The first HM7000 Bluetooth decoders have finally arrived and with the release of the HM7000 App this week, I have taken the opportunity to check out the system on a couple of locomotives. More detailed testing and evaluation will need to follow but here are my first impressions of the HM7000 systems and some tips to help smooth your adoption of what appears to be a very promising system.

I am returing but am an N modeller, but this makes so much more sense than the crazy prices and complexity of traditional DCC - which seems to be designed to put people off! If I can make it work with my Dapol, Kato and Farish, I'll be all in.

Thanks. I'm just finishing off my first full running session with one of these decoders which I'll post tomorrow. The experience has been very positive and they are very cost effective. There are issues of course, Gaugemaster DC controllers, fit issues for the Next18 versions etc. but overall, at the pricepoint, they are pretty compelling - if the profile for your loco is available of course!

Great update, very informative. These products are definitely going to entice some of those who run a DC layout. The cost is very well designed to bring DC and new enthusiasts to the hobby interest. About the subscription you mentioned, the more that buy this system the greater the demand for servers. I'm sure, at some point, a subscription fee will be introduced.

Good basic review. I rate these decoders and setting them up via the app, easier than installing a new printer! The odd sound functions you had is probably because you didn’t install the functions file when doing the profile install. If you go back to the install screen for the loco you can flash it across to the decoder and you should have diesel appropriate sounds and the jaunty horn should be more recognisable 😁 Even if you use the app to set up and tune decoders, load sounds and running profiles before switching across to traditional DCC operation, this is a phenomenally powerful tool that brings simplicity and access to any modeller with a recent (ish) smart phone or tablet for free. I have a decoder in a Piko TT120 loco and run on a Dynamis so cross compatibility is no problem at all @HighFell

I like this idea from Hornby and because I do N scale. I will likely go for 6 pin and Next18 for my models I have. Most of them are N18 so that will be the way for me. I like the DCC legacy system compatibility as I will use this until Android support comes out. Or I might buy an older cheap Iphone just to use for BlueTooth DCC only. Great video as always Eugene. .

Excellent video as always Eugene. My first thoughts are that, compared to other sound chips, these are great value. As an android user, I'm excluded for now but that is probably just as well. First generation of any electronics is always a gamble bugs wise. Like many I don't like using a phone as controller but appreciate the easy tweaking if needed. I'm not keen on the Hornby account part either. As you mentioned, there's always the chance they might start charging for access in future or even worse, may abandon the project if it proves too costly. Hornby has a less that stellar record in this regard. It WILL be interesting to see how other chip makers respond.

Hi EuviRail, Thanks for sharing your first experience with the TXS / HM7000 app. Most interesting ! I bought two 8-pin decoders but I'm awaiting the release of the Android app. I'll follow your advise to already sign up to a Hornby account. All in all it doesn't seem a 'plug and play' as one might think ! Hope the 'learning' curve is not that steep for my older - but young at heart - age. My hope is that this TXS will sound better and sync on the chuff rate for steam engines compared to the TTS decoders I installed in 90% of my fleet. (And quite pleased with the performance) For the moment I use - and will continue to use - the NCE Power Cab linked with the Wifitrax module and using the free but very versatile Engine Driver app. This will be a good reference to compare the HM7000 app. Considering easy CV setting and hopefully also the function mapping this will be a most existing new way to enjoy running trains. Success ! Cheers, Filip
@EuviRail
@EuviRail Жыл бұрын
Thanks Filip. It's not that bad complexity wise - it's just that there are steps you need to do first time out such as the firmware updates and downloading the sound profile. After that it's a lot easier. I went into the layout this morning, fired up the App, which straight away went looking for any registered devices. 10 secs later I was running my Class 73 from the phone without touching my DCC controller.

Good review as usual 👍 I hope that this works well for hornby as it’s a big step forward, I’m looking forward to your review of these decoders with a decent speaker attached to hear how good or bad the quality of the sound files are as they seem to be very reasonably priced. The only OO models I have are Hattons class 66’s and Accurascale Deltics all sound fitted and all the rest of my models are HO European and North American so I have to stick with Loksound, just wish they weren’t so expensive.

