My hospital puts an alarm tag on all the babies immediately after birth. The tag has an ID number and the parents are given bracelets with the same number. If someone removes the tag from the baby without it being deactivated, the system alarms and all the doors on the ward lock. Maybe it's overkill, but it definitely gives me some peace as a hormonal, new mother. Having your baby switched or stolen would be devastating.

In a UK hospital, they brought me the wrong baby and then asked me if I was sure! When I replied, ‘Yes I am sure, my baby was born with a cleft lip and palate and this baby has no cleft lip and palate and has a Jewish surname’, they quickly wheeled the baby away and I heard them laughing at the nurse’s station. At this point in time, I had been separated from her for five hours (she was in NICU and I was unable to walk) and it tipped me over the edge. I burst into tears and, finally, at midnight a new doctor came and asked me why I was crying and I told her ‘I just want to see my baby!’ After explaining what happened and what I had been through, the doctor stormed down to the nurse’s station and demanded that someone get me in a wheelchair and wheel me straight in to see the baby! Awful awful behaviour from these professionals. 😢

Imagine if the baby was a little girl as well. You may not figure it out until much, much later, if ever.

That happened to my grandmother, my uncle got swapped at the hospital, a nurse gave the wrong baby to my grandmother, thankfully she knew right away it was not her son. She noticed the baby didn’t have the birthmark on his leg like my uncle, nobody believed her, saying it’s her baby. So my grandmother screamed at the nurse, nearly beating her up, demanding where her baby was, they finally realized their mistake & give my uncle back, who was about to be discharged with another family. That story traumatized my mom, that’s why at my birth, she screamed at my dad to follow me everywhere & not leaving me alone with the nurses. 😅 same with my little brothers, it became a usual thing to never leave the baby alone at the hospital.

I don't care if people think I am crazy. I will bring a pen and mark my baby 😂

That means isabella wasn't getting the medicine she needed for the whole day and that could have been dangerous as well! Not ok! What a nightmare 😡

I would demand a private/independent DNA test after that. On the hospitals dime. If they refuse hire a lawyer. I'd seriously consider changing hospitals as well. Totally incompetent. 😮

This is the rest guys, There was a nursery her baby stayed at under a special lamp where nurses checked on her baby every 2 hours she was called into this office and apparently the baby was fine and said the baby kept on crying that's why they had the baby even though she was a bit suspicious because her baby girl never cried since she was so unwell at the time, she found out the baby was a boy so she went down an said to the nurses/widwifes and asked them where the baby there face went pale and told her they assumed that baby boy was hers since they looked so similar. She got he baby back an was in shock. The staff never mentioned it for the rest of the time period they stayed there but she said she didn't know who the boys mother was an it remained a mystery.

I kept my baby with me almost the entire time. He had to go to the nursery because of a bilirubin treatment and I followed as far as I could, but could only see through the window. I saw him through the glass kicking and flailing when the little glasses they wear during treatment had slipped over his nose and mouth! I began beating on the thick window to get the attention of the only nurse in there who was several feet away tending another baby. He remained with me after that. I had lost my almost full term…38 week, over 7 pounds 21”…baby girl the year before (negligent doctor) and almost lost my baby boy too because he became stuck in the birth canal. He was blue and had to be resuscitated. You don’t get as much rest…but peace of mind and go home with your own baby.

Yes! I had my daughter and she was 8lbs 3 1/2 oz. They brought in this 6lb baby 😮 i was like WTF WHO IS THIS? They checked bracelets and realized thier mistake. 34yrs ago. 🕊️ Miss you my angel. Wish you were still here with me. #suicideawareness

Exactly why my daughter had me there with them for the 24 hours post delivery in the hospital. She had to be medicated due to a high blood pressure problem - they wanted to take my G’daughter to the nursery. Nope. That’s not happening. I held that baby in my arms for 8 hours. They wanted to take her to another room to bathe her. OK - I’ll go with her. There was zero possibility we were letting her out of our sight.

I had my baby girl at Balboa Naval hospital in San Diego and they place electric alarm bands on mom baby and dad that identify that the family are all together and if any are tampered with or removed an alarm will sound and the nurses all come running which I found out by mistake lol but that gave me amazing peace of mind! I can’t imagine the emotional distress of loving on the wrong baby as those first few days are super crucial for bonding and cementing emotional ties to one another…poor mama!

