Ireland-1879. Margaret and Tomas have just begun their lives together with their infant son Oisin, as the threat of a second famine looms heavy over the land.
Margaret is left isolated and alone with the inconsolable Oisin as Tomas sets off to sell his Poitín.
On his Journey Tomas gets a glimpse into the harrowing realities beyond their doorstep while Margaret’s mental state deteriorates at home.
Things are not what they seem when Tomas arrives back. The family must fight to overcome their fears and superstitions.

So everybody of lower or common status at that time in Ireland was starving. The woman herself is not getting enough nutrients to produce enough milk for the baby to eat. That's why you see blood oozing from her breast under her nightgown. On top of the starvation they faced she falls into a postpartum depression & she follows the old tale of if you had a baby that was ill you laid it out in the wood in a tree area known as a fairy hole & if the child dies by morning the "wee folk" meaning the fairies would come & take the baby back w/them & often times they'd say the fairies would leave another child in its place aka the changeling. A very interesting film indeed.

No sound is worse than a screaming baby! I made sure that I'll never have one, it would drive me crazy in no time. Parents are underrated, especially mothers. Motherhood is a real full-time JOB! Those who care for babies deserve medals, praise and MONEY! We all should respect carers more.

It's a blessing and a curse. I never wanted a kid. Then I got a lifelong friend pregnant. My daughter was sick a lot in her first 3 years. Lots of vomiting, lots of late night visits to the ER, lots of hospital stays. Lots of sleepless nights, but I would do it a billion times over, to have my daughter. She's nearly 10, and she is my world. You never really know how really to love yourself, until you have a child. You realize that not only are they a part of you, but they are the absolute best part of you. Screaming babies and sleepless nights are temporary. They grow. A parent's love and undying devotion to that child of theirs is eternal, and it also grows. Regardless, they will always be a part of you, and you them. It's amazing.

Thank you. Imagine how someone feels...having a 12yo child with severe nonverbal autism and ADHD. The mind of a toddler.....forever, with no support. Some days...😫 But for real thanks for acknowledging motherhood. 💕 💪🏽

@@jesuislecatfilmproductions3967 Isolation! Yes, absolutely. A very big factor in losing control of one’s mind. Isolation makes you question everything, especially your own sanity. My health issues after giving birth in 2019 caused every issue we have discussed. But isolation can be the most insidious because it often feels like I’m protecting myself and my child when I am actually becoming further undone. Again, I thank you all so much for drawing attention to these issues. Especially for women, it doesn’t matter if the piece is regarding a time period long ago, it’s all still far too relevant. thank you guys again. I will be back to watch over and over 🤟♥️

I searched for short horrors, and this one did not disappoint. Except there are no ghosts and ghouls involved, rather the horrors of the human mind reaching breaking point. It was deep and moving. Well done.

He was sharing food with another man, while his baby was screaming from hunger and the wife was going mad from starvation. A story about a man whose neglect and absence toward his wife and baby, caused him to lose everything in the end.

We certainly didn't shy away from the misogyny of the time. Plus the patriarchal institutions reject him throughout, his 'drinking friends' and the church. He gives too men and gets nothing in return. They are both let down by patriarchy. The starving man on his back is a reference to an Irish story. Teig O'Kane and the Corpse. It's a very sad and realistic story with a perfect mystical atmosphere. I mean, how many real life cases like this were in human history? Especially in those times when medicine was not able to diagnose the postpartum depression.

He chose to give food to other men, chose to lie and spend money on alcohol whilst his wife and child starved, chose to leave her alone to look after the baby whilst he was out drinking with the lads, consistently failed his family which resulted in the death of his child and his wife losing her sanity. Yet regardless of all of this, she would have been the one punished back in the day, burned alive as a witch. He would have been pitied, supported by his community, no blame would have been put on him. I wish I could say times have changed. Excellent film, well done guys.

My daughter got Covid, she’s 8 months. I threw up multiple times , due to anxiety , because I was so tired because I also had Covid. But I didn’t want to go to sleep. I felt guilty. I was scared she wouldn’t wake up and I wouldn’t know cuz I was asleep. I am diagnosed with PPD. The guilt is so toxic it tastes disgusting. I love her so much though and we both made it through.