Hi Euvi. As you said, modellers may have already invested quite heavily in DCC control equipment, so I suppose the BlueTooth/DCC duality may be useful, but I personally don't like controlling locos via a phone/tablet. However, I can see this will be an attractive option to many. You didn't specifically mention that the tinny quality of the sound was partly due to the fact that the speaker wasn't enclosed (although I suspect that many viewers already appreciate this). You mentioned that the selection of sound profiles seemed to be for TT locos, but from what I saw in your video, they seemed to be heavily weighted toward OO. Wow - that's some computing power (LOL)!
@EuviRail
@EuviRail Жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, I really want to do some sounds tests with a range of other speakers and profiles to see how the quality holds up but I'm stuck right now given the range of locos. The loco selection under 00 actually mirrors the early locos available in the TT range so I suspect Hornby prioritised creating the sound profiles for these accordingly. I have the Class 43 which would be a TXS - TTS comparison. The sugar cubes do struggle on the base side so they do need to be enclosed as you mentioned in order to be able to develop any decent base. If Hornby can get the Class 37 and 47s up there I'll be good to go on some comparative tests.

@@EuviRail Not too bad on N Gauge but then no sound on 6 pin chip. But at €32 cheap to try for control. Only problem seems to be the chip size 21 pin and next 18 both quite large, don't know about N scale 6 pin but will soon find out as I am building a new layout with new Locos. Fitting HM7000 8 pin sound decoder to my A4. works OK with Gaugemaster DCC controller. I am waiting for Android App for the full experience. Interested in how the Brake function works. My hope is I can set deceleration CV to high value (~50) so loco take a long time to slow down if I just use speed control. But slows down more rapidly when "applying the brakes".

I needed to know why they don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so that they can extend the unused abandoned underground train stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock and that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into Five cars per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers. A Stock Trains and also having 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it more Larger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Railway tunnel into a High-Speed Railway lines? The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Railway line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 47 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project if that will be OK for London Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from the Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden more Easily. Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly line and also build a brand-new underground train station so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street can they also make another brand new underground train stations in Chingford and could they extend the Piccadilly Line and the DLR right up to Chingford? All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains. Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and can they order Every 37 Octagon and Every 17 Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.13 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 142MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 142MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units, can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!!!!!!, oh can you make all of those Coal Boxes’s 17 Tonnes for all of those 142MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are told!!!!! Hi Russell, I didn't notice any differences on DC and I'd say that part of that is down to the Bachmann Controller which gives a pretty "clean" voltage. Hi Martin, for my DC test, I cranked up my Bachmann power controller to maximum and was able to control the model including sound via the App. As I mentioned in the video, there can be problems with certain DC controllers that use Pulse Width Modulation so I would a check through the documentation to make sure you start out on the right footing. Apart from that, you will have a DCC level of control from the App. Best of luck with the layout.

Thanks Eugene, especially for the tips. I’ve now also watched the related videos by Simon’s Shed and Jenny Kirk, plus checked out the Hornby Forum, so am gaining a rounded picture. A very basic question if I may, please. For my DC layout I’m thinking it would be easier to buy a Hornby transformer cable and link this directly to the track if I want to run locos with Hornby’s Bluetooth decoders, retaining my Gaugemaster controller if, at other times, I wanted to run my ‘heritage’ analogue fleet. Do you have to use the Hornby track connector Rail when using their transformer or is there a simpler way of connecting without having to rip up my existing track to insert this?
@EuviRail

Hi Will, there is no need to use the connector. This is only for convenience. If you soldered drops from the rails, you can connect to these. I've been using Wago connectors to tie this into the main bus bar under the layout. You can get them with 2,3 or more terminals. They remove the need for soldering or screwing.

Hello Euvi, have you tried putting a HM7000 into a class 800? I am getting a significant humming from the motor at slow speed.
@EuviRail
@EuviRail Жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas, I've been waiting for the Class 800 sound profiles to be released so that I can do a full running session with the new decoders so I haven't done anything with them yet. Have you run your Class 800 on the same electrical circuit previously or is this the first time out? Some locos will give a humming sound with Hornby's low cost Analog controller due to the pulse width modulated voltage it delivers. The documentation does advise that controllers than use PWM can interact with the sound output on the TXS decodes but I guess you're not testing a sound version of the decoders?

