Had a very similar experience, when I went to ask my rescued mare to canter from her trot she crow hopped for several steps before I got her to stop. I just had her stand still for several moments and when I felt her relaxed, I asked her to turn right, then left, then go forward, she came out of it, but I realized she how insecure and not ready she was for enjoying a ride. I’m working with her on the ground and getting her used to me being on her, above her, all over her and she can relax and be praised.

Mother’s Day. It was overcast. I was riding with a couple who had dressage trained quarter horses. We needed to cosa a major highway, Pacific Coast Highway (101) and traffic was heavy. In the middle of the highway, my horse decided to buck. I had been having problems with him all morning. He was afraid of going around a narrow path with a steep drop beside it, and the couple put me between their horses and literally forced mine around the path. Mid highway I told them to go on, that I’d be fine. As soon as they turned away, my brain kicked in, and I turned his head into his rear end. We circled twice, and he became an angel. I had been so intimidated by the talented couple that I had forgotten there were steps I could take to remind my horse to listen to me! I still cringe remembering how stupidly I behaved.

Interesting as always. One of the things I noticed years ago was that along with the raising of the back, there would be kind of a stillness about my pony when she got ready to freak out. Hard to explain, because she didn't always stop walking/trotting, just an odd feeling. I would always just get her to go in a couple of circles until she settled herself. Thanks as always for sharing this with us, always fun to see pretty Blossom girl!

Hi Brandi, so glad you’re back, really missed you in my feed. I have an Icelandic horse here in training, a beautiful fairy tale horse but so afraid, reactive and ready to get off. Lateral flexing is the thing that made him less fearful and less ready to run, I have some really colorful bruises from the first time working with him, but now 14 days later he’s trusting me and we make progress to become a riding horse. I does everything in really small steps to see that he’ s comfortable with everything. I have discovered that he’s afraid of the lead rope and mostly on his left side. He is an import, was a stallion in the wild for four years, got caught and was gelded, put on a plane to Sweden and that was all of his interactions with people. So, he’s wild basically. But we’re getting there, had a saddle on him for the first time two days ago. What I wanted to say is that I do like or you if the horse is hesitant, upset and reactive, I walk in front of the horse, do a little groundwork and walk until I feel that stress and anxiety is not the primary feelings. I also walk with the hose but were the saddle is and see that the horse is ok walking “first”. I believe that is the biggest reason to anxiety, that the horse feels unsure taking the lead. Live from Sweden!

Well done young lady, that is the difference between an amateur and a professional. Constantly being aware of your horses’ attitude and thus ready to deal appropriately with a potentially hazardous situation. Sadly, this is one of the hardest things to teach to people. Because it is extremely easy to get caught up in the moment and let your situational awareness slip. Doing so can easily become very hazardous for both horse and rider. Excellent information and well-articulated. And with that, you have a topic suggestion for the live stream. Situational awareness around horses on the ground or on their back. Be safe and well

Thank you Brandi 👍 very courageous and luckily controlling the situation. Many years ago, I was riding alone on a quiet small road when the horse made several attempts to return to the stable. I knew something bad could happen. I could feel in his attitude and in his body that he wanted to rush back home. And he eventually did, throwing me out. I found myself on the ground, feeling a hoof on my back while he did return galloping to the stable. Unhurt but shaking and so scared ! Never again I rode alone. I just wasn't able to control the horse. Luckily I had a thick jacket which saved my back from the hoof.

My thoroughbred will rear up and then go to bucking. If I am quick enough I bump her elbows with my stirrups. If I am late my left hand with the reins grabs my nightlatch, my right hand is on my Cheyenne roll and I just weather the storm. Most of the time there is plenty of warning that she is going to get lost so I keep her feet busy.