Same happened to me. About to see my son for the first time since surgery & the moment they brought him to me, I knew it wasn't my baby. They thought I was crazy & wouldn't listen to me. I took the baby & went room to room looking for mine. Found him 5 rooms down with a lady who was trying to force him to take her milk. She called nurses who called security and eventually police because I refused to give back my son to the other lady who was refusing to take her own. After 3 more hours they figured out the mistake & admitted I was right. They couldn't figure out how I knew when I only saw my son for 2 seconds before they took him away to finish my surgery. Besides just remembering his beautiful face, my baby was 10lbs 11ozs at birth & the baby they brought me was a little bitty baby, lol. RIP my sweet Michael. 6-11-91 to 5-02-14 ❣️💔❣️

Hospitals here in Nigeria makes sure a family member is closely monitoring the nursing staff as they take care of the baby so there would be no mix ups.

Nurses swapping babies does happen in many places My dad when I was born was following nurses everywhere to keep an eye on me and make sure I won't be swapped with any other baby that was there at the time I'm pretty sure I am their daughter so great job dad❤😂

See all these stories shock me because I've given birth 4 times -- 3 in canada and 1 in poland -- and I have NEVER been separated from my child. If ever there was a problem and they needed to go to a different room, I or my husband would accompany the baby. Why do mothers and babies get separated after birth in some countries?

I understand this isn't practical for everyone, but I refuse to let any hospital take my child to the nursery. I don't understand why more parents don't insist on baby in the room with them.

36 years ago I had a C-section with my first. I did not get to see her as I passed out right afterwards. I woke up early early and they allowed me to see her real quick as they were running test. The next morning the nurse came in looked at my band and babys band and handed her to me. I said this is not my baby... She said what??? I said my baby is bald .. that baby had a head full of black hair. She looked at our bands again.. mine was Hurt the babys was Hunt... 🤦🏼‍♀️ Luckily I had seen her already or I would have thought she was mine.

Known i was having a boy, in the delivery room there was 9 staff on stand by. I can't remember why. They took my baby did some quick work on a portable baby table. Eventually the nurse brought me my baby all wrapped up with a bow on his head. I freaked out internaly when the nurse said. "Here's your beautiful girl, congradulations." Brain goes to a screaching holt. "But, i had a boy, are you sure its a girl?!?" The nurse checked and sure enough i was holding a boy. As quick as it was over its one of the most panicked moments in my life.

I went through the same thing 46 years ago. The nurses aid brought in a baby. When I went to change the diaper the baby was a little girl. MY baby was a little boy. The woman then went and got my baby. Along with a case of water, diapers and formula. I guess she thought I was going to report her. I didn’t report her. I was just glad to have my son.

My first baby was born in hospital and I was told I needed an epidural. That night after birth, the nurses left me alone with my baby 10 feet from me. When she kept crying the nurse came in asked annoyed why I wasn’t feeding her as instructed. I told them I was paralyzed waist down and I couldn’t reach her. My next 2 we’re home births as I refused to go back to the hospital. Unfortunately my 4th was premature and the midwife had to yell at all the nurses and doctors to let us be coz there almost twenty nurses and doctors going in and out of the birthing room and the baby and I were in distress by this point. As soon as he came out, I made sure to lock eyes with him in case they end up giving me the wrong baby. Good thing I did. They took him to NICU without even letting me hold him first. Do not like hospitals at all.

That infuriates me. This among other reasons is why, for my only hospital birth, my baby was not allowed to lane my room. Nope. All their equipment has wheels. Need to do a routine test? Not without my eyes.

Not too many things are as important as keeping our children safe🕊️

My friend was swapped in the hospital and her mom found out because she had a distinctive bump behind her ear and it was not there. They did get reunited

My mom made my dad watch me at all times when I was born. She was so worried I could be switched with another baby.

