I'm talking about what natural horsemanship is, not just the trailer loading part. With natural horsemanship, there is a positive reinforcement, which is the release of pressure.

Sorry for all the people who are so critical. I think the general concepts of this video are spot on. Make the right thing to do the easy thing to do and most horses will take that route willingly. I also think rewarding the slightest try and then slowly asking for more is a great training strategy with horses. Also letting her back out on her own until she is comfortable. I think this is a great demonstration of natural horsemanship. For anyone criticizing this as "cruel" or describing the stick and string as a "whip" need to actually learn something about horses before commenting on random youtube videos. The simple base of almost any horse training is "pressure is the motivating factor and Release is the reward factor." Anyone who doesn't understand that clearly knows nothing about horses.

Thanks for the video, just spent a few hours introducing our yearling and reintroducing my 15 year old gelding to the trailer. Gelding was good, yearling not skin thrilled. More ground work with the lunge whip. And for all the critics , it's a tool. Like the one you should have had as a kid 😊

He is using the whip in the same manner as he would the end of the rope. He never struck the horse, and instead used it as a tool to guide and push the horse in the desired direction.

Sorry you see it that way. I let the horse stay in the trailer as a release of pressure. Right after I thanked the crowd for watching I gently backed her out and returned her to a very thankful owner. What you missed is that the horse willingly entered the trailer and stayed in it without me shutting the door. She had the choice to stay outside and work or go inside to rest. She chose rest.

The whip is only an extention of the arm. Sometimes you can't put yourself right next to the horse just in case he reacts.

Which "word for word" are you referring to? Yes, Pat Parelli is my main mentor. I've also studied everything available by Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt in addition to the top clinicians out there. They ALL use approach and retreat and reward the slightest try. They all do as much as necessary but as little as possible. That's not a whip. It is a parelli carrot stick, or something very close to it that is used as an extension of the body. He does not use it to hurt the horse in any way, it's used as an indicator and can be necessary since horses are so much larger than us. This is pretty dang good natural horsemanship, all things considering.

Larry, Thank you for the support. Unfortunately there are those who choose to stay ignorant by not listening to experienced horsemen/horsewomen. I chose to listen to the likes of horsemen like Bill & Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt, Buck Brannaman, Chris Cox, Pat Parelli, Ken McKnabb, Clinton Anderson, Denis Reis, Carson James, Dr Miller, and several others all of which I studies extensively. I've done my homework, spent the money, traveled, and put in the sweat equity to be able to say that I know that I know that what I'm doing is good for horses and humans.

This is good. I am having issues with my young OTTB. Nice to know I was on the right track (even if he didn't get in). Next time, I'll know a few other methods to try and continue to be patient!

Some people GET IT and some people don't. I know that what I'm doing is humane and gentle. Horses I train this way continue to like the trailer for the rest of their life. It works., I've trained hundreds of horses this way.

The "natural" refers to tapping into the horse's instincts to facilitate turning my idea into the horse's idea. Using food to "reward" rather than to "bribe" works with food driven horses. In this case I use comfort and safety as reward. Through experience I have found that all horses want comfort and safety which happen with the release of pressure. I reward the slightest try which causes the horse to become lighter until minimal pressure attains the desired results. This all translates to the requirement of lighter cues under saddle. I'm not smart enough have invented any of this. I have learned it from clinicians such as Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt, Buck Brannaman, Pat Parelli, Chris Cox, Craig Cameron, Denis Reis, and others. I suggest you look up some of these clinicians to learn more about horse psychology.

The "natural" state of a horse or any other animal is in the wild untouched by humans. The word "natural" in Natural Horsemanship means that the human taps into the horse's "natural" instincts to create an environment where through mutual respect the human's idea becomes the horse's idea. Kari Jennings, It's not a whip. It's a stick with a string that is used to help the horse move forward through rhythmic pressure. Mostly the string goes behind the horse. When it touches the horse occasionally it's about as hard as hitting you with a sock. If you've ever spent any time observing a herd of horses you will see interaction that is MUCH more violent than anything I do. Please, learn about horse behavior before commenting in a professional horse trainer's site.

Blogger Dogger, What I'm doing is rhythmic pressure with a string. It's probably as violent as hitting you with a sock.. When you spend 20 years training horses get back to me about how YOU do it.

Erin Smith, Before you call me "stupid", please, tell me about your experience with horses. Apparently you are an expert with extensive training in horsemanship in order to evaluate (in a vulgar manner) my trailer loading technique. Please, refer me to YOUR video of YOUR technique.

I watched this gentleman load two wild horses today. They wouldn't let you touch them when he got there. He used this technique, among others, to gain their trust and let them know he wasn't going to hurt them. It was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. He spent over an hour with one of them and even after he got her loaded he unloaded her to let her see it wasn't a prison and she could come out and then he loaded her again. I had tears of joy watching his patience and love with these animals. So very happy to have met him!

hmm I question the natural bit though can you explain that. I've been working on trailer loading with my horse and basically he goes in for food on his own accord till he realises it's a great place to be lol

It basically is using body language. All he's using it as, is an extenstion of his arm. He did not "whip" the horse with it.

My guess is, AnyOne who is critical of this simple little film has taught a couple of horses to load, watched a couple of Parelli films and now deem themselves experts... I can tell by this guys demeanor he has handled Hundreds of Horses... When you get 3-400 under your belt, Then add your critique, otherwise watch and learn something about demeanor (oops, body language)..

1) the "horseherd" never told him to get in the trailer, ergo, not "natural". 2) Science has now proven Positive reinforcement (R+) to be more effective & predictable results than negative reinforcement(R-) and 3) If you tell yourself your own story long enough, eventually you believe it. Try checking out "On Target Training" Shawna Karrish, who worked at Seaworld and now works with top level horses, and studied under John and Beezie Madden:)

natural ? there is no way you can load your horse natural. if we want to keep it natural we only can look at it

trailer loading natural there is no narual way to load a horse cuz they dont have trailes in the wild.. any way toload is stressfull on a horse

Yeah this is not natural, he's making the horse uncomfortable and nervous. He could of done this without a whip.

there is no such thing as "naturally" getting a horse into a trailer. It is an enclosed box. horses are NATURALLY claustrophobic, they belong in open spaces where they can run around. Now I'm not against floating, or what you did even, but please don't call it natural

I just hate the way he leaves the mare after she is in ... seems to say "I ve packed the horse, I did my job, now applause and congratulate me I am the best". I don't really see respect of the horse state of mind, I don't see a man carring about horses, I see a showman and that's why I cannot like this video. Nothing naturel, giving no choice to the horse ...
