So far, she never said what the song was about, but most people believe it's about the fighting between the old fans and the new fans. Which you pretty much hit spot on!

In fact in the stream after Template's release Suisei specifically said "I will not explain the meaning, feel free to theorise" if my memory serves. There are indeed signs from the MV that the boy who dressed as her is an old fan, going by the posters in his room with the monitors having her old design. He is probably the one who dislikes the video in the beginning and iirc when we first see the room the posters are untouched, it is only in the second where they have been scribbled over (to alter the outfit design?). So very much seems to be an established fan that dislikes the new direction she is going (thought the whole gallery, mirror, dressing up/cosplay thing probably indicates that there is something more than that, but not sure what). Office lady seems to find Suisei as escapism from her boring life (mood tbh) and is enraged by the boy dressing like her (sullying her image? Actions of fans do effect how a creator is seen by others). And does seem somewhat unhealthily obsessed what with imaginary Suisei's egging her on to stab him with scissors when in fact it is cops trying to hold her back. Another theme separate from old and new fans is about how fans project an image unto her. And iirc (been a while since I looked into the lyrics) that's a major part of the lyrics/the song. "I won't fit in your image/template" (roll credits) "Only I can decide my fate/future" kind of deal. The lyrics themselves (at least in one translation) going "That's right, I don't care what's 'correct' for me/I'll decide for myself if this life is right or wrong/You can take that pretty template in your hand back home" (This independence/not letting others define her but only herself indeed is very much the central theme going by the lyrics rather than old vs new fans, despite the elements in the video supporting the latter interpretation. Anyway, multiple interpretations can be correct on different levels at any rate.)

template was composed by tatsuya kitani who also did her trail on the celestial sphere, 2 very different songs tonally but just proves how skilled he is. i have to imagine that he's happy suisei didn't quit after her trail on the celestial sphere and he got another chance to write a song for her

I love Template, both the song and the MV, it's probably my favorite Suisei song. 27:25 I have pretty much the exact opposite impression of this scene, to me it looks like the "Suisei" in the woman's mind is egging her on, the woman is doing this "for her" even if she's completely misguided. Cause the cop that is actually there is restraining her arm but the "Suisei" she's seeing instead is only touching her shoulder and appears to be whispering into her ear. My take: one fan sees himself in Suisei and assumes that means she must be just like him so he "takes her image" to express himself, other fan sees Suisei as a literal idol to be revered and is outraged in Suisei's name at how she's being depicted ("how dare you compare yourself to her"). But they're both wrong, Suisei is simply Suisei, and she'll just keep doing her own thing no matter what expectations you place on her, she won't fit in your pretty little Template.

Though these are all theory, buy there are strong indication of her old fans have an image of her, and her new fans have another. The two clashed in the mv being like, "no, suisei should be like this!", which comes back to the title of the song, template. In one stream, suisei explicity said that she doesn't want her fans to push a "template" on to her, she wants to and will do whatever the f she likes, don't determine her career for her.

Spot on with the MV commentary. This particular song came around the time when there was a bit of a controversy/backlash from some parts of the fandom, in a very toxic manner, that tried to incite a backlash against Suisei for doing what they thought "wasn't very fitting for Suisei." So many ppl speculated this song was a rejection of the "template of idol worship" the toxic fans were trying to fit Suisei into.

Great analysis and I feel like I learned quite a bit more about why this song is my favorite Suisei song probably to date. (I just like rock lol) To add a little bit, the song is composed by Kitani Tatsuya. He is a bassist, who also composed Tenkyuu, suisei wa yoru wo mataite, Sui's 2nd original song among composing for other artists. He is currently one of the hottest artists in japan after making the JJK S2 opening. He said in a live stream that Sui had clear directions for the song but he put many things that he himself liked in it (so much that he worried that it wouldn't be accepted), which is possibly why it led to such an unconventional syncopation and structure as you've said.

Pretty neat analysis! BTW my nephew is starting musical studies and i'm recommending your videos to him because you have a lot of patience and a fun method to teach the theory. Keep up doing what you like and love! From a fellow Hoshiyomi. pd. I wanted this song to be Oshi no Ko OP. Sadly it didn't happen.

