GAMECHANGER OR GIMMICK? WE FIND OUT! | CAB CAM RUN & INCLINE TEST | JUST ADD TAP WATER!
In a nutshell short…
• Hornby Steam Generator...
IMPORTANT ESSENTIALS & MYTH BUSTING ONCE LOCO IS CONNECTED TO YOUR GADGET SEE BELOW
This is an ‘out of the box, ready to run’ model.
Just add Drinking Tap Water. I always filter mine anyway but, this is not necessary at all and clarified by Hornby.
Procedure as follows…
Fit the single holed, push in chimney supplied, when running with the smoke generator by removing the double chimney.
MYTH DISPELLED! - The Smoke Generator does not need filtered or distilled water. Just like modern household irons no longer require this, neither does the Hornby Smoke Generator. Yes, you could use but, it is not necessary or required. It just needs Tap Water.
This is a brand new Patented Hornby Ultrasonic Device.
No heat is generated.
Add up to 5ml using the pipette provided, away from the track or layout. Angle pipette at 30 degrees into the inlet hole, located by simply removing the Magnetic Smokebox door. You Do Not fill through the chimney stack.
Let the wick in the patented device soak and prime for a couple of minutes. It will then begin releasing steam. This is done by turning your sound function on via the HM|DCC connected app.
A little more water (approx 1.5 ml) can be added after this soak time if required but, do not overfill obviously.
You know the Steam Generator function is on if, the Sound is activated. Be patient. PS. You can't turn the Steam on or off any other way.
Turning the sound off stops the smoke & running with the sound on gives a full boiler a good 30mins of this superb smoke effect. It smokes more at lower speeds and as it would in real life. Obviously more starts & shunts will use more water, coasting less so times will alter slightly.
DO NOT add anything else apart from drinking tap water. NO OILS, NO PAINTS, NO DYE. These would clog it up.
Play around with Safety Valve & Injector sounds etc for added effects. Great fun!
It is not a TRS fitted unit that uses deionised water and is bought through them and fitted by them to your locomotive/s.
The Hornby steam generator only blows steam out of the chimney and not from below, as if coming from the pistons.
Again…
Tap water will Not clog up the system.
This is a new, patented, ultrasonic device. It does not need to heat up, as I initially presumed in the video & have now added subtitles 16:10 & 17:00.
The Water filler inlet port is located by simply removing the tilted back, twin magnetic smokebox door front away from the locomotive, which snap locates back into place as you offer it back up. It's very well made & well designed.
I added approx 4 x 1ml gentle water squirts so, a total load of approx 4ml in the making of this video.
PS As the water is used up the smoke will slowly begin to 'Peter Out' & you'll see this on my last Cab Camera shots filmed from behind but, above the 'Prince Of Wales' looking down the boiler & ahead down the track as it runs from Lofthouse. These shots can be seen & alternate with the looking back at the Loco Cab Cam' view on the first Steam run from Lofthouse Station toward the 'Lovers Leap' Suspension Bridge. In reality these shots were filmed at the end of the 4th run.
Make sure your Locomotive has no water left inside before carrying out any maintenance work & use the pipette to suck out any water residue left in the boiler via the filling port .
Always read the Instructions beforehand.

@@andrewmeah3082 It runs with or without steam or water in it. The sound and loco operates just as any one of the others with the TXS sound decoders in. All good. As the water is used up the steam will Peter out that’s all and that’s how you want it before longer storage or maintenance work 👍

It's not touching metal, but in a plastic container. There are no metal parts that can rust. The mouth of the ultrasone is aluminium, if I look at the ultrasone component I have. Btw, water can't rust. 😉

Okay. Do state I use only use/drink filtered water in the home, as my supply apart from being heavily chlorinated on certain days may carry contaminants but, why do you state distilled. Is it because of the fears regarding airborne contamination being blown into the atmosphere?

Gimmick yes....I cannot see the point of a massive loco puffing out steam no matter how good the steam is, if it cannot pull more than Thomas the Tank Engine. I guess if your priority is steam rather than realistic load it will be fine.....However, your video is a great watch as far as content is concerned. The only constructive criticism I have is the video quality is poor. 1080HD is way past it as far as small detailed items are concerned. You would do a lot better if you shot all in high quality 4K.....cheers.

Thank you ever so much Paul. I did film it all in 4K but, see my other latest videos. For some unbeknown reason Apple, wouldn’t let me render in 4k for this one. Maybe my cam settings slipped for some bits, not really sure. That was disappointing but, found it looked okay tbh on iPhone, iPad and my 54” screen that really shows that sort of thing up. Maybe check your playback settings too as a slow internet can render down quality 🙏

It only struggled on the incline which, at steepest point is 2.35 degrees with over 4 coaches but, the compromise made probably by having a steam generator fitted is definitely worth it for me and don’t have massive lengths of station planned so, fits in well 👍

You probably have the same as me a 14 Pro Max. Sadly you can never get the quality with a phone no matter what the blurb says. In my opinions phones are a waste of time for high quality videos no matter what apple say. What you need to remember is a lot of people watch Model railway stuff on their large smart tv. When you watch phone videos on this it is wanting big time. I enjoyed the editing and the camera videoing the loco in steam from the front. I did look into doing this, however the price of the GoPro to do this in any kind of quality is just not viable in my view. I will have a look at a later video right now @@modeloco

@@PaulBriden Got a 15 and yes it’s probably the cab camera setting that slipped back from 4K in all the tasks being done at once. I’ve studied cameras no end and most suffer from cropping in 4K, then Apple doesn’t always like the formats they use with most being more windows friendly like Sony and on top audio issues being always slightly out of sync. Finally the bigger Panasonic ones that seem great are still quite expensive big units to get into more awkward spots
@PaulBriden
@PaulBriden 3 ай бұрын
It takes a lot of skill in editing to get the sync right. That is the bigger skill. I use Panasonic cameras. You are correct there is only a certain you can crop and then you get too much noise in a video. Hence why in this video I am using two cameras, I try to zoom on the target post edit it looks tripe. I can link the cameras using the phone as a control unit or have one camera as master and the other a slave. The issue is unless you have excellent internet their is lag, not an issue indoors, however, the problem is the quality is 1080HD. You can see the camera just below the target. The trick is not to shoot the camera. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fa6pbJZyucWvoH0.htmlsi=EN7wTrnZoZzmLzU4@@modeloco

It would appear so in some respects. I’d not heard about TRS but, understand a lot more now. Hornby version is tap water and a patented new design but, no under blow steam which may suit some more. Out of box and very cost effective though with a big name behind it 🙏

About time UK steam outline models had close coupling between the engine & tender. I don't understand sprung buffers either as they don't touch others. Steam is still not convicing. Pulling power poor, sound poor (although the whistle was nice).
