its an okay model set, but what really upset me is the trailing truck on the 4472, its literally fixed in place and instead of being mounted to a turning device so it can pivot under the cab (by this I mean so the wheel set can pivot around curves while the outer frame of the truck is still rigid) and the wheels are flat not flanged. I have some higher end Hornby A3's and A4's, I'm now receiving my W1's, the reason for the flangeless trailing truck wheel set is for the engines to be able to negotiate the curves without having any problems that would force them to be ran on larger diameter curves.

Usually manufacturers do that to get a more realistic looking model. I personally don't really mind, as long as the wheels touch the track but don't get caught on it when going around corners. But to be fair I've never personally owned one.

The Flying Scotsman locomotive looks superb. Does the set also include brake lines? The only letdown in this set is the controller. It also is the reason why you can hear the loco's motor 'whine'. With a better controller, the loco is much quieter. Cheers EJ

Hornby train sets are usually geared towards beginners from what I've heard. They're not super high quality but have all the essentials.

I got this for Christmas! It was pretty good and I was having fun when all of the sudden, when I switched the switch track piece that comes with the set, the controller stopped working. Can anyone relate to this?

If you use Bachmann E-Z Track you can easily do it. I have a 4x8 set up in my bedroom and there's plenty of space

That’s the Thomas version! The real Flying Scotsman DID have smoke deflectors in its A3 form but that was during the British Railways era. The second tender wasn’t added until preservation but Scotsman didn’t need it anymore so it was given to an A4 called Bittern. The second tender was removed before Scotsman was rebuilt into it’s late BR form.

@@solar_9878 The old Hornby Black controller with the red knob is a fantastic controller. Also Gaugemaster Combi controllers are amazing. Both can be found on eBay quite cheap.

The quality of the loco and carriages looked rather cheap to me and that buzzing sound is really poor. Not impressed Hornby.

Yes it is known to be poor model. The Railroad DCC with sound version (bought 2019) is a dog and lurches and leaps like a mad thing despite Hornby having had it back twice, they just fail to to fix it.
