straight in the feels but it was also so relatable. I too sometimes feel like a burden and those feelings of self doubt and pity are so painful I wouldn’t wish that on my worse enemy and to see hop go through that and come out pretty strongly gives me hope. I Also have a soft spot for friendly rivals so that gains him extra points. I replay this game over and over again just to watch hops journey and to say hey. If he can do it so can I. It’s to the point were I’ll admit it, I cried when I first defeated hop in that final battle. Now a days when I do it. Yeah it hurts but I expect it. I’ve played the game so many times I know what’s coming. But that’s first time man. It hit hard. No doubt that hop is my favorite Pokémon rival. Do you know what. probably my favorite Pokémon character period. So thank you for making this video.

i actually generally like hop, he was fun honestly playing shield wasn't that bad, and it wasn't as easy as some people claim, i legit lost to the ghost leader because i dynamxed to early because i wasn't paying attnetion, and the fairy gym toke me off guard i am looking forward to the future of pokemon, personally

My favorite rivals are the ones who aren't assholes to you, but still give you a challenge. Like Barry, N, Hugh, and of course Hop

I think that people were focusing on hop 'trash talking' the player the entire time that they didn't pay attention to his actual story. I think his character arcs are actually one the best and most relatable ones in pokemon. I mean how many times were you trying to become someone else that you completely forgot about what *you* want. Maybe it's just me but it's more times than I'd like to admit. He wants to become greater than his hero, which he looked up to for so long that he tied his self worth to how well he does that. In reality his attempts at 'trash talking' was him trying to convince himself that he was gonna live up to the expectations he put himself to. That final talk he has with the player in the end truly was sad, and me now seeing that he was just trying to make his brother and himself proud had me questioning my own personality. Throughout the entire playthrough I had hated his character for being 'over confident' and when I saw in the end how he was only trying to make his brother proud, had me feeling guilty as hell. I feel like we are so used to being the main character, whether it be in games, or simply watching a show, or a movie, that we forget that maybe we aren't destined to be the greatest, or the smartest, or strongest, or whatever else. And that's okay. As long as we are happy with what we do, I would consider that a life well spent. Applause to whoever wrote Hop's character. And thank you for making such a memorable character for a pokémon game lol.

Hop should be the professor of the next game

YES! This is why I love Hop so much. This is a great video, very well organized and well thought out, I LOVE IT. Hop is so inspirational to me. You see him constantly fail and his confidence beaten down to the ground, he questions his self worth, people judge him, but this guy keeps moving forward. Dramatic I know, but I was so emotional during the semifinal battle with him.. Just how many people are cheering for him, and how much he have grown.. Ugh I wanted to cry because I was so proud of him. Just tremendous character growth in this character. Even after his dream of being the next Champion is crushed, finds a new path. In fact, he becomes his own person, letting go of the burden and pressure he felt by having an golden child older brother. That's why I just absolutely adore this character. He has these wonderful traits I wish to have for myself.. I had so many experiences where I was constantly discouraged of making my dream come true. I still am in that process of trying to make that happen, so in a way, I felt encouraged seeing Hop. He's very relatable and he will always be one of my top favorite pokemon rivals.

I love hop, he is so underrated and deserve more. He had a huge role in the main story with the main character player. Which i say is unique way to use the rival character. I never click with any of the past rivals. When it came to the friend rivals. I remember silver as my favorite mean rival and barry being the only annoying rival. I remember yelling at barry for always running into me and get angry at me. Bede was a great mean rival with a interesting arc. But silver wins vote for my favorite mean rival because of how mysterious he is as a character.

In all honesty, I wish Hop would show more emotion to how he really feels. For example, there could’ve been a brother to brother moment where Hop tells his brother about how he feels like he is in his brothers shadow. That would make it 100% better!

He's also the rival with the best fashion sense imo. Also he's my son and i am so proud of him.

Glad to see another video from you man! I highly enjoyed this and I’m so glad somebody made an in-depth video discussing shop’s character in SWSH cuz it was outstanding! Hop is, IMO, one of the best written characters in Pokémon ever! I loved his development and how profound it was! Hop is one of the best characters in all of SWSH! Him as a rival is a perfect balance between friendly rival and strong/jerk rival. While he may not be a jerk rival, he’s definitely strong and makes for really good battles! And when he adds the legendary to his team, the final battle at Slumbering Weald becomes egregiously difficult. Hop was amazing!

I love hop allways had I have tendency of skipping dialog but after his fight with bead and me noticing he has low self essem I for first while took the pokemon story real seriously I notice the details that when he loses he get tiked off and he some sad dialogue at times he has growth in a way I never seen befor

Before Sword and Shield's release, I thought that what they were going to do for Hop was just going to be retreading the same grounds as Hau from Gen 7 with them being happy friendly rivals that choose the starter Pokemon weaker to yours and have huge expectations set before them by a well-respected-by-the-region family member. But after I beat the game, I was happy that Hop had his own satisfying character development and arc that wasn't exactly the same as Hau, nor was just a better version of Hau's without the need for an upgraded version (especially since I believe Hau's character development was one of the few things Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon did better than the originals). It is a shame that these characters are tied to being some of the ways the game dumps exposition that are unskippable dialogue & cutscenes which interrupts gameplay for people who don't care for the story and people on repeat playthroughs. Anyways, it is very nice to see a video that compiles Hop's entire journey (and then some with some footage of his dialogue from the Isle of Armor DLC; that was a nice touch) that shows what he does and goes through. Also, this is a very well made video; I love all the timestamp-segments / chapters and their titles , and I love all the relevant footage that was inserted to show comparisons like at 4:01 with Hop having a completely new team and 5:47 with Hop acting just like Leon, and I love how each segment has relevant music (mostly from SwSh) playing in the background. Good work! I'm glad that I decided to check out your channel to see if you had made another character analysis video after re-watching that "How Pokemon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon Ruined Lillie's Character Arc " video. It appeared, and I forgotten that I already watched it shortly sometime back in 2018, and I only noticed that I did because I had already liked it. So, you can imagine my delight when I saw that this video was at the top of the channel and was only uploaded (about) 1 week ago.

Say what you will about Sword/Shield, but aside from the stupid villainous plan being shoehorned in at the end, you can't fault its story. Take that aforementioned plot point out and we have a perfectly good sports anime on our hands, and Hop is a big part of that. I really like how he goes from being ahead of you in the Gym Challenge to falling behind you, to saving the world alongside you but still getting bogged down by imposter syndrome (so relatable), to coming back around in the end. I would say "hopefully we get more rivals like this in the future," but then again, we don't want any copycats, now do we?