WOW!! This was a very, very good representation of Post partum psychosis. It's very sad when left untreated. He just kept leaving her alone because he had to go and make money. Sad but happens even still way too often...

Yes though also do you remember his friend the priest who said something like, "I was thinking to myself that I'd like to get down to the dregs of this bottle today, and there's no face I'd rather see for it than yours"? This father worked, but I think the stress from this crying baby made him avoid coming home more than he should have. I don't think the night of him passing out drinking with friends was an isolated one, and it all left her alone too much at a time when she couldn't be left alone.

@@jaybat1184 the ‘baby’ was sculpted by an amazing artist named Robin McFarland at a company called D-signs and displays in County Tyrone. The eyes are my (Ryan/Thomas) eyes superimposed. "He has his fathers eyes" rosemary’s baby style.

I'm a mom of 3 and pregnant. I could be completely wrong but this cry sounds a lot like a hunger cry to me. I am only 10 minutes onto it though . I want so bad to take the baby and let momma have a break go for a walk get some fresh air momma I'll help you. Okay just finished it and a combination of lack of sleep food and help from her husband sent her crazy. I don't know if she killed the baby or if it starved to death but she was clearly crazy by the end.

It likely passed away when she dropped it on the ground, after getting spooked, no longer seeing her own child in the boney "thing". Based on her "bleeding breast" I also assume that she was unable to feed the child, which is also why the father brought a milk can into the house at the beginning. When he returned after getting food for them, the situation proofed to much for either to take. Trauma does a lot of horrible things to your mind.

As a new mother that just stopped breastfeeding this was extremely painful to watch. I just wanted to reach through the screen and feed that poor angle. Absolutely devastating story but such a beautiful piece of art you created. Your short film touched me deeper than any full length horror movie ive seen. Please never stop creating.

Yeah, honestly I'm not sure if he really was a changeling or if he was just starving. I bet starving babies look very strange, they're normally fat little potatoes (maybe a bad comparison for this film...)

I just looked up what starving babies look like (yay me) and jeez yeah, he might have just been starving. They look like sick monkeys and probably grow a lot of hair on their bodies randomly too, because the human body's response does that when it's cold, and starvation could lead to being cold.

Agreed. Part of the reason the film is set in the second Irish famine is to illustrate that the inherited truama of the Great Famine in the 1840s meant that when blight returned to Ireland in 1870s it led to mass immigration of Irish people to the USA further dwindling the population. The population in Ireland before 1840 was much higher than today even showing the impact that these living conditions had on the Irish people. That's why we, as a thriving nation should be open to those fleeing similar hardships.

Excellent dramatization of the despair and madness that poverty can bring into people's lives. We can all fall prey to the superstitions of 'tradition' and 'religion' when the world is falling apart around us; a desperation compelling us to make sense out of the chaos. The more covert attributes arising when their right-hand device, "The Media", ratchets up the Fear. Using 'false flag event' tactics, propaganda and emotional and Spiritual manipulation to drive people to the edge of insanity. Pointing fingers at those within their *own* close relationship circles. Paranoia, xenophobia, misogyny, racism and all the 'ISM-schisms surface - wielding their ugly heads. Until the masses of people can awaken from the Western (American) Dreaming and grow up to become Cosmic Citzens they will continue to be merely puppets whose strings can be pulled and buttons pushed at their command. -----------------

That was great! I love spooky films with a dark atmosphere and everything really fit here. The music and sound effects were full of menacing doom, the gloomy landscape and the huts full of shadows only added to that. The "shock moments" with bones and child were used sparingly and caused a pleasant feeling of discomfort when watching, as good horror should be. The two leads were so convincing, the father so lost and helpless, the mother between denial and madness that I wanted to jump into the movie and save them all. I shudder at the thought of the real background of the events. Gradually, your video went from horror film to tragedy. Thanks for the terrific short film.

Excellent. Really enjoyed that. All the hardships of living during that time alongside an uncaring church. The leading lady’s performance was disturbingly brilliant and the music was so dark. Superb.

