More About "Bakemono":
Today is February 3rd, known in Japan as Sestubun. It was supposed to be a celebration of the beginning of spring. But this family’s mood has turned sour because rebellious daughter Ayumi is once again refusing to finish her dinner. So her mother tries to scare her straight with a story. If she doesn’t finish her food, she tells her, then an evil spirit will enter the house and eat it instead. Unfortunately, the story has the opposite effect of what Mom intended. Ayumi thinks, if the spirit is so hungry, why don’t we feed it? So later that night, she lays out a trail of food to lure the spirit in. And the plan works. Ayumi has a close encounter with a mysterious woman in the middle of the kitchen. The result of that meeting won’t be discovered until the next morning, when Mom and Dad come downstairs for breakfast and find a very hungry Ayumi waiting for them...

Sumire and Jorge, writer-directors of Bakemono, here! We’re thrilled to debut Bakemono on Alter and looking forward to answering any questions about the film! This short was a labor of love, inspired by Sumire’s childhood, that came together pretty quickly. But it then had a long road through festivals, before and during the pandemic. We’re so glad we can finally show it to the world!

I think the parents should've explained more as to why the hungry demons are evil. Ayumi meant well, she wanted to help because she felt bad. She wasn't taught what would happen if she tries to help evil spirits other than "bad things happen". Sometimes, a simple fear tactic won't work because she's just too kind to let the evil spirits to starve and perhaps started to look at things in a logical perspective.

It's kinda funny how so many different cultures can share similar lore. In Ireland, there's the belief during Samhain that you have to give offerings to the spirits of loved ones to ward them off. giving them food to make them go away or they'll come in and eat everything, and maybe your family. (may be wrong, been a while). but it's part of the origin of Halloweeen.

Dear parents from the movie, I have no idea how bakemonos work, but in european fables when a bad spirit or fairy takes the place of a kid, usually you have to enter their realm to find him or her. Here the entrance is usually under some big stone on a hill and typically you can hear weird music coming from it. Hope this helps, cheers

I am Japanese! Thank you for making a very nice movie. "Bakemono" that appears here has the same meaning as a monster, and is actually a goblin-like creature called "Oni". Oni is in everyone. Do you know what I honestly feel like right now? I feel like this is a note to parents...that when their kids are small and don't want to eat too much leave them be because they will grow and then you will wish that they would eat less. Speaking as a parent that used to worry that my son would only eat tiny bits at given intervals...but now same son is a teenager and usually first question is "what's for food?" when he comes in the door. I am in Canada but now I keep imagining he is going to start growling "motto". I think it's said Motto? Also, I love that she said "poor Bakamotto" when she finds out the parents never feed it. That would be me in one way and my sister in another...literally I have stories to back that up. Thanks for another great watch.

This film is wicked and entertaining We are presented with a Japanese tradition which creates a nice back drop for the story. It was also a nice bonus to hear the Japanese language. I thought there were some nice camer angle moments such as the tablecloth flip and the part where the glass was obscuring the face. The use of kids can be very creepy and this one did not disappoint. In the last shot you really get that sense of terrifying tragedy. Many Thanks to Sumire Takahashi and Jorge Lucas for solid film. Great job as I am going to learn more about Setsubun. oni, obake, and bakemono. Peace.

The Japanese culture is so beautiful and is full of their own superstitions...I love when culture directly involves something like this. Just like pumpkins on our porches are supposed to ward of evil spirits. Obviously this was a more intimate tale of the consequences of not following tradition. Those evil spirits being cased away may be made real by the thousands of years of just the strong belief in them and the story being passed down through the generations. I guess evil translates well through any language and culture. 👹

Feel bad for the little girl. She was just trying to be nice and make friends with the Bakemono. Also the poor parents, having their only daughter being eaten alive and replaced by the Bakemono that killed her 😟

Demon: *Possesses daughter* Also Demon: *Xovers mouth when burping* I mean, manners much. 😅👌 Edit: Also, if at all possible, I would love to see an alternate ending in which the little girl and the hunger spirit both waiting for the parents down stairs and asking for "More." After raiding the fridge from the night before.

This is definitely one of the best short horror films I've seen in a while. I love the incorporation of Japanese culture into the story. The story itself was very engaging and there were no dull moments. I also liked the combination of Japanese and English Language. The acting is very convincing and the actors all have great on-screen chemistry. Nice effects too 😱👍🏾
