Can you use hunting ammo for self defense? Or is it only for hunting?
In this video we test out some hunting ammunition in shorty revolvers. Specifically the model 69 combat magnum in 44 magnum and the 460 Smith and Wesson revolver in 454 casull.

So the Advertised and Measured barrel length of the 460 is 3.5 inches!! Just like its big brother the 500 S&W Magnum! And Utah apparently got rid of it's barrel length requirement. It used to be 6" but the Hunting Proclamation Doesn't state a length anymore.

Impressive results from both the 44 and the 454. What is amazing is how the 454 in a short barrel develops so much velocity. For the 44 to get closer to advertised velocity a longer barrel would do the trick. this test is eye opening, how speed affects penetration with a well constructed bullet. Great test ! Thank you.

Here in MI we can use anything basically. We have different zones, and in my zone which is central state, basically anything that's not rimfire can be used for deer, I could use 17+1 .30 Super Carry if I wanted to, or .357 Sig, or whatever. In our lower state zone handguns have to be .35 caliber+, straight wall and no more than 9 rounds capacity. No specification on barrel length anywhere.

in my state of north Carolina you can hunt deer with any pistol, revolver calibers or barrel length you want except 22 lR. that's the best way to test your self defense ammunition, live game. I'll be taking my Taurus tracker 44 mag advertised a 4 inch barrel but actually 3 inch.last inch a chamber for muzzle break/ compensator.my reloads will be 180 gr xtp hp at estimated 1350 fps. I've killed many deer with this bullet with sabots in muzzle loaders over30 years. I've killed deer using 80 - 100 grains pyrodex powder. this bullet is totally devistating on the vital organs. so I have no dought what the 180 gr xtp will do hunting and self defense. even loaded in my Rossi model 720 in 44 special with 3 inch barrel at 1000-1050 fps still gets awesome expansion on water jugs and live dear size animals from bullets under hide on opposite shoulder. good hunting. papa from the foothills of the blue ridge mountains wishing you well.

In bare gel, 15-21 inches is equivalent to 12-18 inches in FBI pig gel at 39 degrees. The .44 mag is just shy of that 15 inch standard. I am guessing, though, if it hit a rib it would be more barrier blind. GREAT testing.

Gobble gobble. I like me some turkey, good job. Your 44mag seemed about just right for a carry and defense load. The 454 is still a bit on the wild side but in a rural setting why not use it. Both are nice options. I carry short barrel revolvers Ruger SP101, S&W 44MAG, and the Ruger 454 Alaskan in the field and there's no restrictions on short barrel revolvers in this state for hunting purposes. An larger bore revolver teamed up with an S&W 63 or an LCRx 22lr is an good setup.

That was the video I've been waiting for. Now please use the same revolvers with proper 6-8 inch barrels and if you could talk a bit more on the relevant load option and cost per round. May be even do some Pual harell type testing. It's refreshing that you did not try to sell us on the 10mm semiautomatic over these excellent performers. You also didn't try to convince us one is great, while the other isn't. On the subject of over penetration, when 4 guys are kicking your door in and rushing through at you ,i think the 454 casull is going to be the better option. I'm in communist California. In the last 5 years, i have defended 3 forced break in attempts. They were in groups of 3 trying to bust my rear door in. On one attempt, i wasn't home, my poor 85 year old mother was alone holding her 38 special waiting for them to beach the rear door. Even if she could only get one 454 casull on target, i think it would have stopped them all from any further attempts. Did i metiontion 1 of them was carrying a baseball bat. And they knew she was home alone. My security cameras showed them check to see if my car was in my driveway. thankfully, i got a security alert on my phone, and i was only 2 minutes away if i doubled the speed limit and ran stop lights. If your local sheriff's don't catch them in the act, they do nothing but file a report.

