Cranbourne Carnage: More dramatic falls in Victorian jumps racing

VIDEO: Following on from the death of Show Dancer on Wednesday, there has been further carnage on Victorian race tracks, this time at Cranbourne.
Out of 8 trial races, 4 horses fell (2 of them in the same race at the same jump!)
This just defeats any industry claims about improvements in safety of jumps racing. A cruel and dangerous sport like jumps racing will never be safe, definitely not for the horses!
TAKE ACTION: You can speak out against jumps racing cruelty by contacting your local Member of Parliament and demanding that they end this cruelty. There is no better time than in an election year.

I didn't know that! The only horse race i have ever attended is the blockhouse steeple chase in tryon, NC. Its just a thing people go to to tailgate and dress nice. They don't even watch the race. And I knew a few of the jockeys! so-and-sos mom. That kind of thing. I work in dog sled racing now. Its CRUEL AF. I really get now how something can be so cruel, but people not really knowing or understanding what they are seeing. Normalized animal cruelty. Whether the people doing it realize its cruel or not. I think thats largely what is happening in dog sled racing. People just don't see the wrong it it. I think its because they are just doing it the way they were taught, the way its always been done, these people probably got INTO horses from working in a stable that kept racing horses. So they get indoctrinated into THAT particular disciplines culture. And its not like most of these people are EVIL or anything. More ignorant i guess.... Im trying to get dog sled racing banned though. Theres really no way to regulate it and theres ALOT of messed up stuff that happens behind the scenes. Its not illegal to treat these dogs like shit. Sled dogs are considered livestock. You can run the piss out of them and it not be animal abuse. But back home in SC id go to jail for it.

doggo doggo yeah, we need to end dog sled racing, and horse racing period. Jockeys drug up horses (these horses are only 2 years old) so they can’t feel the pain of their ligaments tearing, muscles straining, and breaking bones. They also beat their horses during the race, and if they don’t win, the will most likely go to the slaughterhouse and be turned into cat food. People suck.

@@chrishale1345 Sled dogs poop blood from gastric ulcers and lesions. Its SUPER COMMON. They HAVE died from it. But mushers give them over the counter PPRIs during racing to prevent that. That is what the ISDVMA recommends. If you didn't, more of them would shit blood to death. But if you do, they can run even faster and farther and NOT die! Yay! lol those are the "leaps and bounds" in veterinary medicine people talk about when defending the race. SMH. There are vets that still declaw cats(most of them are OLD), just because there are vets at the iditarod does not make it humane. There is room for ethical debate in the veterinary field. The serious mushers all have what they call "yearling" or "puppy" teams. Old leader in front of young dogs. Usually run by a helper. Some mushers have an A,B, and a puppy team. SEVERAL hundred dogs living on chains. Mushers are always trying to get rid of slow dogs and bring in faster ones. "your only as fast as your slowest dog." They get traded around like Pokémon. Ive had as many sled dogs leave this SMALL 30 dog kennel i work for as have been here the entire time as me. They come and go like crazy. I don't know where all theses sled dogs end up. But I don't see many old ones. And there is alot of anecdotal evidence that says they aren't finding homes when they retire. Like the 2010 whistler massacre. And some mushers DONT adopt out dogs but breed 30-50 a year so.....idk. It doesnt really add up. I have a PDF that is from the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture. A government guide on sled dog care. Theres a page that illustrates how to properly shoot a dog between the eyes. Its the page right after the one that illustrates how to properly chain them to a post.

Going over small hurdles at speed like that is a killer because the fence isn't big enough for horses to have to slow down on approach so a lot essentially go through it which breaks their stride and rhythm enough to just clip the fence and if they're at full gallop will send them tumbling them arse over tit.

@lunamagicath1658
@lunamagicath1658 3 жыл бұрын
Mick Busby but it’s not as common a horse getting euthanised in that sport as this one. One of the horses disappeared after this exact trail without a trace. Eventing there are a lot of safety precautions and if it’s a rotational they have vets going round and shut down the comp. The vets took their damn time getting there and even then the horses were still going round. There was a rotational and the jockey was clearly concussed of some sort and the horse had leapt up and was off galloping. The jockeys don’t get treated right and the horses don’t. It depends on what country you are and who it is. Some care. But when it hits a certain point it’s about the money and winning and if a horse doesn’t make the cut it gets cut and not sold. I could find a ex eventer that William fox Pitt had but not a ex racer that one of the higher ups had. (Don’t know racing names). Jockeys get dropped when they gain an extra pound and lose their job for not being light enough. It’s literally equine ballet. Dressage should get banned as people are still allowed to practise rollkur at home in training and it’s a requirement to use a double bridle at international 4*. Showjumping because again some top level riders don’t care about the horse and just pull their faces off. But at the sight of blood they get pulled and a year ban. Racing there are no restrictions unless you make a racing referendum or something

