Thanks very much for the film list, Emma. I had no idea about the Bender family being the inspiration for "The Devil's Rejects", so you can still learn something new every day. Most of the films you mentioned I have seen, with the exception of Requiem and (maybe) American Crime. Obviously, two of my all-time favorite horror films are based on real events: Psycho (Ed Gein) and Scream (Gainesville Ripper). Both cases are incredibly horrific in real life. However, if there is a lesser-known film I could recommend, that would be "Hunt For The Night Stalker" (1989). While only a made-for-TV movie, it follows the true story of the Night Stalker murders in Los Angeles, 1985. I was in high school at the time and some of the murders happened in local areas.

I wouldn't classify it as horror per se, but with Anne Perry recently passing away Heavenly Creatures is at the top of my mind. I saw that in the theater and it shook me to my very core. Hi Emma, delighted you are delving into the 'true' aspect of film. The old adage 'fact scarier than fiction' really applies here!!. I saw The Entity' when I was way too young and I was disturbed for years!. My friend watched the 'Exorcism of Emily Rose' and never watched another horror film again. 'Dead Ringers' scared me for years, I am watching the new reimagining of it with Rachel Weisz (who is spectacular), but being a child of eight years old, watching it as my parents were out and the nightmares it caused is unforgettable. As always, great picks! I love your taste and your synopsis. Keep them coming!!. Much appreciation from Ireland!. Love your hair!!.

I first even heard of "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" from my mom and her sisters, and upon watching it for the first time, it scared the living bejesus out of me and it also became one of my favorite horror movies of all time, like ever. Correct me if I'm wrong, Eli Roth's "Hostel" is also based on true events because of a disturbing ad that people can go to Thailand and pay $10,000 to go to someone else's room and shoot someone in the head. Roth saw the website, being disturbed by it and gave him the idea for his next project after "Cabin Fever", and that's where he wrote and directed "Hostel".

It is funny, I was messed up by The Girl Next Door, while my mom was messed up by The Entity. She had nightmares on and off for two weeks after seeing The Entity in the cinema. While The Girl Next Door, which I did not finish, made me throw up several times, and just kind of made me depressed for a while. I think there is something about the wolf pack mentality of the Sylvia Likens case that just unsettles me. Torturing and raping a sixteen-year-old girl was an after-school activity for some of the kids who participated, while others felt scared if they did not participate. I would love a based on a true story thriller edition. My favorite based on a true story movie is I Know My First Name is Steven. It is not really a thriller, just a freaking tragic story. A good "thriller" that is based on a true story is All the President's Men. I did not know that I would be so invested watching it, because it was before my time, but I know how Watergate ended. But the pacing, stellar acting, and atmosphere made the film feel like an edge-of-your-seat thriller.

I've actually heard about the Benders (Heh, heh... I'm trying not to laugh, given I'm English). Yeah, an episode of a fascinating show called Deadly Women, focused on Kate Bender. There's some right monsters on that series. Girls killing friends... mums killing their kids... their entire families at times. Excellent list Emma. A word of adjustment. Everyone repeats that Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer was released in 1986. But in fact apart from a few festival goers (there were far, far fewer festivals then) NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY saw this film until 1990, which is when I saw it in New York. Why? It couldn't get distribution, which means technically it wasn't released until 1990. We heard of it in the late 80s, but we couldn't see it until it was officially released in 1990. Wikipedia will back this up. And for me this was the first true 90s style horror film. (Evil Dead was similar. Everyone says 1981, but again Joe Bob Briggs was howling to get it released for "red meat night" in 1982 and he had only heard of it not seen it. Also the Official Vincent Canby New York Times review, only published the week of the actual release, was dated April 24, 1983. Wikipedia lists the official distributed release as April 15th 1983. It was just considered too intense. I first saw it as a midnight showing in April 1983.) Because of the multiplicity of festivals these days and the vagaries of streaming people tend to take the release dates as listed on IMDb as gospel. But for those of us who were there, these films were only rumors for years. Can one say a film is actually released if it plays a festival? See Pulp Fiction. Is the release date its official date listed or when it played at Cannes 6 months earlier? It's a real question.
@spookyastronauts
@spookyastronauts Жыл бұрын
I always go by IMDB because if I change the film's release date for when im able to see them it will be different to everyone else, given we sometimes get movies a whole year late. Pearl just came out here so should it be Pearl 2023? I go by IMDB as a way to standardize films. With Covid many films that were labeled 2019 came out in 2021 aka Saint Maud.. it's just the way it goes, unfortunately. Many countries get different films in different years... that's why you can't even take the films first wide release as the date.

