In this video, I install the brake master cylinder in the speedster by modifying the original Ford pedal and fabricating a custom mounting bracket and linkage. This is some footage from over the winter that I finally got around to editing.

Congratulations on your graduation and new job. I would haul the Roadster and parts to Texas so you have the option to keep working on it and enjoy the more favorable weather cruising with the top off all year round and maybe even keep your You Tube family entertained as well. Either way I hope you succeed in anything you desire.

Just protect it, you could definitely build something strong enough to hold up that entire car if you had to, it'll be fine. Good to see you again.

Solid no. This brake job was a textbook example of speed blindness. When the skill set and experience grows, designs become more risky. Then eventually something like this happens. Deadly brakes. Even if you shield that setup with frame rail gauge steel, it still has that faulty linkage design. As you said, never trust only welds, always have mechanical bond too. Every bit of that brake pedal linkage is relying solely on welds, and the geometry of the linkage is loading those welds hard.

Hi. I agree with you that the brake linkage WILL work, but I definitely would NOT have positioned it there. All you need is to go over something with little ground clearance and your brakes could be applied for you! Great build though and some very impressive work. Regards Mark in the UK

Good to see you back and a nice little project on the brake cylinder. I would definitely put a shield on that linkage because if you do ground it on a speed hump or something it will jam your brakes on. I think incorporating something to keep the road dirt away from the master cylinder would be good also.

Those tabs on the bracket are a great idea. I never feel fully comfortable relying on welds alone. At least not my own! Modifying a factory brake pedal like that isn't allowed at all in New Zealand. No cutting, heating, bending,, welding, drilling, etc allowed. What you can do is make you own from mild steel as long as the main actuating part of the pedal is all one piece. So you couldn't even weld a bracket on as you did even if it was all mild steel. I had to remake the brake pedal in my car for this reason. Clutch and throttle they don't car and you can do what you like!

Nice to see a video from you! For your brake reservoirs, why not pick up four stainless freeze plugs and a piece of sheet to make a couple of matching barrels? It would be a little bit of a pain in the ass, but it might look cool if you rolled a few beads and used the same proportions as a 55 gallon oil drum. And I know you have sort of a monochromatic theme, but it's such a small detail and so tucked away, I think if you made the skeleton for the reservoirs out of brass, it would be a very very sharp look. I love that, when the nicest details are very easily missed. Like maybe you have noticed an unusually heavy door knob, how much more satisfying it is in the hand?

I don't think you explained why you can't have the MC in the traditional spot on the other side of the firewall. Or maybe that was in a previous vid? Is it just because you wanted the linkage at the pivot point?

Make sure there is no side loading on that master cylinder. I have the same from wilwood with 1 inch bore. My 1st pedal attempt had a touch too much side loading and over 3 months it wore out one side of the bore. Has a small leak even after replacing the seal kit and replacing my pedal for a wilwood pedal and mount. Anyways still holds a pedaal and the leak is minor. What pedal radio do you have now. I didnt hear you mention it. Wilwood recomends 7:1 for manual brakes.
@justanotherguy9664
@justanotherguy9664 2 жыл бұрын
my thoughts as well. That master bore and pedal lower aren't in the same plane, so there will be side load. Add in the low-hanging issue, and it is time to re-design the brake setup.

It's nice to see a new video. I was beginning to wonder what had happened to you. The brakes are clearly hydraulic, which is practical, albeit somewhat anachronistic. What's going to be at the wheels? Drums salvaged from some '50s sedan? (Finned would look cool.)