Over 1000 horses die on a racetrack a year, horses hearts can burst from running to hard, they can be traumatized. Since everyone’s so tightly packed together one horse falling in the front means everyone could go down in the back. Sure, galloping a little with friends isn’t bad, but that’s because you’re not pushing your horse to extreme lengths, you’re just letting them run as fast as they wanna. Racing is just as bad as steeplechase- some horses may love to run, but they shouldn’t be forced push themselves to where their heart literally bursts. Watch this- m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p8-XlpN7prjalXU.html

Not all the time. Walking the horse can stop stiffness. It’s not obviously broken and when an eventing horse gets an injury like that they walk it off. It’s common to stop the muscles seizing as they go from speed to standing still. They probably care portable X-rays as well (I hope). The vets know what to do. They just take to long. Same with the doctor. The rotational jockey was dazed and limping. Wouldn’t be surprised if he was concussed and had a neck injury.

+Astrid Mistlord Same risk as normal when riding a race horse over a jump, not just in a race. Actually the bigger it is the better in racing. Because if the fence is bigger they will go slower, resulting in the horse measuring the fence more,also the horse has more time to get its landing gear (legs) down safely. So if you want to make racing better we need to increase the size of the jumps to what they use to be. Because otherwise If the fences are smaller there is more speed so more force hitting the ground or fence if it makes a mistake, so more chance of it breaking a leg etc. So no racing people shouldn't get involved in matters that they don't know about because they can't use their brain properly.
@WinterSoul108
@WinterSoul108 8 жыл бұрын
You have mistaken me. I don't want to improve races. I want to stop them. You know that some race horses that have been injured are deemed useless and killed. Even if they can heal well. As for bigger jumps, that doesn't always work. The horse can spook at the last minute or refuse to jump over. Causing injuries to the riders as well. No matter what, any horse racing is dangerous. And if a horse makes a mistake on a bigger jump, it'll just be injured worse.
@clarka1969
@clarka1969 8 жыл бұрын
+Astrid Mistlord for a start it won't be injured worse over a bigger jump. but then if you want to stop racing them your stopping something that treats horses better than riding school ponies. as a normal riding school horse gets hit by the whip 4 times a day then a racehorse is only raced about once every 3 weeks so therefore is whipped a lot less. racehorses are better cared for than normal horses. racehorses are feed better. racehorses contribute to the economy more than other equestrian disciplines. So why would we stop racing?

@@retro2546 hey just saw your comment and decided I would correct u. I myself am an eventer and I can tell u that thro my 16 years of eventing I have only seen 2 abusive owners. First I am not really sure why your think sj has alot of abuse in it. In racing (not all jockeys) jockeys smack their horses over and over again, drugging them up, use hobbles and in SOME places people will slaughter their horse when they r no use to them. THIS DOES NOT GO TO ALL JOCKEYS! Also as just equine said around 24 horse die every week on the race tracks and that is only some race track as u have some that don't record deaths. Now in sj and XC alone only around 20 horses (this is an estimate) die every year. As u can see this is a big difference. Second in sj whip aren't use as many time in racing same goes with XC. I understand why u may think XC may have alot of abuse in it because of the whips and the constant training and all the falls but its VERY VERY RARE to ever see or hear of any someone using drugs or hear of any deaths in XC or Sj. In every discipline even if it is just hacking out, there is always going to be a few people who sadly abuse their horses, but the racing industry has just abit more abuse in it then XC and SJ. 🙂
@retro2546
@retro2546 3 жыл бұрын
@@horseandrider3445 Actually before races vets test the horses and riders for drugs. SJ can be abusive. They can be drugged too. But the point is the pressure on the legs. Nothing good. Imagine 500-600 kg landing from over 140cm (at XC a bit lower) at the speed of around 30-40km/h. (XC is around 40-50km/h) And actually jockeys have limited amounts of whipping their horse. I guess its around 4 times, after 4 times you can only swoosh it. They make more sound than normal whip so thats why. Well, XC and SJ can just not record deaths too :) Anyway XC in my opinion is a lot more deadly, because the obstacles are fully stable so they do not just fall if horse fails the jump, which means horse trips and falls. I see a bit of hypocrite here. You say some of the deaths on race tracks arent recorded, then you say "its very very rare to ever see or hear of any someone using drugs or hear in any deaths in XC". And i will answer how you answered to me... Some of the drugging and deaths arent recorded! :D

