Horticulture is a career option!

Horticulture and all the jobs that come with it are completely overlooked and unappreciated as a career option. Younger people aren't exposed to the option of vocational studying or apprenticeships; meaning horticultural careers are declining. In this video I discuss what drew me to the career and why I encourage others to follow this path.

This made me so emotional. I work in an industry where people yell at me and non stop complain all day long and it's making me so depressed and miserable. Plants are definitely my therapy, and being in and with nature is my happy place. I have always wanted to work in a job where I could work with plants all day and this made me feel that it IS worth it, and there is a lot I could do working with plants. The money doesn't matter if my mental health is completey destroyed from my current job. Thank you for posting this 💚

Honestly I got into horticulture because I see a great opportunity with the legalization of cannabis. Used to work in gardens as a kid and some of my teenage years. Then switched to working in several kitchens as a line cook till now. I’m 19. Working in kitchens made me fascinated about all the local farms we would use. Then slowly got into learning how certain plants grow and the science behind it. Also being a stoner lol gave me the motivation to leave the hospitality industry to go to college this fall in horticulture and minor in business.

I really love the way you articulated yourself through the love of your experience with gardening. "You just appreciate the flower being itself and just for being there." That's really beautiful. I've always believed that gardening is a solace for the soul and I believe horticulture is essential for anybody to learn. It's the one thing we are not taught in school. It is the one of the things that can allow us to experience our inner nature and also grow compassion not just for others but for ourselves.

Hi, really like your enthusiasm. In my 40s, done many jobs over 20 + years of working, bought a house, raised a family all that good stuff. Last few years i took some time off work to get a basic education, i left school with nothing more than an Art GCSE LOL! Since getting my GCSEs and A Levels, i have secured a place to study a part time Foundation degree in Horticulture, with a view of returning to full time work at the same time, i start the course next week. I am finding it extremely difficult to secure work within horticulture that will release me on a day a week to attend college. A tree surgery company i have spoken to have urged me to apply for a job they have advertised and we can discuss the day off at interview. They are based 40 miles away from me...LOL, just cannot win at all. Other companies like garden centers local to me had offered me work a few months back, knowing i was attending college, then a few hours later they change their minds and say that they require me full time with no day release, it is so frustrating.

I just got a receptionist job (today is the start of my second week), its mostly just sitting around and news flash: I hate it. Now my ultimate goal is (was) to be a graphic designer, now I'm seriously questioning that, I love art and drawing and designing, but despite that passion I'm truely dreading spending my working life in offices. Now, would it be stupid for me to at age 20, to completely uproot my plans and just go for horticulture? it's something that really does interest me, and I think I could really enjoy it if I work hard. so uh... is it doable? am I being ridiculous? the only kind of gardening I really do is look after my Nans dingy garden and a few of my own herb plants, As well as weeding, god I love weeding and I don't know why

I’m honestly going through a similar situation. Science has always been my favorite subject so before graduating from High School I knew my career would most likely be involved with that. I’ve been stuck on Travel Nurse and Wildlife biologist (botany major). However I was quite firm on nursing first. Pretty much already started building my resume for that specific career. Then, I started dreading the idea of constantly being in a hospital and making such a commitment just to deal with unfortunate encounters, rude managers, etc. I love helping others but there’s just a lot of depth to it. I’m lost which is probably normal during young ages but I just hate not knowing or being certain. But I can say that if you TRULY know you want to get started on something, do it. The passion is there you just have to move forward and locate the drive! Don’t let time or lack of experience define you because truth be told, you’ll never know until you try and give things a go.

Hi I got offered by my Boss the option of him paying for my college expenses to study horticulture. Was hoping that you could tell me more about it. I work for a landscaping company. I've been working there for 5 years now. So honestly I never thought about making it a career. I do love flowers and plants in general. I got it from my grandmother. Is just that I'm a little scared because I dont know much about it. Or what I could do or how it would change my job so much. Please guide me so I can understand more about it and see if its fitting to the kind of person I am. Thank you.

Sounds great! If your boss is willing to pay then I'd definitely consider this a serious option as a horticultural course can be expensive. I didn't know if I wanted a career in horticulture when I began my course but the course itself made me realise that I did! The course involves lots of practical work: digging, planting, propagating, weeding etc and theory: designing borders, plant science and plant names. It's such a wide variety of topics that if you don't like one if them it doesn't impact the course very much. Let me know what you decide and good luck !

Office politics and working in an office is utter hell. I've worked in both white and blue collar jobs with a background in manual labour, plumbing, and irrigation and sprinkler systems when I was a teen to now. I'm 27 now and considering moving somewhere warmer with a focus on horticulture in the future. Feeling lost with what I wanted to do with life, all the benefits and opportunities, it feels like my life's opened up to so much different opportunities... Starting wage at certain jobs I"m chasing are decent paid too with reliable and sustainable work... Hands on for life, people who are able to do this kind of work and get this passionate about it are pretty much destined to live happy, fulfilled lives from my experience.

Is horticulture degree is same as biology or plant science degree? Can a horticulturist apply for the posts of biology and plant sciences?

They can but might have to take further small courses to focus on a specialist subject as horticulture is so vast.

I really enjoy gardening and want to learn more but the last few videos i've been watching were soooo boring almost put me to sleep. Maybe it's the videos that appear like they're from the 80s and very dull. I enjoy buying new plants and learning how to take care of them. I'm a more hands on person. Anyone else feel this way ? Or suggestions ? Cheers 🙏

I am in love with horticulture but I cannot see a future making 40 thousand dollars a year. Money, when you have a family, is important. If you can't take care of your family and live comfortably, you shouldn't do it as a career. I really wish the pay was better. There would be a lot more horticulturalists.

I agree, that there is a lack of pay in relation to other careers with a similar course/knowledge requirement but I find it to be a good salary and haven't struggled to pay for life since my business took off

What do you think is the best way for a 27-year-old to get started in this career? I would love an apprenticeship but with the salary, it is very difficult.

I have some new videos on this including how to study during lockdown :) Online courses are a good option as you can do some cheaper ones that mean you can continue with your current employment and study alongside it
