This story is fantastically iner-referential, which is one of the really magical things about the whole Cthulhu mythos, and the Lovecraft circle. All these authors, mostly known to each other by correspondence and mutual artistic support, almost crowd-sourcing (friend-sourcing? Colleague-sourcing? Acquaintance-sourcing?) a new type of fiction, straddling fiction and reality. What a wonderful rendition. Thank you very much, Ian!

A brilliant cooperation of Bloch with HPL! By shedding light on the mystery it became almost palpably real and yet ... more mysterious. Nyarlath... and nuclear energy? A wonderful rendering of this important triplet of stories, thank you.

Hi Amy, this one is the final part of a 'trilogy', beginning with Bloch's The Shambler from the Stars, followed by Lovecraft's The Haunter of the Dark. Here are the links to listen to the other two parts in order: Shambler: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zrdmq6Rhy5-3fp8.html Haunter: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qdd5ZqWkls2vYIk.html I think you've listened to them before, but perhaps listening in the order above, might add fresh perspective. Here, however, is another tale that I feel you might enjoy: Satampra Zeiros: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hchkjKtpm7SunHk.html Thanks again, Amy! Ian

Great reading Ian, as always :) - Have to say though that personally im not 100% on board with the direction Block takes with this sequel; conflating the haunter with Nyarlethotep frankly irritates me :) i find it to convenient, that it reduces the breadth and scope of the Mythos in an unnecessary way, and even worse it seeks to bring a degree of logic and consistency that HPL always IMHO sought to avoid, by which i mean he largely left things vague by design, with many questions unanswered - here is where much of the fascination with Lovecrafts work abides - in the fact that its left to the reader to pontificate, and to imagine what lies beyond whats on the page... for me i choose to see the haunter as separate and unique, an inexplicable entity.... but i guess Block is more qualified than I to have his say - lol - anyway great reading! :)

The Older Ones, the Outer Ones, don't need Dunwich half-breeds, brooding Cthulhus or deathless fish-monsters to destroy mankind. They just need to tell us about nuclear bombs. We do the rest. Of the stories in Bloch’s Cthulhu Mythos “trilogy”, this has to be the weakest. Overlong and derivative-and I know he’s still writing (very willingly) here in Lovecraft’s shadow, but it really does just read like a parody of Lovecraft, even if he does include some crime/mystery elements in which he would later find great success. Don’t get me wrong: I like Bloch, and I’d like much more Bloch, but this just doesn’t work for me.
