I feel like y'all have kinda done FWMC and Koyori's group a disservice here. You are used to listening to vtuber tracks where they have backing vocals that are just added vocals from the singer her or himself at a higher or lower pitch. The thing about FWMC is that they trust each other enough to do their own harmonies. All the harmonies you heard in here were done by FWMC singing at the same time. And I'm sure any singer knows that singing harmony is the hardest thing to do competently live. I'm going to link their 3D live version of a song here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sNeZiJlk2tenaYk.html . They did this 100% live. And in the Koyori vid, while the group is good, your bias is really showing. The Koyori vid has 6 really strong singers. As a critical listener, there're no parts where the song is "weaker" for a lack of Suisei. You say "Subaru tries really hard" but she's better than plenty of musicians or singers out there. My point with all of this is that sometimes you need to take a step back and realize that you aren't watching the video critically anymore but rather doing it as a Suisei stan. For instance, I would have called out the fact that they capitalized on the talent they had in Suisei to provide her a space to sing after the 2nd chorus but slotted in Subaru right after, meaning they didn't think that was an awkward segue. They clearly had faith it works and it does. You said "who's decision was that? And that "Subaru took one for the team" and then made a joke about "had she done it in a duck voice...". Who the heck are you to make that determination? That's not the kind of analysis I expect from someone touting classical training. It comes off as elitist and that you are putting down the talents. That's not why we are here. You didn't even mention Sora's high note in the backing track. Or any of the other little cool things sprinkled throughout; cause you took off your critical hat. As a classically trained musician myself, I don't think it's right to look at the individual as somehow stronger than the whole it is a part of. We don't get angry at a fellow Tenor for not having the range we do, we adapt and adjust. You are looking down at the other talents in the song because they don't have Suisei's voice. That's a bad take.

2:41 Voice acting is an incredibly competitive market in Japan, so any extra skills any voice actor or actress has is very appreciated, singing specially is one that can help a lot since they can A) Make songs while in character such as the ones here B) Eventually release their own songs and maybe spin a career in music out of it, for example, Yui's voice actress, Toyosaki Aki, has released 3 albums under her own name while Mio's voice actress has released 2

2:00 While female directors aren't necessarily common OR uncommon, it's not specially surprising from K-on! who have one of the highest rates of female employees of any Anime studio, with women actually having a majority in their workforce. ALso as I'm sure you know by now cuz this video is 3 years old, Naoko Yamada is a very renowned and accomplished director and animator who started working in the industry with KyoAni's adaptation of Key's Visual Novel, AIR, in 2005

contrary to what I would like to believe that the next instrument master of hololive will be another blue-haired isekai hero.. it's actually green... now we have pianist, guitarist, cellist, and a violinist, and most of them are great vocalists too.

Additional notes because quick glance through comments there might be some context missing. star animal is a group formed when hololive held a gaming event during the golden week of japan (basically the whole week is holiday which starts around first week of May), there are six person in a group, two games, three person per type of game. The name star animal comes from their names, sora's sky, subaru's sky and pleiades, suisei's star and comet, koyori's coyote, chloe's orca, polka's fennec fox. The joke about the animals and star may be switched is also during the gaming event, suisei lost by failing a full combo in taiko no tatsujin and while frustrated played into her "wilder" side, sora also lost (didnt look too much into her so i dont know the reason) and when suisei is screaming/yelling decided to scream a little bit but because subaru already mute suisei due to her screaming, sora got muted too.

Lol, the comment about chloe's voice in the group cover at the start. Yeah, she's really damn good at that sweet and sultry delivery. I remember being absolutely shocked the first time I heard her sing. It's so unexpected given her super cute and high pitch speaking voice.

Flare's cover from 3 years back gives a well deserved punch to the song in her singing, it feels like a lot more raw emotion. She doesn't sing much in that cool deeper voice anymore since actively moving toward a cuter image, but her covers back then were amazing.

Roboco fits the bill for the seductive sultry voice in hololive. Azamina is a great showcase for a raspy quality in her voice. Suspect by roboco, ayame and akirose is another great showcase. You should also check out the ifuudoudou cover by sora, azki, suisei, irys and mori. Its interesting to say the least 😅

Fuwawa is definitely the evil twin. The reason for those 6 singing a song together is that they were a team for a tournament they participated in together. The team was called Staranimal. Sora's name meaning "sky", Subaru being "Pleiades", Suisei being "comet" and the other girls are all animals.