This is almost the exact reverse of one of the biggest instances of a reported changeling abduction. In Ireland, the fear of the Faye folk was rampant. Any woman who spent too long in the woods or acted in a strange manner would be questioned as a possible changeling or enchanted by the Faye. In a well known instance, a husband noticed that his wife's personality changed after having a child. He then accused her of being enchanted and to have replaced their child with a changeling. The husband tested the child by holding it over a fire closely to see if it would change back to it's original form. The wife herself was tortured and set on fire by the husband. It's an old Irish tale of madness. The series LORE portrayed a live-action retelling of the story. It seems like the writer was looking to portray the mirror opposite in this film. Just my 2 cents.

Hi, Thanks for the comment! You are right, The story of Bridget Cleary was the original inspiration for the film (although they were a childless couple) During our research it was uncovered that the most common instances of Changeling related cases in the late 19th century were infanticide. A number of women institutionalized for the killing of what they believed to be Changelings. None of these cases gained as much notoriety as the Bridget Cleary story which shocked the world in its brutality. Only one story of a woman killing an adult man believed to be a Changeling came up. We wanted to represent these stories and perhaps shed light on the difficulties faced by women in 19th century Ireland, especially at times of famine. The fear of Starvation plays a huge role in the phycology of the time. Only 30 years after the Great Famine in Ireland we had the Gorta beag (mini Famine) the inherited truama combined with post partum psychosis saw a number of real cases similar to this occur in remote Ireland.

Back then with nothing more then a tiny house, miles away from other people, pennies a day to survive, loneliness, hunger, depression in many ways its a mental breakdown. How long was he gone for? people can't live alone or with someone in hard times. Eventually one will snap and the end will happen.

So I had to watch it twice. The first go-round I didnt quite understand what was going on but then I watched it again after reading some of the comments and thats when I was like wtf. This is really heartbreaking and knowing the baby was crying from hunger really made me tear up. I have a 9 month old and I honestly just kept looking at her and just being grateful for everything we have. Im still not sure if the baby died from starvation or if it was when the mom dropped him. Also, her husband wasnt sh!t I mean I guess he was "trying" but he wasnt around at all to the point u had no idea ur child was dead from starvation or that ur wife had bad PPD and would rather pass out all night with his friends from drinking. Total POS. Looking at this from a new mom/wife perspective this is true horror

He actually wasn’t a POS. The subtle hints show this was during the potato famine in Ireland, I think the husband is out looking for work which meant he was staying the night at a place with other husbands trying to feed their families. The drinking scene is just to show how scarce those resources were and how many men would travel out away from their suffering wives. A man could leave and come back to his whole family dead

It's about the Irish potato famine when men would have to find work and make money any way they knew how. This man was trying to sell poitin which was a high alcohol drink and as a part of the sale they would usually spend the night to show off the drink. The people like it, they buy more. It was very common for these transactions to take days, maybe weeks depending on travel. Poitin also had to be sold discretely as it was actually outlawed since there was no way for king Charles the third to tax it so usually it had to be quiet social gatherings. So really he chose one of the few options available to him where he could still see his family and make some money. No he was not a POS he just wanted to be able to see his family from time to time and did so in a way that was under his English oppressors noses and as a native Irish , these stories and lessons were taught to me from a very young age and I have learnt so much about who I should be from men and women from this time. This depicts my ancestors and their struggles and the fact you see this man as happless and lazy truly shows tge ignorance of today's people and the privilege we have has spoiled us, making us think we deserve more than we put in.

The poor baby crying from hunger devastated as I'm sure it did all mother's who watched it. And the man getting drunk while his family starved, what a waste. Didn't look like he had missed any meals.

How true & as art is interpretation so is all the genres of Horror . Loved the atmosphere here & in Europe there so many old places that lend themselves to the feel this film has it really makes it easy for these actors to play their roles with such conviction they drag you in to worlds we can only imagine just how strong emotions & myth & mystery can be in the human condition. Very well done all around & right off the bat it starts. One great thing about all these shorts is never take anything for granted & don't think you know the answer or outcome till the end .

This was really well made. Quite sad but an interesting dichotomy between the traditional Celtic beliefs and the Catholic Church. At some point in the film, they both seem obviously absurd. What does a man care about baptism and consecrated ground when he’s carrying his dead infant in his arms. Bravo!! This was a good one!