I did have a time when I was working with training this one horse that was close to this situation. I was riding him fine in the barn, but decided to take him out to the round pin for more room to work him. I was able to get on, but before both feet were in the stirrups he started to move. Now normally I don't have to put much force on the bit to stop him, but he wasn't responding. I kept putting more force until it got to the point I was worrying about hurting him. That was when I started to feel a shift in how fast he was moving so I did the only thing I knew at the time and slid off. That was when he started to run and buck. Now I was still in high school and don't have any professional training in how to train, I just with really well with horses. I did let him run a bit to get it out of his system, then once he was calmed down I checked the saddle to make sure something wasn't bothering him with it and got back on. He was good after that thankfully

The only animal that's ever tried to buck me off was a Tennessee Walking Mule. It was about 102F outside and he felt it was time to return to the barn. I disagreed and kept turning him back to face the direction I wanted to go. All of a sudden, dead stop, ears back, back comes up just a bit. You could see the cogs inside his head turning. I knew he was going to buck. I remembered what my Wyoming cowboy granddad taught me - heels down, keep his head up. That's what I did. He did a couple of ineffectual little hops and decided there wasn't any sense in pursuing this in the heat. He sighed, turned himself in the direction I wanted to go, and started resolutely walking forward. His owner was laughing her head off. That mule was smart enough to know when it wasn't worth the effort.

Oh my God I totally get where you’re coming from with the mini buc before the big one.My mirror pulled this exact same stunt and I ended up going off her back for the second time and I ended up chasing her all over the round pen and then I made her walk in both leads at least a couple of times after I got done . All I did was pull her to a stop in preparation to dismount and end our training session when she took it upon herself to do the big one in terms of bucking and I completely went off her back with no ability to recover my seat.

Winded but otherwise ok. 🤔🤔 Maybe its a case of where there's no sense there's no feeling.🤣🤣

I have been thrown twice by my daughter's horse that I get as a3year old rescue. She came from a hoarder case, never been haltered except for the Coggins test, but not trained to lead and was in foal. Very skinny and extremely head and ear shy. We saw the owners boyfriend walking by horses and slapping them in the head while I was helping to halter horses so they could be Coggins tested for the rescue. She had horrible scars on her face, down her right side behind her shoulder where she had been attacked by a cougar as a newborn foal. I think she has flashbacks from the cougar attack because if something comes fast and silently, diagonally towards her neck area, she really freaks out. I have done a lot of desensitizing with pool noodles and bouncing balls off her sides, which she is okay with. When I rode her the first time, she was fine, but the second time, the stirrup leather broke and it freaked her out when I fell. Then when I went to get in her again, she started bucking before I was on and it was fast this horse could really be a bronco. Then I had a trainer ride her and she was perfect for him. I got on and was walking her around, I felt her tense up and before I responded, she was up in the air and it was too late to get her under control. I have now learned to get her head around as soon as I feel any tension. I have had an experience of bucking as I was getting on twice, where I worked her and did the supplying exercises and I managed to get on her. I had her walk around, but when I went to turn her, she tensed up, I pulled her nose to the side and she hopped around in a circle for a while with me praying for her to stop before I had a vertigo attack. When she did stop, I flexed her back and forth, then I had walk a few steps, stopped her, praised her and got off. I checked her mouth and I saw a point on her tooth and saw that she had some abrasions on the inside of her cheek. When she explodes, it's very quick and you don't have much time to check her. You handled your situation the same way I would.

Such a perfect video. You asked us, so will tell the sad story. Took my beloved horse out when I was distracted by my neighbor showing up. This set us up right there, should have just put her back in the barn. It was extremely cold outside and ground was frozen hard. Because the neighbor showed up, forgot to check my horses feet. Another fail. We got out in the field and I knew she was going to toss me but I didn't know why. Anyhow, just as you said, I turned her head ever slightly and tried to ride her back to the block to get off. When she felt I was turning, flexing her head, she started to spin while bucking, in a circle and was quite graceful. I give her credit to this day, she used just enough force to toss/dump me on the very hard ground but was never airborne. When we got back home, saw her feet were packed with ice and was very painful to her. Still to this day it bothers me that it happened.