I hesitate to re-ascribe a work of art to a particular decade, as I think it does a disservice to the artists. There are quite a few films from the 80's in the vein of "Henry" (which was shot in 1985, btw): Gerald Kargl's Angst (1983), Confessions of a Serial Killer (1985), Rivers Edge (1986) The Thin Blue Line (1986), to name a few. Sorry for the digression, but I see people do this with music too (i.e. many claim that Violent Femmes' hits "Blister in the Sun", "Add it Up", "Kiss off", "Gone Daddy Gone", etc. are "quintessential 90's" songs, even though they came out in 1983. This might be how the Mandela Effect originates. :)
@TheAnadromist
@TheAnadromist Жыл бұрын
@@deargabby74 A case can be made that the Violent Femmes were easily an 80s band, I certainly heard them first time around quite a lot, so did the rest of us. And then were rediscovered in the 90s. With Henry it is not true. No one, saw it on the date listed in IMDb. It wasn't released at all. NPR did a story on the problems it had being released in 1989. So is a film connected to the date of its creation or its release. I'd say both. And it isn't until Henry gets released in 1990 that we start seeing films influenced by its unique extreme dark tone. I'd argue without out it no Silence of the Lambs, no Seven, etc. In other words it is a proto-90s film but released in the 90s. River's Edge is nowhere near as dark. And Angst was hardly seen at all at the time. (I saw fully conscious and into horror then no one really talked about it.) So I'd say Henry's release date can only be 1990. Unless you can find me one person who saw before then.
@TheAnadromist
@TheAnadromist Жыл бұрын
@@spookyastronauts Again its a question of whether a festival release counts, especially if it has no distribution. These days many more festivals mean that the process that used to be hidden is now seen by many more people. The purpose of festivals is not simply to give fans a chance to see films, but it is to give distributors a chance to buy films. Saint Maud is a 2021 film. Not a 2019 film. I'd say the distribution date is when a gets either a general release in one country or a television (or even KZfaq) release. But films shown in festivals don't really have any distribution. Wikipedia tends to have more information readily seen than IMDb. And tends to have a made date AND a general release date. But distribution is now one of the conundrums of our times. But IMDb is wrong on the dates of The Evil Dead and Henry, if people think they were in release at the earliest dates listed. It's exactly the same as Saint Maud. Apart from a few festival goers Saint Maud probably wasn't picked up for distribution when it was in festivals. Thus the later date is the date. What's the release date for James Bond: No Time To Die? It was finished near the beginning of the pandemic. Well IMDb does say 2021 not 2020. It should say the same for Henry and ED #1.

@@spookyastronauts Sure. I agree. As usual with Cronenberg this movie is difficult to classify. You can also see it as a drama. But there's elements of body horror in it, so it could be - simplisticly - described as a horror movie too

I'm on episode four, it's very different but equally the same, just in their relationship to each other!!. The anxiety is palpable!. The original messed me up, David Cronenberg is such an auteur, it never spoke 'thriller' to me, we all react differently to things but he is the master of 'body horror' and to this day when I rewatch it I am that tiny girl again!!. Jeremy Irons was superb and just thinking of the 'medical instruments' sends a visceral shudder through my body!!. Brilliant but horrifying film!...

I wanted to say The Texas Chainsaw Massacre but that's a highly exaggerated take. Although Henry was a top choice. And you read my mind with Snowtown; that one is still able to get under my skin. The Exorcism of Emily Rose was quite underwhelming for me, mainly because it was so hyped and the true story so horrific. I did like the courtroom scenes, though. I haven't seen Requiem but I do want to see how it approaches the story.

The movie that is way more fucked up in real life is Borderland. Adolfo de Jesús Constanzo was a cult leader who used his extreme religious/magical beliefs to create basically a cult of serial killers. The movie isn't great, but its even worse when you realize how diluted the story is from the real thing. He was providing magical rituals to drug lords for safe shipments. Its a fasinating and disgusting story.

Wasn't that some nutter in the 1930s or something, that went around, wearing a bag over his head and chopping people up with a scythe? They actually thought they caught the man behind the mask, about ten years or so after his rampage, but there's been debates over the years.

I've never seen The Devil's Rejects but your description of the true story reminds me of a board game that I love (sicko here 😂) called The Bloody Inn which is basically as you describe. Try to rob, kill, and bury as many of your visitors as you can while evading police. Yeah😅

Most of these films ar enot my cup of tea. Partly too disturbing, partly just don't like serial killer / true crime types. I did love The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Thank you for the video.