The hospital I delivered at put a hospital bracelet on her wrist to match mine and an alarm on her ankle, it resembled a white version of an ankle monitor for probation. This was done right after they laid her on my chest, as in they were tagging her while she cried on my chest. In addition to that my boyfriend, her dad, stayed with her the entire time she wasn't right by me or in one of our arms. The only time she left our room was for her newborn hearing test and blood work (done in the same visit). When she came back they checked our bracelets, the hospital had a scanner and scanned our bracelets. My bf also took pictures of her while she was on my chest, specifically her face. We were not taking chances. We both have heard of hospital mixups and of women pretending to be nurses and snatching newborns from the maternity ward. To get in and out of the ward you had to be buzzed in, but you couldn't just press a button and be let in. They asked who you were & if you were visiting or in labor. They also were not messing around about safety. I'm grateful for that. ❤

That happened to the person whom was in the hospital room where I was .. she has just had her baby and was back in the room waiting for them being her daughter to her.. they brought the baby in and placed it in the mothers arms and the whole time she kept saying to me that just didn’t look like her baby.. she held it for a long while and then someone came in and told her that was the wrong baby! She lost her shit and said who’s been feeding my baby then? They told her her baby was in the nursery the whole time! Not sure if that is true but either way she did get her baby back .. can’t imagine!

Yea my hospital had alarm tags for the parents and babes!! But my son’s dad was watching him like a hawk.. from the first little bath at the hospital to the diaper change to the meds they had to give him.. neither him or me left our sons side cause I was so scared of someone taking my baby!!

In the hospital they gave my grandma a different baby boy but she recognised it immediately because my uncle was born with 11 fingers. But tbh this switch would have been his chance to grow up without my toxic grandma, maybe he would've been a lot better this way. But then another boy would have been in his position and that's not fair either...

I still remember being an absolute panic. When my son had to say a whole month in Nikki because he was a month and a 1/2 early. My biggest fear was this happening just because I was out of it and honestly, I would not have been able to tell because just everything went wrong. I didn't get the hold of him. They just swept him off to Nick. You mind you? He was stable. He was not having breathing issues. He didn't need oxygen. He was just a little bit early. They wouldn't let me hold him when I went down to see him. And I had to actually walk myself down the nickel a day later because they refused to take me. Mind you ahead, lost 4 leaders of blood had to have an emergency section was weak everywhere and honestly am just starting the recovery from that 2 years later. I ended up getting lost and ended up in e. R. Which ended up being good thing? Because I pulled my stitches and I was bleeding. But when I was finally able to go see him. I made sure that I checked him for any. Kind of Birthmark that I could recognize as his which he seemed to have gotten mine thankfully, which is right above his ear. Though I didn't notice 1 day that it disappeared while we were in the queue and I called them out on it. I basically had good dna test to prove that the kid that was saying is, my kid was mine. And the one that they had handed me wasn't. This is what we are still in nicu during covid The kid I had turned out to be another ladies who was positive with COVID and my son ended up catching it. Yeah, I was convinced not to Sue but I still wished I had because what the f*** Like I could understand this happening like 2030 years ago, but not nowadays.

If the baby was withdrawing from illegal drugs, the mom should be fixed and should serve prison time. Not ok to harm a baby! 🤬

I'd seen too many switched at birth movies throughout the 80's and 90's and I wasn't taking any chances with my baby. I gave birth to my only child 26 years ago and the hospital gave me the opportunity to have my daughter whenever I wanted. So I only allowed her to leave the room for baths and whatever else was absolutely necessary. As it turns out my daughter looked too much like me and my father to ever be confused with another child. Now I'm a grandma of 4 and my grandson looks a little like us but my granddaughters are like tiny clones lol.

That's why I was with my children at ALL times. I stayed in the hospital for 4 days

This happens all the time! Mother's be careful! I was also switched at birth. Thank goodness my father realized that I was not the baby they gave my parents. He told them that I was not the baby. Then they found me and brought me back to my parents.

So crazy anyone leaves their baby’s side at all: even NICU. My daughter was in the NICU and was never ever without one of us . I can’t imagine leaving a baby alone. I was legit the only mom in the NICU. The babies just screamed alone

Once upon a time hospitals put name bands on babies the instant they were born.

This happened to me. If he had been a girl i would have went home with me. Funny storey we became really close with that family and grew up together!😂❤

If you have to be separated from your baby at any moment, make sure you have pre-planned for either your partner or a close family member/friend to go with the baby. Hospitals are hectic places and unfortunately even with the best of care things can go wrong.

