Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. New Years. Honestly, not my favorite of the holidays. It’s cold. Sequin Dresses are super uncomfortable. Everyone’s Drunk. And a midnight kiss is overrated. So I wanted to prove that New Years sucks because it has a dark and dirty past. And I was right. But once I read the story, I wasn’t very happy to be right. Because let me tell you, this one is messed up. In today’s story we get into the very dark story of Heartbreak/Hiring Day.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

Grew up southern and our history book definitely glossed over the dark parts of slavery, to "AND THEY WHERE SUDDENLY FREEE YAY!!!" The literature was also incredibly laddened with "These poor plantation owners.... These poor southern white people." They sure as heck left out the part on heartbreak day. Which honestly moved me to tears. I can definitely say I had so taught bias based on the lack of education in this subject, and I intend to shed them further. Thank you.

The older a person is the more whitewashed their history was taught in school. There are still groups who want to purposely remove this part of history completely. When you hear the words "ban CRT in schools" this is what it means. They wish to never speak of this history. Why? They wish to repeat it. For real. The prison system is filled with people who work for pennies a day. The state or federal govt. literally owns these human beings.

We had to read Harriet's book for one of my college classes and it was so hard to get through. The rage and disgust I felt as I annotated it made me have to take breaks. The people who did those horrible things laughed in men, women, and children's faces as they were being tortured and still felt like they had the right to call themselves honorable and godly people. They even tormented them when they were able to go into church. There is more to it and I highly recommend both book.

Thank you so much for sharing our stories in the way that you do. As a black southerner I knew this from my grandparents/church community- and as a teacher I can confirm it’s not taught in schools. I really appreciate the care you take in keeping our stories alive, and introducing America’s history to a new audience.

The week between Christmas and new year where they do all the "nice" things for the slaves so they won't revolt is like when a company throws a pizza party for their employees. "We love and care so much about our workers. What? A livable wage? Here, have some pizza!"

My mother used to tell me how much our history has been rewritten. I had no idea about the new year, & what it used to represent. Thank you for bringing this darkness to light. So much was never taught & STILL isn't. Appreciate you delving in & sharing your research. No matter how disturbing, it needs to be KNOWN, not sugar coated. Keep bringing it! 🕯️

Happy new year Bailey! As a Swedish person, living in France I find it really interesting listening to your Dark Histories. Maybe we get a bit more of “real” American history than you do in the US?! I don’t think this is only American. A lot of people (or countries) with suspish backgrounds tend to try to “cover it up” whilst the people living “on the other side of the fence” can make a more truthful picture of the things that have been/are going on… I am constantly shocked when I see what cruelties human (?) people do to each other on this planet 🤮 If you want to learn about absolute horrific cruelty you should look into how homosexual persons are treated in a lot of Islamic countries. I promise I was crying my eyes out and it makes me sick to my stomach!!!😡🤬😭 I think you are doing a great job with your pod and I hope that you make some people wake up and see what has been going on/is going on. 🙏🏼

You're absolutely right! I learned things about American history like slavery and the massacre of the North American indigenous people while attending Canadian schools. I was shocked when I realized how much of that same information isn't part of American curriculum! And I think you're right too that we tend to gloss over the worst things about ourselves but we have no problem telling the truth about everyone else. We'll have to remember this so we can make sure someone's recording the truth somewhere because we know we don't always get it at home! And I'm going to go read up on what you suggested although I'm already dreading it 😞. The most important thing we can do though is to be informed so here goes 🫣🥺 Thank you ❤️

@@Peregrina just like I think other countries could teach Canadian students some pretty terrible things about the Canadian government and its history, probably even worse than the things we already know. But you're absolutely right. Nobody likes to acknowledge the worst of themselves but that's the thing. These things happened before our generations so it's not like we did these things personally so what's the shame in telling the truth? That's what I don't understand. They happened before us and created issues that are still being felt today so let's collectively repair those traumas instead of perpetuating the cycle, you know?
@Peregrina

@@sashagabor76 I don't defend the practise to keep quiet about dark history. I pointed out it's not just the American school system doing it. I do believe schools should do better.