Having seen there could be some issues with the size of the 21 pin, do you have the new Dapol Class 59 as I was wondering if the 21 pin decoder will fit in. Thanks

Hi, I can't say I'm afraid as I just got notice from Hattons yesterday that my Gaugemaster Special Edition Class 59 was delayed until 2024 - a year late. I was due to review it this month but I'm not sure if I'm even going to go ahead with it now. I've seen some murmurings regarding size issues on some locos so I need to do so some screening now on my existing collection. I've only tested the 8-pins on Hornby Class 47 and 60s and the 21-pin on the Dapol Class 73. Now that you've prompted me, I think I need to do a quick check through my collection of 21-pin based locos even if the sound profiles aren't there yet for them.

@@EuviRail Thanks for the reply. The reply I received from Dapol wasnt very helpful so I think I am going to have to buy one and see if it fits. I also need to be sure the Hornby decoder is a 6 Function decoder as stated in the Dapol manual (which isnt great at all on fitting a decoder or speaker )

Yeah, I've got away without it for the larger heavier locos (CO-CO diesels) but lighter models will run into trouble for sure and for bluetooth, the recovery time is worse than for DCC.

@EuviRail Жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, the first three things to check 1) you have the latest version of the HM7000 App on your phone, 2) you have the correct power on your track, either DCC or DC turned up to the maximum and 3) that you have updated the firmware in your decoder. After step 1 and 2 you should at least be able to connect to the decoder but you can at least use the App to upgrade the firmware - it should prompt you to do this and then it's a matter of following the instructions on the App.

can this system convert locos to on-board battery power?
@EuviRail
@EuviRail Жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, not officially. The challenge to do it yourself would be the need to create an equivalent to the DC track voltage (12 - 16V) so you'd need a suitably sized Lipo battery with say a 12V-14V output. A heavy loco can draw between 200-300mA so the battery would need to be capable of delivering that. More efficient locos can be in the 150mA range but the size and running resistance of your rake will increase the current drawn. Fitting such a battery into your loco will be the challenge. Railroad locos are more or less empty inside so there about the only ones with the room for a largish battery.

@@GDGRailway47712 Yes but Apple is a consistent hardware platform. Android phones/tablets are made by a variety of manufacturers and have to port Android to their phones. Covering all of the bases in Android is a bigger task. I am an Android user, I will not be rushing out to get an iPhone, either new or second hand. In fact I have an old HTC in my desk drawer, I'll probably try that before my daily OnePlus.

Sams Trains says they are TOO BIG , especially the NEXT 18 , is this the case?
@EuviRail
@EuviRail Жыл бұрын
Hi, I don't have any NEXT18 locos or decoders so I can't comment on that. I've yet to have a fit issue with the 8-pin or 21-pin decoders. The 21-pin decoder is the same size as a Loksound 5 for example so if there's a fit issue with that you won't fit a Loksound 5 either. Most of the locos Sam's Trains was testing on should have had 6 or 8-pin decoder sockets in my opinion but as I say I'm in the NEXT18 world so I just don't have the experience with these decoders.

Questions ;- 1) Range with Bluetooth...? I have a layout fifty feet long.....and previously didn't opt for the Bachmann Bluetooth system as I was concerned about range. 2) I also have a spur into the garden, with it going some 150' - 200' from base. Presumably, this Bluetooth system simply wouldn't work.....?
@EuviRail
@EuviRail Жыл бұрын
I've done some testing around the house (2 storey, 4 Bed + train room) and it will work from within any room within the main footprint of the house which means worst case it's traversing a single block wall and a floor and ~20-25 ft. Once I step into the utility and another wall comes into play it's gone. Hard to say how well this translates into uninterrupted distance. I'd say 50ft with line of sight will probably work but 150-200' in the garden would be out of range. The limited size of the decoder and hence the Bluetooth antenna is a limiting factor here.

I'm kind of suspecting not given that N Gauge could be seen as a competitor to TT:120. Hornby's priority will definitely be to service their own 00 and TT ranges first. Good question though.