28:00 my interpretation of that is `their vision/ template` of suisei in their minds is telling them to do these things for their own beliefs. but then we snap back to reality and its just the law enforcers trying to stop them. so basically they gaslighting themselves into believing this is what suisei would want. but it clearly isnt. As in the end suisei just keeps on singing and moving forward throughout the whole song, despite whatever struggles they are having with eachother.

Template is an amazing song! I love the more ambient section (1:48) and emotional part (2:03) that leads to the beat drop (2:26). It's great to see your analysis of the musical part. But it's not the only thing you could analyse. So many theories were floating around when this MV came out. One theory I remember is, the guy projecting himself as the "old Suisei" from the past. The guy _was_ a Suisei fan because he cannot identify with the current Suisei. At 21:23 he's wearing Suisei early outfit before joining Hololive (not one-by-one, but very similar) and all posters are from Suisei's early career, eg. the poster in the middle has Suisei's first Live2D outfit (that Suisei created by her own) or cover poster from Bluerose from 2021, which is overdrawn with blue paint at 22:15. The theory is the guy doesn't accept the current Suisei and wants the "old Suisei" back by mirroring the "old Suisei" on himself. Suisei also talked about Template and that MV. She doesn't have clear answers about the meaning of the MV because she wants us to create our own thoughts and theories. So there won't be a "right" or "wrong" answer about the MV's interpretation. But she gave us a hint, that the "Suisei" with no star in their eyes is not Suisei, like at 21:28. At the end Suisei is the only one who knows the true meaning of Template. It's great to see your thoughts about Template from a musical view and your MV's interpretation :D

2:29 I get a feeling that you would probbaly love Suisei's Planetarium from the Holo*27 album. You really should react to it actually, an analysis would probably be very interesting. Also, are you going to be reacting to the First Take version of Michizure after you do the Album/Original version? Also, to tell whether it is real Suisei or the boy dressed as Suisei pay attention to the stars in the eyes. 27:49 As some other comments mentioned this Suisei is not stopping the woman but is supporting her/egging her on. However, in reality it is the cop holding her back. As for what Suisei says, with a combination of her cheery uncaring smile at the end + stepping on the mirror + the lyrics it seems to me to be less "don't be creepy, be normal" and more "I don't care what you do, I will not fit your template, only I can decide who I really am". 29:30 Really excited for your Michizure reaction/review, especially considering we saw that you have favorited it on Spotify unlike Wii-Wii-Woo and Template (also my question about the First Take version stands).

Hey Ravenclaw! A few things: I appreciate how well you illustrate your analysis! I like music, I like Suisei, but I have never quite had it in me to get into the weeds with music, so your work has been illuminating. Secondly, this new space you are recording in is a massive improvement! The lighting is so much better; you look fantastic in the new portion of the video and it's better lighting letting you shine. Lastly, I wanted to make sure you had heard Kobo Kanearu's song "Help!" I'm not sure if it's worthy of a big reaction and analysis, but I think it's a lot of fun to listen to and has put her on my radar. she seems pretty talented. Thanks again!

I thought you'd long given up on analysing Specter, though I couldn't fathom why, when it's such a good album. Glad to see it's happening after all. As a bedroom metal guitarist mostly just replaying favorite songs, I'm learning more from your videos than from any regular attempts at grasping some bits and pieces of music theory. Perhaps because most courses don't teach things through the magic of suicopathic anime girls. So thank you for your work in general, and particularly on my beloved Suisei banger. It always feels so funny to say it's a pop song, when the main riff is SO DISGUSTINGLY HEAVY. Of all the heavy, doomy stuff I listen to, somehow it's this technically-jpop track by a blue 2D girl that made me buy a 7-string guitar and downtune all the way to drop A. Totally worth it. All the rhythm quirks of the song made it really tough to learn for a below-intermediate player, but it's so satisfying once you finally get the flow of it right. And the "f* it, anime song time" part releases tension quite literally -- the hard part's over, just blasting 8th note power chords now :D I think you're pretty much spot on with the MV too. Toxic fans projecting their ideas, some getting way too close, some idealizing her too much. The climactic scene with those fans coming face to face has so many potential meanings too. Taken more literally, one wants to be closer to "untouchable" Suisei so he cosplays her, while the other denies him the right to do so, deluding herself into thinking "Suisei wouldn't like this". But you could also say it's an image of a toxic fan realising there's a regular old person beneath the Suisei getup and becoming disillusioned to the point of rage -- "you must perish, the one true Suisei is the one in my head". And then the actual Suisei appears to just say "I couldn't care less about your projections even they kill you. I am me". She also seems to be playing into the Suicopath running joke here with that final splash of blue "blood" -- "I'll keep slaying in my own way". She's really the final boss. I kinda wish the CD would go straight into "My Happy Transmission" from there for extra cute creepiness.

