I am one of the folks who helped care for Zippy at Old Friends at Cabin Creek. This is the first time that I am watching this video--I was too upset when it was first released to watch it. The video came out beautifully--everyone involved with its production treated Zippy's story with such dignity. I am also heartened by all the comments I see here. Zippy was very, very well cared for--he got lots of love, admiration, and peppermints (that's me giving him that last peppermint at the end of the video). We were--and still are--all so proud of him. Thank you all for your kindness.

Zippy was very wise and fortunate. To get through all those races without injury, AND have an owner that loved him no matter the race result, AND a retirement home AND fan club?! Many race horses die in this sport, or disposed for slaughter when they are injured or can no longer perform. He was in fact the ultimate winner. Good you Zippy, RIP.

No registered thoroughbred is sent to the slaughter. Anyone who has a thoroughbred knows that they will never work or be part of horse racing again if they do that. Every thoroughbred is traced from birth…actually, from conception. Whatever price you get at the slaughter house will never be enough to forever lose the right to raise, train, handle, breed, or have anything to do with the industry…further they would be banned from all race tracks…so not even a job of mucking a stall would be available.

Zippy Chippy had the ability to run well, as evidenced by his lifetime record of finishing second 8 times and third 12 times, earning $30,834 lifetime. Some days Zippy ran really well. We thought he was going to win one day and only lost by a head, about 10 inches. Zippy always ran, just not always fast. He often ran more like a kid on his way to school with an unfinished homework assignment due. Zippy finished all of his races, although he was eased in one because it was clear that he wasn't going to try that day. Zippy retired from racing with no lameness issues.

So glad it is posted here. I lost my 27-year-old Arabian Rocky (raised him from a baby) 6 months ago, and when I saw this story, the water works still won't stop. We fortunately have plenty of land and our neighbor (the angel!) came over with his bobcat and we found a perfect spot for him. I miss him every day and my other Arabian Millie still looks for him. This is a wonderful story and especially for folks like me who have had the privilege of living with horses for a lifetime. Many thanks to all the good people at CBS for sharing this wonderful story.

Some horses do like to race and will race each other in the pasture, but I do have to say I don't agree with the race horses practice, they are ran way to often and far to young and as a result they suffer serious injuries and arthritis. The Kentucky Derby for example is only for 2 year old horses a horse's knees are not fully formed until the age of two and sometimes later it is physically unsafe to ride them causing arthritis and joint damage but these horses are already trying to carry a person by the time they get to the derby. And I've seen many races where they run horses in far less than ideal conditions for example if it has been raining and the track is too soft the horse's feet will sink and they can severely damage their ankles and knees
@mickeymortimer4407
@mickeymortimer4407 2 жыл бұрын
@@reneeburtness1526 yeah, they love racing in the paddock and on the track to a certain extent, as well. I know this from experience (my background is in stockhorses, rodeo but I also briefly worked for a top racing trainer). My point is that this horse who ran last on a lot of occasions had a good life. Running last all the time wasn't something that caused him to have a low self-esteem for instance!!!

I learned a long time ago as a kid that winning is not everything. You do your best and give it all you got and if you have the support of friends and family your a winner no matter what its the people and the friends you meet from those events and you take with you. Zippy realized that you make each day count and you enjoy everyone of those days to the fullest. He won't be forgotten in my heart as long as I live and I'm happy to see how many people he touched and now he will be immortal. God bless your soul Zippy Chippy may he run free in the endless fields of green forever.

Too many times the racing industry has been really horrid with how they treat their horses. But Zippy seems like he was one of the luckier ones. He seemed like his spirit was intact. He seemed mostly happy at his home. His owner seemed to care about him as well, which is very rare, cuz many of the owners I've seen don't even really care if their horse dies on the track, they just butcher 'em and replace 'em, whilst collecting the insurance money. I'm glad there were people who cared about Zippy.

In every horse-related sport are very loving ppl and very very bad ones :)
@echotrash466
@echotrash466 2 жыл бұрын
@@johanna7096 Well, yes, but in the racing industry, there's mostly bad. Most times if the horse doesn't perform well, they get shipped over into other countries, like Mexico, where they go to get slaughtered (if they're lucky, they get a forever home with other people). A lot of the time the horses are also ran extremely young, so young that their bones aren't formed and solid yet. You'll find many horses that loose a leg and have to be put down on site. Thousands of horses have died in this industry, more than any other horse sport. It is one of the worst ones out there. This also includes, Big Lick, it's a really bad one as well, it should be outlawed. Saddle-seat is also pretty similar to Big Lick, but with different/similar manor of getting the exaggerated gait and high flying tails. I wish there were more people who cared about their horses, I want the horses to live their best lives with their human/horse family. Zippy is one of the lucky ones. His family didn't care if he won or not from what it looked like in the video.

Horse lover here. Been riding since the age of 3, now 21 years old. I have never, ever been able to understand or like the idea of horse racing or it's entire industry. I find it a very horrible sport, that kills a ton of horses every year... I've never heard of Zippy, but I love how people still looked up to him even when he lost every single race. That's what you call being a true horse lover, you still love them even when they don't win, even if they're "more of a let down" because they're born into very very high racing bloodline with a lot of expectation. Even I know who Nothern Dancer was so I was really intrigued from there on then in the video about Zippy. So glad he finally got the recognition every trying race horse deserves.