Impressive and insightful, thanks for the awesome video. Before the Mossberg Shockwave was produced, I had a craving for a reproduction Colt Lightning handgun - they weren't popular or produced in large numbers, but I was completely taken with the concept. Imagine that 460 cartridge fired from a Mossberg Shockwave (410 model, rifled) that gave the bullet a good 14 inches to increase velocity, plus gave you a place for a second hand to hold and stabilize the firearm..!? I am happy with my Shockwave (as it is), and wouldn't want to change it, but I can't help but wonder what kind of potential could come from a Colt Lightning/Mossberg Shockwave sort of monstrosity.. Would something like this "pair up" nicely with a revolver already chambered for such a punishing cartridge..?

Edwardcollier, the AWA Lightning Bolt was just such a firearm, according to my latest search through Images. Most of my latest searches have yielded pictures of a double-action 1877 Colt revolver. But I had previously seen articles on Taurus or Cimmeron or Uberti making this odd configuration too, though never in larger numbers because it was never in high demand. Regardless of that, I really wanted to try one out, or see one built. I enjoy the Rossi Ranch Hand too much to believe this little adventure could just stop here.. After the Mossberg Shockwave was produced, my enthusiasm for this "handgun version of a Colt Lightning" kind of waned, because the Shockwave did everything I wanted done. But there does remain a slight itch to see such a slide-action handgun, purpose built to chamber larger revolver cartridges. By design it would facilitate a two hand hold, mitigating most concerns for excess weight or mass forward of the trigger guard, from a twelve ( or fourteen) inch barrel. By design it would have room for at least half a dozen cartridges held within the magazine tube, for the length of action long enough to operate fully. Mossberg Shockwave firearms have also been chambered in 410, so why couldn't one also be built in any other monster revolver chambering..? You wouldn't be able to "spin-cock" the thing, so your Mares Leg crowd wouldn't be replaced.. I can't help but imagine how quickly one could run a contraption such as this, through a series of close-range targets. Perhaps just as quick and smooth as any pistol caliber carbine can currently do it now..

Jozefhorvat, I am hopeful that some of the supreme court decisions (pending) might do away with some of these bothersome restrictions and allow us more latitude. While I see the merit to a snubby 454 for back woods bear defense and portability to a point, I get about the same velocities from my 7.5" super black hawk with 200 gr traditional style bullets. Surely a monoflex would come up short as the copper bullets can't be pushed as hot due to their lengths. But a 7.5" super black hawk, or a redhawk would be considerable more cumbersome in a chest rig or backpack. In a pure hunting comparison though, I'd much prefer shooting a comparably comfortable longer barreled 44 mag over a snub 454 when ballistics end up so similar.

Lol. It helps lay down some extra calcium in your wrists! Or maybe that's arthritis🤔 👍🦃👊

Those short barrels definitely are slower than the longer barrels which is what my Big Bore Revolvers are long barrels

In Michigan the handgun only has to be 35 cal or larger and only hold a maximum of 8 rounds

Has anyone ever tried the 180grn 44mag remington umc jsp? If so how were the results out of a revolver?

I liked a lot that 44 mag. You need to teach me how to shoot with revolver at 7 feet I have a 6" group with mine...

Revolvers are some tricky machines. Gotta have the right grip and just have to have nerves of steel knowing that thing's gonna explode in your face. There's a video somewhere in there in my playlists about shooting revolvers. I'll try to repost it🦃👊👍

Have a friend load your cylinder with a mix of snap caps and live ammo, without you knowing which chamber has what. Then hand it to you and you operate that revolver. If you have a flinch you need to work on, you'll know it.

what do you think that 454 would do out of a 20inch gun? I am afraid it would just break apart but I assume it would still be pretty devastating.

Took you long enough to use those 44 mag rounds lol. I gave up on getting a 44, so I got a 6 inch 686 so now I gotta see which rounds are good for carry. Yes, I'm going to carry it Dirty Harry style. Lol

Cool... I bought a 6" 686 about a week ago; it's a beauty! I have a 2.5" .44 Mag though too - but it's a budget Taurus... Nice .44 Mags - especially with longer barrels - definitely get up there in price, from what I've seen.