This is terrible and I hope the hospital got her daughter back to her and returned the baby this poor lady had been with to his rightful parents. Wrist band on mom and matching ankle bracelet on baby I think could have prevented this from happening if such a system wasn’t in place. I’d be livid too.

The babies looks really change so much in just a few hours too. They take many many precautions in American hospitals now so that this doesnt happen. They put wrist bands on you and then the baby almost before anything else.

This happened to my mom in the late 80's...she had a shared recovery room and the other lady had a boy with brown hair and brown eyes. My older sister was born with blonde hair and blue eyes...the nurses gaslit my mom when she told them that the baby next to her bed wasnt her baby...they pointed out the anklet on the baby's ankle (that was velcroed together meaning it could be easily removed and put back on) that had my mom's name. She went to change the baby's diaper and discovered she was changing a baby boy. Turns out the night nurses took both babies to the nursery the night before and for some reason their anklets were taken off during a changing and then put back on wrong. They apologized profusely but my mom was rightfully furious, as the other mom and baby got discharged a few hours after they made the discovery and the terror that her baby could have been discharged as the other woman's instead of hers and left to God knows where was insanely high. Even though the security measures are much higher nowadays here in the US, she still is weary when her kids have kids and the nurses offer to (ore require) take the baby to the nursery for a bit. The anxiety in her eyes is obvious.

This is one of the reasons why either I or his dad stayed with our new boy 100% of the time in the hospital.

My mom had me and my sister stay with her in the room when she had us. She did NOT want us in the nursery for this exact reason. Mix ups or getting stolen. I’m very glad she did because I wouldn’t want any other mom in the world, especially if it wasn’t my real mom. This case also reminds me of the movie “Run.” pretty sure its on Hulu and its a greaf movie and I totally recommend it for anyone who likes thrillers!

I saw my baby immediately after birth. There’s no way that I wouldn’t have noticed that I had the wrong baby. How did she miss it???

So when I was born the hospital put my mom in a room in the basement, and proceeded to neglect her for the rest of her stay. My sister was then born in a different hospital and my mom told them no drugs, they gave her drugs anyway and after she had her they switched the baby on her as well. It wasn't until the nurse saw my mom going to breast feed that they realized it was the wrong baby. After that my dad delivered all of my other 3 sisters at home.

YIKES! How HORRIBLE! An alarm tag was put on my baby soon after giving birth & there is no nursery at the hospital, (only NICU). Babies stay in the private hospital room with their Mommy. Whenever staff needed to take my daughter away they told me why & for how long. I'm very greatful for the way the hospital maternity ward operated. ❤

I was always afraid of my baby being swapped, which is why I only okayed her leaving for a bath and nothing else. Was still nervous, but she was born with a distinct birthmark on her back that is similar to the one I have on my thigh. So the nurses felt very confident that they couldn’t swap my baby with another.

They're supposed to check your tag, and your baby's tag to ensure they match. Also, if there's any way possible, don't let them take your baby away. They took my oldest away for about five hours, and wheb I asked for him back they said he was having trouble regulating his temperature. I had had a rough night in labor, and for one of the few times in my life, I felt too weak to say no.

Same thing happened to me with baby next room over ( who coincidentally was my hair dresser babies born same day ) swapped with mine . Mine was girl and this was boy they brought for me to nurse .. though they looked the same I knew it was not my baby based only on the weight as I held in my arms I knew my baby felt heavier .. I said something immediately and the nurse argued with me saying was impossible to happen their system blah blah blah . She looked at the bracelet then immediately apologized. I figure only bc I knew and bcz boy vs girl … but really you can’t trust the “ system.” I wish I never had her vaccinated.. as a baby .. I’m positive it cause Asperger’s in her later in life became apparent..

At our hospital the mom is given a special band when she is admitted and then the baby gets one before they even leave the birthing room. It’s put on the umbilical cord. And if anyone gets a baby within a certain amount of feet from any door that could be an exit, to either outside or other parts of the hospital, then an alarm goes off and all of the doors lock immediately. Every hospital should have a similar system set up. Using systems like this makes switched at birth babies a super rare thing.
