What a fantastic result, I couldn't have asked for more. I like the weathered look on loco's, from the late 50's until the early 70's Iived beside the Birmingham- Derby main line so I grew up with run-down manky loco's, happy days and thank you very much

A very useful addition to your canon, Bill! Tackling a two-motored loco (even if there's dispute as to which is the better way to wire it!) and also diagnosing and showing us the problems that indicate a knackered Ringfield. Something to remember. Thank you! I like that conversion. It's not perfect, but it's real modelling and a lot of love went into its creation. It really looks the part. (The Class 24 is easily distinguished from the later Class 25, as the Class 24 locos had a distinctive rounded roof, whereas the Class 25/1 (as Hornby modelled) has the enormous headcode box above the cab. There are other detail differences, of course, but otherwise they largely look the same.

The motors were connected in series. Connecting them in series ensures that both motors run at the same speed (as the same current passes through each of them), but each motor only gets half the voltage (6 volts max). You correctly connected them in reverse parallel.

Wonderful job, it runs beautifully! Good thing you had a spare part lying around. I like to tinker with run-down steam locos, but I have yet to encounter one with a serious case of mazak rot. The only instance where I have seen 2 power bogies in a single locomotive was many years ago in Railway Modeller magazine where a guy had a OO gauge shed layout that had a huge garden loop with inclines and bridges etc. He was running Lima diesels with 2 power bogies as robust and heavy so he could do away with traction tyres so he could run in real light drizzle, as wet track made tyred wheels slip. But indoors you dont need 2 power bogies. Nowadays there would be a central can motor driving all wheels anyway

Twin motors was a common, easy way to get all wheel drive, back in the day, a few of my loco's have twin motors

I also have a Hornby 25 converted to a 24 which I did many years ago and it too has two power bogies. I also lowered it to the correct height. I've never found the need to add weight as it performs very well as it is. It's currently blue but I intend painting it green one day. As it's quite easy to add a second power bogie, I wonder if Hornby planned it that way so they could offer a twin motored version.

I had a 25 with twin motor bogies but from memory it wasn't wired the way you did it. I think I had it wired in series I used a wiring diagram from a magazine that was quite complicated for a spotty teenager with his dad's soldering iron. It was slow but it could haul a serious load of coal wagons loaded with real coal

You seem to be getting more and more adventurous in terms of the modifications you're prepared to do. And you have a good range of tools, including things that I don't have but should probably get, such as gears pullers and taps and dies. I'm not sure there would be much advantage in running that with the two motors. It's going to draw a lot of current, and I wouldn't think that it would really work much better than with one motor bogie... maybe if you really needed to pull a large load up inclines. Basically, the way you rewired it, it's like double-heading, i.e. two locos pulling a single train.

That is fascinating! What an interesting idea. Two Motor Bogies! I have never even considered it as a possibility! I have a vintage Hornby class 37 that is currently in dire need of mechanical attention. I wonder is something similar might be possible? Would it be possible for you to place a basic wiring diagram for us to view in a future video (or anywhere else for that matter?) Thank you so much for your hard work and detailed commentary. Who knew model locomotives could offer up so many challenging permutations!

As soon as I saw the connection linking the two motors means its connected in series and not parallel.

Interesting video, what were the wheels in the chassis about? If they were to add weigth I doubt they did much to help.

You really need both motors to be perfectly 'balanced' with each other! (But I suppose that you know this already) I think it would be rather difficult to do, just by adding a second motor of the same type, like Paul has done. or whoever did the original conversion work!

That looked really complicated to a 'Land Hand' like me,like some of the others have said,don't the motors share 12v giving them 6v each or am i miles out?

Hi Bill ,, Ok so with 2 of these ringfield motors here in 1 body seems to run quite well and pretty fast too.. Now i used to run mostly single header locos when was a youngen and they would work great but if i ever put 2 locos on to haul a bigger train ie more carriages the trains would go but no where near as fast as what 1 single loco goes yet these 2 ringfield motors in this loco you have posted about seems to run quite well for both of them together. The other thing is most of my old trains were triang so are the lima/hornby ringfield motors compatible to run 2 locos at a time. Now i was told when i was younger that i can overheat and wreck the transformer so would there any truth to this if you (or anyone) know of. Cheers from John in Australia
