All valuations were correct at the time of broadcast. This collection of toy trains is a mixed bag, but contains some interesting pieces nonetheless. One of particular note is the Metropolitan train and two carriages, representing the first time Hornby made a locomotive based on a real train. Hugh Scully and the experts from Antiques Roadshow take a look at some fantastic antiques and the history and stories surrounding them. This clip was filmed in Blackpool in 2000.
Welcome to the home of Antiques Roadshow on KZfaq. Here you'll find all the best clips from Britain's most popular antiques appraisal show. From items that have been handed down the generations to those picked up in junk shops, discover their history and delight in the possibility that it could in fact be a priceless treasure.

Ah memories of the metropolitan loco. When I was a kid a nice driver let me in the cab for a ride from Liverpool street to Baker street.

I remember them too Barry, you knew when the train was about to go, because all the light bulbs dimmed as they sapped the power!😆

Wow, realistic values. I would like to see the Basset Lowke loco restored and running. Mind you every model railway shop will have middle aged men bringing their toys down from their loft demanding the shop buys them thinking they have a fortune when in reality most of it will be worthless. Having had Mr Angry Bloke and his mates shout at me "But they had the same thing on the Antiques Roadshow"....they don't believe you when you say no "Yours is a mass produced plastic Tri-ang model of the 1960s not a pre war Basset Lowke model." As they wave a very battered Princess Elizabeth with no tender in your face.

If you read the full title you will see this is 24 years old. At that time £1k was probably realistic but time has moved on with costs as has the rarity

The most interesting item is the Metropolitan Electric locomotive, solely because it’s the High Voltage version ( powered direct from mains via a variable resistance and 2 lightbulbs) as they were so dangerous to operate, at that voltage, they weren’t around too long in the U.K. the British Govt legislated against mains powered toy trains in the UK( they were still sold in France and mainland Europe, it didn’t matter too much to the British Govt if French children got electrocuted)

Anyone else cringing at how roughly she’s handling those? I mean, she seems to know what she’s doing, but yikes. I would be a bit more gentle with them.

No, she is handling them fine. With total respect. The table is felt. And she never banged any of them together.

The comment about the power unit being letahl rings true. I believe the early eletrical transformer unit was, to say the least, dodgy. Some earlier ones, made in Germany, were even worse, being fed directly from the mains, with a large, red bulb to act as a votage reducer!

That metropolitan set cost £5 back in 1925, this was a whole weeks average earnings back then. Now you can shut the kids up with a basic train set for oh £150? Bit less or a bit more depending on how much pestering the kids do for a specific one. That's about 1/4 of the average weekly wage. Good old days were alright but we definitely have it a bit better now.

Me blinking Hornbee has done nutin but let me down. Saturday nights is train night in me neck of the Vile, when she smoked up, melted down taking half of Plasticville with she. As for a bloke like me, I`d gut mine out and replace the motor with a Marx single reduction. Hi Chuck! it`s Me.

This woman strikes me as something of an imposter. I believe the voice to be affected rather than gained from one of our grand, old schools. Which is possibly understandable as an antiques dealer in the early noughts (?). I suppose it could’ve been filmed this week because the AR never changes and everyone has always looked the same throughout the ages. Though I do miss the chap who looked like a butler that had been allowed to grow out the hair in his upper lip. Eric somebodyorother… I wanna say “Pickles” but I know dat ain’t really his fuggen surname, like.
