Hornby Class P2 with Steam Generator Unboxing Follow Up

In this video is a follow up to my previous unboxing video of the Hornby Class P2 'Prince of Wales' with Sound and Steam Generator (R3983SS). As there were a few things I didn't cover in the original video this one was created to answer some of your questions regarding this locomotive.

Re pulling power, I have a Doublo City of London that pulls 12 old tinplate, plastic-wheeled coaches, no problem!

This model may have benefited from a set of traction wheels in the accessories pack I think 🤔 It does have enough pulling power for my use though 😊

My Hornby P2 is going over the small points with no problem but it has derailed on 3 radius track it is getting better I have not had a load test as it has been too wet to run in the garden Ron Garden railway

The steam generator will not be damaged when running out of water. It is one of the benefits of this type of steam generator. It is recommended to use distilled water. The German manufacturers using the same type of steam generator are very specific about this. You cannot colour the water. It will not work as the water is atomized. You cannot see the colour. Do NOT store the locomotive with water in the tank. Take it out and let the tank dry before storage. There is a risk of all sorts of problems caused by moisture in a closed box. It will ruin the model.

Hi, great informative video, will Hornby upgrade the black plastic valve gear and can you fit a better sound decoder other than the factory HM7000 decoder, will the smoke unit be available to buy to upgrade let’s say a new 9F or a Wi Hush hush model, will there be more popular models be available to buy with this steam generator in the future? Thanks for sharing.

The smoke unit will not be available for upgrade as it requires special programming and changes to the locomotive construction before it can be fitted. Hornby mentioned this in the Q&A on their KZfaq channel.

Hello 👋🏻 stormbowman7148 is correct about the upgrading from Hornby. There is a company called TRS Trains who can retro fit their water based steam system into some models. They have a KZfaq channel showing some examples they have done. Hornby do have a Flying Scotmans and Black 5 with steam generator planned for release this year. You can pre-order these now. @@stormbowman7148 Thanks for the information, I think i will give it a miss as I’ve had a few bad experiences with Hornby trains, they have poor customer support in my experience and opinion, I will just watch videos of these trains as I don’t want to spend money with Hornby anymore.

Don’t forget Loco Leighton, a few drops of propylene glycol mixed with the water works wonders for more realistic smoke,

It is not the same as the old front pony cart/boges arrangement as on the old model. The older bogey arrangement could not do set track points and needed a short straight after a left hand bend going onto a right hand streamlined point. The old P2 will pull 10 coaches. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n5NdbKh13ZqXgKc.htmlsi=PCy99kavwAw7XYwt. However, I have not tried it with Pullman cars. I would suggest looking at your video the new loco does not have the pulling power of the old P2. However, the old P2 did not like anything but perfect level track and hated set track points. It all depends on what you are looking for, however, overall if pulling realistic loads is not your thing, the new model is less vulnerable to losing its front bogeys. Everything is subject. Again, thankyou for taking the time to do the video. I believe your advice on the type of water to use is very sensible. I have subscribed to your channel. Cheers.

Thanks for the feedback on the previous model and for subscribing Paul. It may have been good for Hornby to include a traction wheel set in the accessories pack. One of my newer Bachmann locos had this and it’s a nice extra for pulling larger trains 😊 Thanks for watching the videos 👍🏻

I use demineralized water in my livesteam locomotives because normal water wil clog the system and my h0 models use Roco 10908 - Seuthe fluid, but what to do with Hornby steam generator I have no clue

Yeah it does make sense to do so 😊 I live in a very hard water area in the UK so lots of minerals in the tap water 💧 Kettles and steam irons don’t last long using it 😬 My other steam generator locos use smoke oil 😊 Would love to get a live steam gauge 1 at some point 😊 Thanks for watching 👍🏻

I hate the ugly P2. I've got a much nicer-looking steamy than that: a Hunslet 0-6-0 saddle tank engine, named Thorne No. 1. Awaiting a pair of Silver Tay Models nameplates, so I can rename her Becky.

With you on buying Silver Tay products, but not your opinion on the P2's looks. I think it's elegant and classy, especially for a Mikado-style loco that was built for hard, hard work in Scotland. Shame Thompson decided to rebuild them, and glad that we'll have a new one soon.