There's a lot of room for interpretation regarding the MV, but my favorite part is the detail near the end. While the two fans were fighting each other, Suisei was shown to have "blood" in her hands, and held it to her chest. I feel that this shows how she acknowledges her responsibility in the conflict, and keeps it close to her heart. But then, she wears her blood-stained crown on her throne with a smile. It was as if saying she is taking pride in herself and the accomplishments she has built despite everything that is happening. If Stellar Stellar and Ghost are the songs that describes Suisei's struggles, I feel Template is the song gives a sneakpeek into her character.

Loved the analysis, learning about the different parts of the song that cause the stress. I ended up looking up the translated lyrics of the song during the MV portion, because I was curious about how they relate to the MV, and there is definitely a lot there about not wanting the fans to determine what is correct for her and to not put her in a box.

Love the analysis! Can't believe that you're basically spot on on the theme of the song just by the music alone without knowing the lyrics and MV! (Love that huge grin after the MV when I think you might've figured out what the song is actually about? ww) Great video as always, and I suppose stuff like these would be helped much better when you have access to the lyrics and its translations. I guess it's one of her downsides in that some of her MVs never got official translation. To me "Template" is just that - her refusal to being boxed in as just another run-of-the-mill idol/artist template. Some points that I love on the song is on (21:41) "to the Anonymous who hides your name and face (behind the screen); what do you even know about me?" - her singing quip (?) on how venomous that "Anonymous" sounds, and also at the "resolution" of the song (23:55) ending on "I have myself and don't need anything else" and of course the reff, repeating multiple times "Whether I live myself right or wrong, I judge for myself". She was asked on the meaning of the MV/song after its release and other have talked about it already - she pretty much said "you guys could figure it out yourself right?" She noted some had got it right on her stream chat but never pointed out which one. Once again love the song and your reaction & analysis, looking forward for the next ones!

Fantastic analysis on MV! Also on the musical composition, tho I can't say much since I have little background on music than literature/storytelling. As other commentors say, Suisei didn't explain much on her personal interpretation on the MV so fans pretty much have the common understanding that it's about the toxic fans that always come with stardom. Myriad of iterations they may be but sharing commonality on the fact that such fans tend to push their *'TEMPLATE'* of ideals unto their celebrities.

I have listen to the drum part for the longest time and TIL the bass drum are on 2 and 4 I always thought of it as the bass drum part were doing slow 4/4 with snare on the upbeat of 4 every 2 measures 😂 The analysis on the stress is so interesting. Also the drum part at the slow part had irregular tempo for hi-hats and the bass and snare rhythm are dragged longer with 2 different set of rhythm. So many cool parts about the song.

Yeah Template has an interesting MV, and I've thought about it a few times to try and figure it out. I think you're pretty much in the right area, being about different types of toxic fans. Obsession or, as you put it 'white knighting', and whatever else might be going on. A very interesting contrast for me is one of Towa's songs, Reimei, which IIRC came out around the same time. It seems to be more about needing the support of fans (who aren't toxic, hopefully, lol). On that note I'd be curious to see you analyze some of Towa's songs sometime.

I think the male fan was made to represent fans who think they can control Suiseis narrative, and that they have the right to decide how she should be portrayed or act. As if they puppeteer her actions because they are supporting her, after all. The female fan I think is made to represent the fans that are idol sycophants. They fell for the image and they see any change or comment on Suisei not being a stellar idol as blasphemy and will get almost violent in their reaction to such things.

would it be fair to say that compared to the intro and the first verse, the chorus is actually in quarter time instead of half time? it slows down by a LOT and it's the bridge that sounds like it's in half time to me. cool ass song, too bad it's so short.