Thank you for the comment. Given the proliferation unmarked cillín (graveyards for unbaptised) in Ireland from the time we definitely wanted to point at the cold-heartedness of ingrained beliefs. To have the priest the only English speaker in the film further illustrating the new/outsider power structures in the country.

Transforming by starvation. The movie take his time in the great starvation during the potatoes crisis in Ireland. The mother, sure, got post-partum depression, and she though her true baby was replaced since he was only skin and bone and she can not recognize him anymore. She can not breastfeed him since she is in a starvation state too. Many Irish babies died from the great starvation. It took many family and many people.

Dang this was terrifying in every way...I was legit leaned over my keyboard, nose to the screen, and yet I wanted to look away. I haven't been this creeped out in so long! It has to be because it's just so incredibly real. The man throwing out the rotten potatoes, constantly drinking to try and numb out the pain because he knows he can't do anything to stop this from happening. The mother leaving the house to sit outside because she knows there's nothing she can do to save her baby. The baby screaming until it's dead, and then the mother falling into PPD psychosis to cope with the grief. There's no villain in this story, save for the plague that caused the starvation. I can only think of one word for it: Brutal. It's such a good example of horror, as horror is tragedy and disbelief and fear and this has all of those combined.

That’s why there’re ambulances for scream-babies todays. Parents receive in Germany f.e. a list of help adresses so that no desperate crime occurs. Not in these shown times. That desperation of the mother was very good acted. Just toneless, tired suffering. Well done!

The baby is hungry. But in the mother's eyes the upset baby is no longer her child but a Changeling. People in Ireland used to believe in the Fairies. Not like Tinkerbell or the English idea of the cute fairy but in a hidden world of 'others'. They were to be respected ( farmers still do not dare disturb a fairy fort for fear of bad luck) It was believed that a sick, inconsolable or disabled child was no longer the child but an older fairy who was swapped. This way a human could feed and look after the dying fairy in a young body. The Changeling would eat and eat... Changeling mythology was used as a way of explaining children with mental disabilities and deformation. Margaret grew up believing in this. So when her child is inconsolable she begins to loose her grip on reality and fall back on superstition. It is real to her. By the time she is confronted by Thomas it's too late. She sees a flash of something in him too.

My take on this is that this lady had PPP and starved her baby. Husband comes home from working away for a while to find the baby dead, and the woman is so out of it from the psychosis, she goes ahead and kills him too, thinking shes "saving" them. Very dramatic short.

This was set during the Irish potato famine. He was basically using all their money to feed himself and his friends as well as get drunk. He was starving his wife and she couldn’t produce milk so the baby starved to death.

Does anyone know why so many horror shorts are almost like silent films? As in, there is barely (if any) dialogue and instead mostly just music and sound effects? It's so common that I feel like I'm missing something cause I don't understand why.

A lot of media doesn’t trust the viewer to know what their watching or have the critical thinking to ascertain a meaning to it so you get dialog dumps. When you are alone and struggling through it are you talking to a non existent audience? The goal could be humor, horror, love or any of the grand nuanced feelings we have. Horror and fear is very personal and you see and hear what the subject sees and hears, you can inject yourself better not knowing their thoughts and assuming they are similar to yours

I´ve read from many short filmmakers, that almost mute movies helps them to reach a wider audience worldwide, since there wouldn't be the need for complicated translations. Having to caption just a few lines to other languages makes their films more accesible for anyone

He was a priest and in those times a child would not be buried in a concentrated cemetery without being baptised. Ireland is littered with burial grounds called cillín for criminals, unbaptised infants etc.

@@Scooterbeerrun it was a statement of sorts. That the Catholic Church did not intervene with aid in Ireland and seemed to take a hands off approach. Other denominations offered help in exchange for conversion in the great famine. Hence the term ‘taking the soup’

When I was a teenager my friends mother had PPD for two years, she ended up going in the woods and taking her life so she didn’t hurt her toddler. Even today women are suffering in silence. Sad world.

The film is based on the Irish mythology of the changeling. They used to believe that if a child/person was not themselves, or seemed different, that that person was ‘swapped’ for an older ‘fairy’ to be fed and looked after by the humans. This is something that actually happened and led to historical accounts of infanticide in Ireland.