It's not, deaths are the exception and there's less every year. These horses are livestock, not pets, and *still* get the top diets, top healthcare, and quality of life becase they're out running in packs and getting affection for it. It's a way better life than any pet horse on a farm.
@thememecrib109
@thememecrib109 3 жыл бұрын
@Saman Naqvi all horses are kept in stalls, so they dont roam around and break their legs. If they have stomach ulcers and health issues, they can't race and can't make money. Therefore trainers spend a fortune on food, health care and conditioning training to ensure that specifically doesn't happen. Horses race once a month at the very most, they're not exhausted. If they are exhausted, they WONT WIN and again, that defeats the POINT of owning a race horse. And is it safe for them to jump hurdles? No. But it's no less risky than a horse running in general due to the extreme fragility of their legs. If anything, jump horses are specifically trained to avoid that danger, whereas a regular horse is not trained to avoid rocks and slippery mud when out on a walk. Also, watch some jump racing, after 1000 races you'll be able to count on one hand how many horses actually got severely injured. Its not a common issue like you think it is. And race horses are livestock. Compared to other livestock, like dairy cows and chickens reared for meat, they live very, very good lives. Winning races is the priority for any race horse, therefore their quality of life is at the top of a trainers and investors mind. You think an abused horse will win a race? Abused horses rarely even get into the starting gates without attacking handlers or protesting and running in the opposite direction, you can watch any low level daytime horse race to see this happen. Its simple business to ensure a race horse is at peak physical and mental condition so it wins and makes money, and that's a fact.
@thememecrib109
@thememecrib109 3 жыл бұрын
@Saman Naqvi Two to 4, maybe 5 is generally prime age for a race horse, any older and they're at more risk of shattering a leg or not being fit enough. And i've said, they're trained specifically not to wipe out, if a horse gets hurt no one wins. Do you honestly think people invest all that time and money into a horse for it to get injured and ruin it's career? Of course not, that makes no sense.

They won’t be mercilessly whipped, the chances of a fatal injury are more than cut in half, they won’t have to run on a bad leg (as so many racehorses are forced and put on pain killers to do). If they love to run, they can do so on their own time. I fail to see how them being bred for this makes forcing them into life-threatening positions okay. What if you were born into a family of army veterans? Would you be perfectly okay if they forced you to join the army against your will? Would you be okay with forcing your own children to join as well?

Do you not see the jockeys standing there over the horses most of them in tears watching the animals that they have trained and worked with for most of these horses lives dying on the ground. Why do you have to be so selfish to just think about the horse when it impacts not only the animal but it’s surrounding people that have care for its entire life yes they’re a bad sides to racing but yes they’re a bad size to other equestrian sports don’t always focus on the Bad things there were plenty of good to. We care more about the horses because they never got a choice in the matter. The jockeys choose to ride them. The owner chose to breed/buy them. They all agreed to race. Well…all except the horses, which coincidentally happen to be the ones most likely to die/get injured. Every week, an average of 24 horses die on a racetrack. That’s not including the ones that don’t even make it to the track, nor the ones that die or have to be put down prematurely due to chronic issues they got from racing. Meanwhile, 100 jockeys have died. That is a big number, but it oversees the time since 1950. That’s 72 _years._ Now, I’ve never been good at math, so I could be way off base. And of course, the number of horse deaths is different each year. But if my calculations are even just a little accurate, we’re looking at about 64,000 horse deaths for every jockey that died. Remember, the jockeys not only choose to race, they also get paid for it. Now tell me who got the short stick in this situation?

@@lumini3172 I don't believe your numbers are accurate for horses per jockey. 6.4 million horses died since 1950 in racing accidents? Horse racing is a dying thing because casino gambling is allowed every now (just about). But there are a few things worth saying to put some things in perspective: - Horses race about 7 times a year, less if they're better - Horses can't race until they are 2, and generally are done by the time they are 6 (longer if they're competitive). On average, it's 3 years (they live 25-28 years on average) - Horses get paid to win and then sire (or dame). They're treated as investments, not as consumables by their owners. If they're injured, they won't win, and won't run. - There are some theraputic drugs like fusenomide and lasix (which I'm not sure they use any more), not to be confused with drugs which might be used to moderate pain. Using it to mask an injury is I think against the rules. - Horses are not like other four-footed animals. They're heavier relative to their leg size and higher up, so a leg injury is a much bigger problem for them. If they lay down for too long, they can get intestinal occlusions. Loss of a leg will quickly cause the other legs to fail. - The investment for a horse is expensive. They require lots of space (even if you don't race them). The garage at my parent's house used to be a coach house 100 years ago. My grandfather was a farrier (WW I trained him to be an electrician). Most horses are not race horses.