The whole thing doesnt make sense to me. We were out over an hour and just about home. I could see the barn... And I stood down on the ground a few minutes before getting up and he waited for me the whole time... He could have gone back to the barn. Interesting. My horse only bucks in transition to the canter, during the canter, or during the gallop..What I do feel that is similar to your horse in her back is that she gets stiff as if she is cocking a gun. I can feel the energy loading up. Then I know she wants to move fast, and that moving fast may very well include a buck, so I have to quickly decide how to deal with that.

What the Buck?!? Hahahaha - that 'calm before the storm... the slight rise in the back!!! Every. Darn. Time. It rarely happens with my 21 year old boyfriend, he is too old for that monkey business. But last spring we rounded a corner of the pasture on the outside of the fences with about 40' of grass before the woods and then a small lake beyond that. We ride there ALL THE TIME and its his own pasture, so he is VERY FAMILIAR with the surroundings. We are trotting along, no big deal, when he starts getting ants in his pants. At first I thought it was the Spring Sillies and he just needed to move, so i picked up a canter. But when the head tossing and snorting started I wondered... and then the back came up and we had ourselves a teeny tiny rodeo. Just a buck or two at a canter but no twisting, thankfully. (I am riding in a dressage saddle and this 54 year old does NOT need a rodeo) I was then thinking a burr in the girth or under his saddle pad...then I heard the crashing though the woods and smashing ice breaking and then splash, Splash, SPLASH. Yup, a black bear was swimming about 200 yards away. So I agreed that he had the right idea and I pointed him back to the barn for a good gallop. Hahahah! #bearhairdontcare #byebyesmokey

My Mare would buck out of nowhere...ended up using a running martingale. Honey didn't crow hop, she was head down, 4 feet up THEN, butt to the back of my head. I do believe she may have been a " failed" bucking horse.

Thanks for sharing this! I have a question - is it possible for a horse to buck without getting that hump in its back? I was trying out a horse recently who unbeknownst to me would buck out of the blue. We were working quietly in the school, I wasn’t asking much and from what I thought was a calm trot came an explosive buck. There was no way I could stay on and was on the floor. I am now recovering from a broken foot! I’ve never had this experience before with no warning signs and no apparent reason other than wanting to get me off!

Look for a physical issue with the equipment and/or the horse. As prey animals horses will often hide pain until they can take it no more.

Every time I ride I go through this! (kidding, it's not EVERY time) But seriously, my horses are BUDDY SOUR! Especially my appaloosa gelding. Anytime my mare is out of site, he goes nuts. Spins, humps up, and has even reared before. Unfortunately my herd is just two horses, so it's just those 2 all day every day. So it's not like I can blame him for getting upset, but I demand that he behaves when we're under saddle. What i used to do was get off and IMMEDIATELY make his ass move and hard. If he wanted to act up, I would give him something to act up about. After 2-3 rides of doing this, he learned that it was easier for him to just walk along calmly without throwing a fit trying to get back to his buddy. He still does the occasional jigging as we leave the house but he's gotten a lot better and it's not as dangerous now to where I have to get off. I can usually work it out from on his back.

@@conniekempf4050 I've had 2 children! I had stopped riding after I got pregnant with my daughter. Since my daughter was born bitten by the horse bug....lol.....she led me back to horses. I was nervous and did a lot of arguing with myself! But my love for horses and wanting to ride trumped my fear. I went back to the basics and started slow. Your body is different after kids so finding my balance was a struggle. But I love it and wouldn't trade it for the world. My daughter will be 10 next month.....so I guess I've been back in saddle for 3 years. First time up there was scary, not gonna lie. But with a good trainer who is supportive and patient.....and a patient horse....lol....it can be done. It will come back to you. Ps.....its a great way to keep your sanity! 😉

My horse is too lazy! A slow canter is about top speed. People can run and go faster. The horsefly of the rump, you will get a booty shake! She has never done the back hump at all.