Subaru definitely took one for the group after going after the blue queen XD In all seriousness, the twins did a cool job and the group of six did a neat combination. Trying to sing this song with one singer compared to the original is a very tricky task. Chloe's singing range is very impressive with her song PET, and Sora is really neat to hear her singing. She's well known for going to higher note ranges with upbeat cute dances or literal opera type singing. Polka is...Polka, and the same can be said for Suisei. She is the queen =) Thank you for taking time to react to Advent's songs!

I really like Fuwamoco‘s version of Kaibutsu. Aside of those two version there are many Hololive member who covered this song, eg. Flare and Watame. The (unofficial) group name of Koyori‘s version is „StarAnimal“. We have two „Stars“ in Sora and Suisei, and the rest are animals (and yes, Subaru is a duck xD). They also did a stream together after the release, and Subaru told she felt a little bit out of place. But she really did her best and everyone encouraged her! It‘s a sweet clip :D

Subaru does have star motifs so she could also count for that as well. Also also, iirc there was a joke in the stream that who the stars and animals were reversed (I think Sora and Suisei had done some weird loud noises).

I was curious what you would think of the "You can't forgive yourself" thing. I'm still not sure how I feel about it myself, but taken in context with the rest of the show and its messages it makes sense. Still, it comes across as kind of cruel, and I think telling that to someone in Reki's situation would make things worse. I really like the concept of the bell nuts, and the Passing of the Year traditions in general. Sadly we don't get to know the exact meanings of all the colors. I'll be looking forward to the final video, but I'm also sad it's coming to an end! This has been a great way to revisit one of my favorite series!

So glad to see you almost at the end of this show! I'm trying to catch up on Oshi no Ko, still in season 1 on that. A few comments, as always. 6:46 The old kid's rhyme needs to be changed: "Sticks & stones... But words will devastate me." I can think of a few that still nag at me today, at 64 years. 7:48 The concern for other Haibane does seem to keep "elders" around, as Nemu keeps hanging around because of her concern for Reki. At 17:10 in the review: "Nemu wishes to see that you take the flight first". I think being guardians is a part of the Haibane "rules", one they are unaware of, and only affects some of them. 14:00 I think she was referring to the fever medicine, not the wing dye. 20:38 "Punishment" (Ha!). Absolutely a part of the Renmei goals, to help these kids onward. That job is an honor, but with incredible responsibility, which anyone other than Rakka might find burdensome. 25:15 The factory kids did say they couldn't "take care of the young ones". Perhaps it is the environment - imagine a kid falling from the very open architecture. They'd have to watch the little ones constantly -------------------- 28:24 The look on Rakka's face when Reki says "I'm alright". She wants to believe her but deep down "no, you're not". 32:28 The impact of that scene, Hyohko really did almost die, and in his case he intentionally violated the wall. BTW, there's an old joke that the anime body contains at least 10 gallons of blood. I find Hyohko's desire to hide what he is interesting; he's always hiding his halo and wings even while not in town. None of the other Haibane do that. It feels almost like he's ashamed. Maybe because of this experience with the wall? 35:57 The letters on that tag, Rakka got the Rosetta Stone effect from it - three letters, spelling "K-U-U". And once you associate the strokes with finger positions, the symbols everywhere, "man, it was right there in front of us!" On "can't forgive yourself"; receiving forgiveness from someone you hurt completes the process of forgiving yourself. Rakka recognized the bird as someone she had hurt by her actions, and forgiveness was given for those actions, providing a full circle (and allowing her to leave the circle of sin). Any doubt of the supernatural nature of the walls is gone when they start glowing. I think it also speaks of the protective nature, specifically towards the Haibane. The scene is very comforting, isn't it? The reconciliation between Reki and Midori is just wonderful. I think Midori was crying over all the time wasted staying angry and apart from her friend. Looking forward to episode 13! I'm not sure if you have seen the doujinshi Abe-sensei did way back when, I posted a 4-koma joke from those in the #haibane-renmei channel on discord. Now that episode 12 is past, there is a conversation between Reki and Nemu that I'll post, it fleshes out the Kuramori narrative a bit.

I swear I saw a clip of Nerissa talking about how translating lyrics for a song is different from just translating to get an idea across. If I recall correctly she explicitly mentioned that there are so many poorly translated lyrics out there that get the ideas across but don't sound good when sung. So that's something she explicitly thinks about when translating lyrics. It's nice that you recovered that. That's also why I generally ignore any cover that has "(English translation)" or such in the title. Also, if you havent heard it, you absolutely should check out Ado's cover of this song (aishite, aishite, aishite). She goes all over the place with her voice.
